Cranky Shelley Strikes Again

Excuse me while I shake my cane at some things that are annoying me.

  • Index cards.  Why are they so flimsy now?  I finally used up the massive stash leftover from our school supply box, and bought a new pack.  They are just about the same weight as a sheet of paper!  If I were back in speech class, nervously holding my stack of index cards, I'd flop sweat through these in a matter of seconds, smearing my inked-penned notes into an unreadable mess.
  • Food traps.  Eating has become annoying, what with the food traps between my teeth (a result of gum-loosening aging, my dentist tells me).  I can't even eat broccoli without getting it stuck between my teeth. I'm reaching for my floss picks while I'm still eating...take a bite, chew, swallow, floss pick.  So far I've only done this while eating alone, but just you wait.  I'll forget and do it in front of someone.  That won't be embarrassing at all.
  • My eyesight.  Apparently I am just not seeing things.  For example, I needed a new tube of mascara.  Mission accomplished after a trip to Target, but when I went to toss my old tube, I realized that it had blue writing on it.  Which I'd never noticed.  Which meant it was waterproof, which was why I felt like I had to fuss more with applying the mascara.  I probably had that tube for six months...and I never noticed the blue writing until now?  It's hard to miss:
...and it's not like I'm putting this on in the dark, either!

  • My eyesight, part II.  I happened to sit down at my computer when the light was apparently just right, and I realized that there were words and symbols printed on the front of my monitor.  I've had it for over a year (inherited it from my son when he moved), and I've never noticed this:
I had figured out where the off button was through trial and error; who knew there were other adjustments I could be making on the monitor??

  • The Boy Scouts.  This is the second year in a row that they've put a flyer on my door, saying they'll be back on the following Saturday to collect canned goods for a food drive.  This is also the second year in a row that I've put out a bag of food only to not have it collected.  Now, I'll end up taking it to the food bank bin at our grocery store, but it irks me that I fell for their flyer again.  Next year, Boy Scouts?  I'll bypass the middleman since you don't seem to remember where you are leaving the flyers!
What about you?  Anything cranky to contribute?

  2. Ha! I haven't needed index cards in such a long time (pretty sure I still have a pack from when I was in grad school... in 2009), I had no idea they were so cheap and flimsy.

I have the same problem with my teeth being a magnet for stuff to get stuck, it's so annoying!

I'm cranky because something in my office is making me sneeze constantly. And it's still winter, which is still cold and gross.

  3. I LOOOVVVE Cranky Shelley!

When you wrote "food traps" I thought OMGOSH, she has the same problem as I do. It makes me extremely cranky. But its the food trap in my sink. I even showed it to J. yesterday. "Its the way its manufactured." What happens is when there is ANY water in the sink, it forms a bubble in the food trap thingie, and then it drips drops one at a time, making it sound like there is a leaky faucet. Well, hard to explain, but extremely irritating. J. pointed out that if I would dry the trap off, it wouldn't happen. "THAT'S NOT THE POINT, SMART BOY!" (shaking cane)

    1. LOLing on your version of food traps, and seriously, who dries off their sink like that? Old J might need a rap on his knuckles with your cane. ;)

  4. Well you know it's pretty much weather that cranks me out this time of year. Annoying.

Also, we use the same kind of mascara :D

    1. I knew weather would be your crank. AS IT SHOULD BE.

GMTA on the mascara...but do you use waterproof?

    2. ...waterproof on purpose, that is, haha.

    3. I use waterproof on purpose on super humid days and evenings. The rest of the time I use the regular. A beauty consultant told me years ago that using waterproof regularly is not good for your eyelashes - it will cause them to break off!

    4. I don't like waterproof because it doesn't go on as lightly as regular. Which would be WHY I suffered so (puts back of hand to forehead, dramatically) with this tube. I'm a regular mascara girl all the way.

  5. The food trap! I have a large space in between 2 molars where I can put a piece of floss in there and it won't touch either side. they tried to fix it once with extra material when I needed a filling, but it is back again. Meat is the worst. I swear I can get an entire chicken wing in there.

I am glad to know I am not the one that needs floss after every meal :D

    1. It used to be just meat that would bother my food trap, but now vegetables, too? LOL on that chicken wing...I feels ya.

    1. Yes, we all can empathize with Helen and her winter misery.

  7. I'm with you on the flimsiness of paper products. In my case, it is Rolodex refills. How flimsy, you ask? So flimsy that I bought a glue stick to glue two together. Glad I found a place to vent about this

    1. That's aggravating! And you know, index cards are about a buck a pack. I'd gladly pay a buck fifty and get some that are actually CARDS.

  8. I love that you are nerdy enough ( that's a compliment) to complain about index cards. I totally get it. The index cards I got last time didn't even have any lines on them. Talk about making them cheap!

  9. Let it all out cranky Shelley!!! :)

  10. I haven't yet had the index card problem, thankfully, as I've been tracking all my books read and authors since 1995 and those cards are my mainstay! I would totally pay extra for thicker ones or glue 2 together like Elaine did LOL

And I am in total sympathy with your food traps :-( Mine were just awful until I finally got my wisdom teeth out last year. I was going through floss like nobody's business and had them stashed everywhere - house, car, purse, work. It's been weird to have a roll of floss last me for months now. And it hurts when stuff gets jammed up in there! You have my empathy.

I only have the usual things to shake my cane at - spam, people who run red lights, the grocery store dropping my favorite pancake syrup, you know, real whiny stuff. nothing like Helen's weather!

    1. You know, I sure wish I would have kept a list of books read - what a great thing to have started! You will definitely notice the difference in index cards, especially when you compare the new batch to your old cards.

OOH, pancake syrup! We used to buy a bottle that would fit in the microwave, but they don't seem to be making that shape anymore - it's all tall bottles. Boo!

    2. I started keeping a list when I found myself re-buying books because they released them with a different cover! My husband teases me about being so anal about it, but it doesn't bother him much when he wants to recall a title or an author we've read. He knows if the house catches on fire, it's the photo albums, the passports and my book card file going out first!

  11. Oh yay, I love to be Cranky! (Obviously). Loved your contributions.

I'll nominate the Apple iGenius bar thing, which required me to make an appointment to fix my ipod, then when I drove all the way down there couldn't give me the replacement that was sitting right there on their shelves (and they only had one left) because their COMPUTER system was down and they couldn't sell anything or even put it on hold for me until their systems were back up. So I had to drive back later and hope the computers were up and the replacement model was still there. Hello, Apple COMPUTERS?
