WWU - Be Careful What You Wish For

Remember how last week I said I wanted to do the slidey board at the gym?  Well yeah, about that:
You know it's bad when it bruises almost immediately.

I was in the middle of a 50-slide set when I slipped a little, so I stepped off the board to regroup.  Stepped back on and BAM.  Down I went, whacking my hand, elbow, and the back of my head.  After deciding that nothing was broken, I got up and finished the set, verrrry carefully.  I am beginning to think that exercise is actually bad for my health and well-being...first the calf tear and then the slidey fall.  I'm not even going to ask what's next - I hope this is the end of me hurting myself while trying to get fit.

Despite the injuries, I am enjoying my group and my workouts.  And I do think it's making a difference in my body shape as my clothes are hanging a little looser on me plus my hairdresser, who saw me a month ago and then again on Friday, complimented me on looking smaller, so yay.

I finally have some running to report!  Diane and I ran last Thursday, and then again on Saturday, and again yesterday - woohoo!  I wore my new OG Hoka Cliftons on Saturday and they felt as good as I remembered.  I'm sure the combination of the new shoes plus some good running weather (it was 54 degrees when we started) contributed to what ended up being my longest run in over four months.  I ran 4.5 miles, and I haven't run that far since my birthday run last June.

The run went well; I'm very slowly getting back some running ability.  I was running with Diane, who had 7 miles on her schedule, and I'd planned on turning around at one point so that I'd hit 4 miles when I got back to the clubhouse but I misjudged where to turn so I stopped at 4.5 miles and walked another quarter mile back, which was a good cool down.  My calf didn't bother me during the run but I did start scuffing my left foot around the 4 mile mark, so I think it's still not as strong as it could be, but hey - this is progress and I'll take it!

One last thing - HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my running buddy Diane!  She's a Halloween baby and loves everything about it:
From last year's Haunted 5K - we couldn't find a Halloween race this year but next year we'll have to make it happen again!

  1. Falling is scary! I'm glad your not hurt bad. I'm glad the fall and the calf problem were just minor setbacks, and nothing to totally derail you.

  2. Yikes!! Also, whyyyyyyy is trying to be fit and healthy so stupid hard as we age? Not fair! Everytime something like this happens to me or a friend I'm reminded that I never appreciated my younger, more agile self, and I'd better appreciate myself now as I'm sure in 20 years I'll be looking back thinking I wish I could move like I did at 58.

Hooray for some consistent running. I'm sure you ran well because of the shoes. It's gotta be the shoes, right?

  3. Ouch! I've had some close calls on that slider board, so I feel you. I'm bruising so easily these days. After my long run last weekend, I had a giant bruise pop up on my 4th knuckle on my right hand. All I can think is that my bottle band snapped it? But come on man!

  4. Wow to that running weather! And no bueno to falling while exercising! But I have to admit I've had some pretty horrendous falls just walking across the living room floor, so I guess its okay to fall while actually trying to exercise!

  6. It is bad when the healthy thing you choose to do turns on you like that. Good for you for finishing up your set, though - I think I would have thrown in the towel! Be careful out there! But good to hear your calf is better so you can get some running in while the weather is just right :-)
