WWU - PT, Gym, and Running. Yes, Running!

PT update:  I'm getting good at some of this stuff.  Not trying to brag, but honestly, when I first started back in June I never thought I could make my body do what Amanda wanted.  It's a good lesson for me:  you can do hard things.

Yesterday we reviewed my standing exercises, and then she gave me a new one called the Cat Stance Two Step.  I actually got it well enough that we moved on to the next part, which was a little more confusing - not hard, just a brain processing thing - so I asked Amanda to video me while talking me through it.  Eventually I did it right, but at first I went the wrong direction:
"Bend your knee and twist toward the straight leg.  No, the other leg.  The straight one."

Hey, at least I can laugh at my mistakes, which is a good thing since I make a lot.

Workout update:  Due to Jared's traveling, I had a make up session on Monday.  I did some arm work using 5 pound dumbbells for my shoulders and 12 pound dumbbells for my arms when my back was in a more supported position.  I don't have an ego when it comes to how much weight I can press or whatever, but I thought it was funny to see the difference.  And, my shoulder muscles were sore the next day, so I'm glad I only used the 5 pound dumbbells.

I like that Jared always asks what I've been working on in PT and what is hard for me, and then he'll come up with something to do that utilizes a similar stance or effort.  For example, I'm working on the rocking pigeon, which has me go from sitting on a chair to standing up on one leg, with the other leg crossed over the standing leg's knee.  Oh and I have to be in zero spine while I do it.  Well, Jared had me do a one legged thing from a standing position, focusing on driving my foot down to force my body upward.  Get this - the next day at PT I did the best rocking pigeon's I've ever done.  I am so pleased to be getting all of these body mechanic lessons from two people because between the both of them, my brain has a better chance of making the connection and doing the PT exercise correctly.

Running update:  What, running??!!  Well no, not me.  But our running club had a longstanding dream come true on Saturday.  For years, after so many hot summer runs where everyone would be laying on the ground, wiped out from the heat and humidity, we'd all talk about jumping in a pool at the end of a run - just take off your shoes and jump in, ahhhhh.

Well, we now have a summer clubhouse, in the form of Cindy's community pool, so a party was planned.   I mapped a route to the pool and on Saturday morning, our runners were off on an adventure to a new place!  Jimmy and I first went to McDonald's for coffee and then to Starbucks for a traveler of coffee.  You can never have too much coffee:
 It was a coffee bonanza!

Cary went to get breakfast tacos, and we all made it to the pool shortly before the first runners arrived:
Some people chose to eat first, but they did not wait an hour to swim, haha.
Pregnant mama needs her breakfast!  I was very talented at catching a lot of the Renegades with a mouthful of food but I won't post those pictures because I want to live.
The Renegade Run Club's dream come true!
A sunrise swim with good friends and coffee - what more could I want?
Mason and Logan had a blast!
Eventually we left, packing people into cars to get back to the clubhouse.  Even the ride back was fun!

Some of us weren't quite ready for the fun to end, so we went for second breakfast:
Yes, at Blue Baker - where else would we go?

Our pool party was so much fun.  I hope everyone is on board to do it again soon now that we have the perfect summer clubhouse!

  1. Man, talk about clickbait! LOL!

Seriously, looks like such a blast. And I'm glad you're crushing those PT exercises. Those rocking pigeons are no joke.

    1. Haha yes - but can you blame me? I haven't been able to write about running since early April. :(

  2. The Cat Stance Two Step sounds like some new dance move. And YES, you (yes, you!) can do hard things!

Your pool party looks like so much fun! My neighborhood has a community pool too, and I always want to jump in at the end of my hot summer runs but it's not open until 9am (no idea if anyone enforces that, but I'm a rule follower). The Renegades are living every runner's hot weather dream :)

    1. Haha you are right about the dance move. It must be some country dance step for real...

We wondered about the time, but there are no hours posted, and the gate was unlocked, so 7:00 am pool party it was! :)

  3. Good job on all your PT exercises! Your pool party looks so fun! I can remember back in college my roommate and I used to go for a 45 min power walk every evening. During the summer we would wear our swimsuits under our clothes and walk straight to the pool in our apartment complex when our walk was done. We would be stripping off clothes and shoes as we got near the pool and then we would run and dive in - it was the best!! Oh to be young and carefree and able to wear a tiny swimsuit again! :)

    1. Jill I love that you and your roommate did that - I can just picture the giddiness of running to the pool and jumping in! Ahh, youth. :)

  4. That sounds like a perfect end to a run. We have several organized runs around here where they run to the ocean and jump in. Why have I never done one you ask? Because most of them are in November, December, January. No thanks.

I know everything still feels hard for you, but I can totally see progress. Also, I'm pretty sure I cannot do that pigeon thing and I don't have a disc issue!

    1. Uh, no thank you to jumping into the ocean in Nov/Dec/Jan. Unless it's in Maui. ;)

Running… You had me for a second!

  6. I think it's great that you're re-learning that you can do the hard things. I have been reading your blog for a longish while, and you have done so many hard things - losing the weight, starting to exercise, biking, running, those horrid box jumps, circuit training. It doesn't surprise me that you've found a new hard thing to conquer! WTG, Shelley! And did we already know there's a new Renegade Baby on the way? I must have missed that post - congrats!

    1. Thanks for the reminders - over the years I tend to forget what all I've done. Hey, you know the one good thing about having a herniated disc? I am not allowed to do box jumps ever again. EVER. :) :) :)

Actually we have two Renegade babies coming - both boys are going to be big brothers! Another round of boys, too. I wrote about it here if you want to catch up: https://www.myjourneytofit.com/2019/07/fmm-renegade-babies-no-more.html

    2. Thanks for the link, Shelley - I read that one, but somehow skimmed over the whole big brother thing. How fun is that? Of course, if a baby girl ever happens along - watch out! It'll be non-stop knitting, right? LOL

And lucky you to have doctor's orders to skip the box jumps. I did 30 this morning and, while proud of myself, was MUCH happier when they were DONE!

  7. Sounds like your PT is really progressing along! I remember how scared you were to do box jumps. I still am LOL! I won't either with my disc. On Jan 1 each year there is a polar jump into Lake George. No thank you!I think the water temps are in the 40s or a little lower. That's right around the time the lake starts to freeze over for the winter.

    1. Yeah thanks but no thanks to a polar jump - I'm up for a little adventure but that is too much for me!

  8. OMG that is a dream come true with the pool! Ahhhh. I have a friend who lives close and sometimes I run to her house and jump in her pool then she drives me home. Ha.

You are kicking butt at PT and with your workouts!!!!
