WWU - This is Hard!

I forgot how Brad and his team like to name workouts.  For example, on Thursday we had to build a sandwich in layers - bottom slice of bread, meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato, top slice of bread.  The first layer was riding the exercise bike for a certain number of calories, then there were more hard things that we either did in reps of that same number or in calories, depending on the equipment.  Even with my sandwich being smaller than the rest of my group, I was still dying during that workout.  DYING.  And then, once we all finished and took a quick water break, we started in on a second sandwich!  On that one, I was seriously dying - I'd have to take breaks every few reps.  My sandwich ended up being open-faced - i.e. I didn't complete the second round - and I'm OK with that.  I worked harder than I have in ages, but that's why I'm going there - for that extra push.

Yesterday's workout was a combination where we had two exercises that we had to do 25 reps or calories in total on them - they could be split up 10/15, or 12/13, or 24/1 - no one did that, although that is my goal one day, just to make Brad laugh.  It was hard (I have a feeling this is going to be a recurring theme, LOL), but I did OK with my calf injury.  Of course there were some motions that I can't do just yet, but they found others, believe me.

The interesting thing about starting my workouts with Brad this time vs. when I started nine and a half years ago is that I'm not as sore after each workout as I was back then.  In 2009, I was seriously aching and it was a challenge to raise my arms to wash my hair some days, not to mention how much my quads hurt when I would sit down.  This go-round, I'm definitely worn out afterward (my legs are shaking which makes holding the brake pedal down on the drive home a challenge), and my muscles are spent, but I'm recovering faster...could it be that even though I'm not a high mileage runner, I'm more fit than I realized?  It's a good feeling, even though I'm dying during each workout.

Calf update:  It's improving.  It is still full of bruises and there's a knot where the tear is, but it's feeling better each day, which gives me hope that I will be back to running again soon.  I'm trying to be good about icing it and I've been able to start gently massaging the knot, so maybe all of this will pay off soon.

  1. In a sick way, those workouts sound fun! It's a nice change of pace. Comparing the workout to food would make me hungry, tho!

  2. Does your gym have the airdyne bikes? Those are the ones that have a huge wheel that blows air back at you while you pedal. I H-A-T-E-D that bike!! If you had to ride that, I feel for you.

    I'm not surprised you are recovering faster - you ARE fitter than you were all those years ago.

    Glad to hear that calf is getting better!

    1. Yes, that's the bike - I couldn't remember what they were called. There are four, in sets of two facing each other, with space in between them for a lucky person to do a different workout and get that breeze from the wheel. I don't mind the bike that much, but Brad noted yesterday that I chose the side with the smaller-wheels, which makes it a little (HAHAHAHA) easier to ride. Dumb luck as to choosing that side, but now you know I will try to always go there!

  3. Sounds like Brad is really doing a good job of putting you through your paces! I'm sorry to hear about your calf. Have you been able to use that massager on it that you have that looks like a car buffer? Maybe it is still too tender. Good luck with the healing process!!

    2. Thanks for clarifying - I get very few Unknown comments, so I was wondering!

      I tried the buffer last week and it was still pretty tender, but I think I can handle it now. I also started using The Stick (remember those roller things from way back?) and that's OK, although it's odd to feel it bump over the knots.

  4. YES, you ARE more fit than you realize from being a consistent runner! I was just talking about this with a girlfriend who is a cardiac nurse a couple weeks ago. Even with not running long distances or at fast paces, just having the cardio endurance to run consistently IS a sign of fitness! So there you have it.

    LOL at the sandwich workout - I already think about food constantly when I work out, that wouldn't help. I'm glad you're challenging yourself with Brad's workouts! And I hope your calf continues to heal! Have you tried wrapping it at all? I was using KT tape or compression socks when I had a really bad calf strain a few years ago, and it did feel more supported.

    1. You know, I haven't wrapped it since the first night, when I slept with an Ace bandage wrapped around it. I will have to google KT tape wrapping for the calf - might be good to do when I try running again?

  7. I am glad your calf is feeling a bit better! I am sorry I missed the post about it being hurt :(

    I love the sandwich idea. I love doing theme-y stuff like that when I teach cause it makes it interesting for them AND me. You are kicking butt! And that is awesome that you aren't as sore (but still feel awesomely wiped out) - you ARE stronger than before!
