WWU - How Cold is Too Cold?

As you might guess, exercise has been sporadic for me with all of the traveling.  I was proud of myself for getting up on Sunday morning to meet our running group at 6:00 am for a run, which considering we didn't get home until 10:30 the night before after flying all day was a bit of a miracle.  The run itself wasn't anything to write home about but my legs were moving and that was enough at that point.  Plus Diane and I got to catch up on life which is always good.

Backtrack to Monday - it got cold here.  There was a strong north wind howling all day - seriously, it was howling!  The temperature kept dropping and it was predicted to be around 32 degrees with a feels like temp of 24 degrees at our normal running time on Tuesday, so Diane and I decided to not run.  Turns out Jeff and his crew didn't run either - if it was just cold, we all probably would have run, but that wind was making for a bitterly cold morning.  It was too cold - yes I answered my question.

I was awake yesterday morning, checking the weather app from the comfort of my bed, when I saw that snow was in the immediate forecast.  Of course I had to jump out of bed, throw on some clothes, and go wait for the snow.  Sure enough, it came!  Now don't laugh - this is very unusual for us in November, much less at all, even though lately it does seem like we get some snow each year.  Here's a picture of the accumulation:
Quite the combination - fallen leaves from autumn with snow from winter.

It melted pretty quickly, but the wind kept blowing and it was just plain freezing all day.  I did go to my workout at BCS Fitness yesterday afternoon and boy howdy, that was a cold walk from my car to the gym!  I was happy to be there and get back to my normal workout routine, even knowing that I'd have an even colder walk back to my car when I was finished, thanks to being sweaty.

Side note:  I tripped over my own two feet during a warm up exercise and fell down.  Seriously, WTH?  I didn't hurt myself but good god, I feel like I'll be needing that Life Alert necklace in the very near future!

  1. There is definitely a breaking point in terms of ‘too cold’. For me it changes with what type of activity I plan on doing!!!

  2. I think you made the right call on not running in that wind. I admire that you got out of your house later on in the day. When we get days like that here in Orlando I tend to hibernate and stay inside all day if I can.

I think we are supposed to be getting our first real dose of "cool/cold" weather here this year on Friday and Saturday. I am tired of the heat and humidity. I wish the weather wasn't so much extreme one way or the other. Next week looks to be about perfect with highs in the 70's and lows in the upper 50's free air condish!

    1. I feel the same way - why does our weather tend to be so extreme? Enjoy next week's weather - sounds really nice for you!

  3. Life Alert! LOL!

Here's to you having some cooler but not windy and downright cold weather.

Winter is here much too early this year. I can't remember the last time of us having snow in November or before Thanksgiving. Whatever it is that you had, is moving in here today bringing our first snowfall of the season tomorrow. I'm just praying I can get home before it sticks.

    1. Karma is a bitch - that's what I get for laughing at those I'VE FALLEN AND I CAN'T GET UP commercials. ;)

  4. I don't have a breaking point, temperature-wise, but if it's windy that's where I draw the line. Last week was brutally cold, especially for November, but the wind made it ridiculous. Today is sunny and relatively calm so I'll be heading out even tho it's only 24 right now...

    1. We ran in the teens last Christmas in North Carolina, but there was no wind, so I guess I'm similar to you - wind + cold = no way.

  5. Your snow accumulation picture is funny! We still have not gotten too much cold weather yet. But I am a weenie when it comes to exercising in the cold weather! I'd rather sit inside by the fire :)

    1. I'm hoping our cold weather stabilizes soon or else I may not run for months!

  6. Ugh, I hope you feel okay after your fall! :(

Gah, the wind makes such a different in the winter (and summer. and year round, ha). I don't blame you for skipping that run! But major props for getting up for that early one after a day of travel!!! That's awesome!

  7. Wind sucks and even more so when it's cold. When I complain about the wind and riding, John calls it "wind whining" :D
