WWU - New Year's Day 5K

OK it was an unofficial 5K, but still, Andi and I met up at 7:00 am yesterday to welcome 2019 with a 5K.  Making the run good was the very cool weather - we had a feels like temp of 37 degrees, which I'll take any day.  Plus the sun was rising so we got to see the road/sidewalk for a change.  Andi is faster than me so while I was chasing her by a couple of steps for most of the run, this was my fastest 5K (and fastest mile) since I reset my Garmin last summer; apparently running with a faster person can help make you faster.  I'd say who knew, but I knew...I just wasn't willing to push myself until recently.

The only thing that could have been better was the state of my lungs - I have bronchitis and on Monday started using a steroid inhaler along with an asthma inhaler to help with the wheezing; obviously one day's worth of use didn't cure me, so that was a bit of a struggle.  But still, I was really happy to get up, get moving, and then spend the rest of the day alternately doing laundry/resting, putting away Christmas decorations/resting, knitting/resting...you get the picture.

Oh, Jeff ran 22 miles yesterday.  He just HAD to show me up!  Nah, that was his last long run before the Houston marathon - now they get to start their taper.

Workout update:  I made the wall...er, window!  December was the first month for me to join the Perfect 10 club, meaning I made at least 10 workouts last month.  It helped that I added in the Monday workouts, so hopefully this will continue to be a thing for me each month.

Spelled correctly and everything!

A woman from our group watched me take these pictures and I sheepishly told her it was my first time on the window, and she said she did the same thing, so I feel more normal about being excited over this accomplishment.

As usual, our workout on Monday was challenging but fun; I'm looking forward to seeing how my strength and overall fitness improves over the coming year.  I am really glad I went back to BCS Fitness - it's making a huge difference in me with both my physical state as well as my mental state, and those are very good states to be in.

  2. How exciting that you're getting faster! All that hard work off the road has to be paying off.

I hope you feel better soon! Just curious--why not oral steroids? They would work much faster than the inhaler. Just my 2 cents...

    1. As a chronic bronchitis sufferer, I agree Wendy. Although the oral steroids have way more side effects I think.

    2. My doctor preferred the steroid inhaler because it works directly on the lungs; she wanted to avoid the side effects that come with the oral steroids if possible. If that inhaler hadn't been covered by my insurance, I would have gone with the oral steroids and put up with the side effects, but luckily I only had to pay $35 for it, instead of the $281(!!!) without coverage.

  3. I'm in astonishment at two things: 1. I ran yesterday and it was 57 degrees. How crazy that I was in warmer weather by 20 degrees! 2. You ran with bronchitis. I'm really happy for your excellent run and new record but please be careful.

The window? Doesn't surprise me at all. I've always known you had it in you. Happy New Year Shelley!

    1. So odd that our temps are reversed! Funny thing is that you and I are both happy with what we got, LOL.

  5. How fun that they write your names on the window! And congrats for getting there! Can't believe that you ran with bronchitis! Maybe the cold kept you from coughing so much? Anyway, so glad to hear you are on the mend.
