What a Monday!

Ever have one of *those* mornings - you know, the kind where you are dead asleep when your alarm goes off? Where you hit the snooze button a couple times, but finally drag yourself out of your nice warm bed, struggle into two, count 'em, two workout bras (not easy when you are half asleep!), throw on the rest of your workout clothes, brush your teeth and hair, put on a warm-up jacket, wool coat and gloves, and brace yourself for the rush of cold air as you go outside to your car? Which is covered in frost and you have to let it warm up to defrost the windows because it's 26 degrees outside and this happens so infrequently that you can't remember if using the windshield wiper fluid would cause the ice to melt faster or refreeze it? And then, after your legs are good and chilled because of course you didn't think you would need to wear your warm-up pants, you hit the automatic button to roll down your passenger door window which is still covered in icy frost so you can see to turn left out of your street and you hear a loud CRACK when the window is all the way down? And the window won't roll up and in fact is making horrible clacking cracking clanging noises? And you are, at this point, going to be late for your workout (when you are normally at least 10 minutes early) and you wonder if you just shouldn't have stayed in bed after all?

Yeah. That was my Monday morning. And I did consider going back inside my house and pouting over the unfortunate series of events that had transpired. But then I remembered that I don't miss my workouts, so I sucked it up and drove to the gym with the side passenger window rolled down in the 26 degree cold cold weather. Because this is my routine, and I'm not going to let anything get in my way if I can help it.

Surprisingly, it didn't take me more than a couple of minutes to get into my groove and forget about the crummy start to my day. Score one for exercise - I think I worked off most of my frustration at something going wrong with my car, so by the time Jeff came home and we took it to the mechanic, I was not having a hissy fit, which I have been known to have over car troubles (this would fall under the "why can't they just work?!?" statement that I am known to have uttered a time or two). Hopefully by the end of day I will have my car back, with a new window mechanism (to the tune of $320, argh!) and all will be right with my world again. Of course, I have been informed that the driver's side window will probably do the same thing pretty soon, so I have the perfect solution...don't roll down the window! You know, if you think about which window should have broken first, the driver's side makes more sense...all those trips through the Taco Bell drive thru gave that window a good work out!

And now I'll leave you with a picture of my pretty yellow Gerber daisies - a bit of sunshine for a dreary post!
Gerber daisies are one of my favorite flowers - the other being ranunculus.

  1. I really admire your determination to get your workout done! Go Shelly! A lot of people would of blown off going with all that going wrong. Sorry about your window breaking and ouch at the cost of repairs!
I hope your Monday got better after that.

  2. I'm so sorry about the car! I did have a 'drag myself out of bed' Monday, which rarely happens, but I've put in so much overtime, I knew that was the cause. Isn't it great how exercise always recharges us now, and we used to avoid it because we thought it would wear us down further? We used to be stupid. LOL Have a GREAT Tuesday!!!

  3. You are so brave, I would have crawled back in the house and possibly back in to bed! I've lost a pound this week.... it's gonna be a slow process :-/
Hope your Tuesday morning is better.

  4. Shelley! I am going to write about my doozy of a Monday and my own car-hissy fit today I think!

Good for you for keeping going and getting a good workout in!

And the car window thingy? I have had that off and on in my car FOREVER. Periodically they won't roll down, and periodically I put them down and can't get them back up. But I have stubbornly refused to pay $300 PER SIDE to get this repaired. Yeah--why won't they just work? I hate car problems!

  5. I had the same day last week. I'm so over the cold.

I used to have a broken driver side window and I swear, I never went to a fast food restaurant. I would never want to be the fat girl actually walking into the restaurant so I never did. I started frequenting them again after I got a new car and worked in the burbs. I would disconnect it myself if it weren't for things like airport parking and the occasional "officer my window won't roll down I'm going to have to open my door" :)

  6. Isn't it great how exercise can do that for us! Hope today goes more smoothly for you:)

  7. Neither rain nor sleet nor....

You are totally awesome. I would have had a total meltdown over the vehicle issues. And I do mean total. I am very sorry about the repair bill - that sucks! But your attitude is fabu!

  10. Do you have a GM car? My window mechinisms are forever breaking - I have never had one break in all my years of driving. I was told they use plastic parts which either freeze and break or get jammed and break - at the moment my back passenger window is not opening! Need to get it repaired!

Mr. P had to come fix it in the cold dark. bummer.

  12. What a difference a year makes - I am sure a year ago, you would have turned right back around and slid right back into a comfy bed.

Wow, that is cold for you - those are OUR Chicago temps today!

Kudos for sticking to the plan - you are my inspiration!!

  13. I have those kind of days myself! Way to stick with the workout.

I hate car trouble too. At least you have the money to fix it!

Thanks for your thoughtful comment today.

  14. Bummer about the car. I had that happen one time in winter, too and I zipped up my coat, and put my elbow in the window and drove like I meant it to be that way LOL!

We have the problem with the back windows dropping down like that, and just took out the mechanism so the windows are locked in the up position. Our car is 12 years old and we don't want to put a ton of money into it.

  15. You don't realize how much you rely on the old car until something goes wrong. Don't you just hate spending money on something like that too?!!

Pretty flowers, I buy myself flowers all the time. They really brighten up the place.

  16. Loved the picture and am very fond of both kinds of flowers (and all flowers for that matter - ever heard of a flower hater? I think my ex was one).
Good that you didn't let the day stop you from exercising. The past two mornings have been very hard for me and I can't figure out why. It's not even cold here. No excuses.
My back passenger window stopped working. I need a new car but that is a long way off.
Thanks for all your great comments lately. Love the support!

  18. Ai that's not a good way to start a new week but I have to be honest: I had to laugh. This could have happened to me so I know how you feel. And I'm proud of you that you didn't skip the workout!

I love the flowers, brings a bit of spring into my heart.

  20. Ever feel like the universe is sending you every message that you should stay home. LOL You are determined! I'm hoping that Tuesday is going better? Yes?

Hey, I'm starting my C25K program tomorrow. I think Chuck may try to do the March run too. It'll be fun!

  21. You get the gold star for going with the window down. Hard Core!!

  22. Good for you for not ditching the workout! Hopefully you didn't have too far to drive. Love your Gerber daisy pic-a favorite of mine too. I found cute cheap Gerber daisy wall hangings in my local Target's home decor dept. Very cheery to look at during this bleak January.

  23. You win the fabulous award for making it through that start and getting your workout done. Amazing woman!

I love ranunculus, too! For years, I planned to have them for my wedding bouquet, only to give them up when I learned they'd have to come from New Zealand at that time of year.

  24. What sunny flowers and I hope a comfort on an otherwise vexing day. I hate having to spend money on unfun stuff. Glad you felt better after your workout.

  25. There is a reason you have been successful at weight loss. You are consisent and determined. I admire that--

Sorry about the expensive window repair. My driver side window broke and if I go through a drive through, I can't order... so I think twice about going through drive through when driving my kia sportage.

    Lovely daisies.

  26. Wow, between you and Debby, you've had your share of car "issues" this week. Geez. I hope it's not contagious on the blogs!

I love Gerbera daisies, too. They make me smile. I like to raise them in pots on the deck in summer. That was a really nice way to end your blog. I'm still smiling :)

  27. So sorry! Great job on just working through it! I get stressed when things like that happen.

    Those daisies are so beautiful!

  28. Yeah, I'm really not digging this COLD in Alabama...I came here to be warm dammit! I'm sorry about your window, I totally get your statement about "why don't they just work" SERIOUSLY! Ugh, cars are such a pain!
