Knittin' Mittens

I will admit, sometimes I just can't help myself when it comes to knitting certain items, especially baby stuff.  Everything is much cuter when it's tiny!  So when our trip to Houston was approaching and the weather was extremely cold, I couldn't stand the idea of Logan's wee hands being exposed to frigid temperatures.  Logically, I knew that really wouldn't be an issue as his parents do an excellent job of making sure he's bundled up, but still.  It felt like he needed some mittens, and I had plenty of leftover yarn that would work perfectly, so I got to knitting.

Here's the finished pair:
Pattern is based off of Tin Can Knit's The World's Simplest Mittens, with a lot of modifications.  Yarn is Madelinetosh DK, colorway is Baltic.

SUPER CUTE, right?  But what you are seeing above is actually mittens two and three.  Here's mitten one, next to mitten two:
Mitten one was made according to the pattern, using their smallest size, which is toddler.  Now, I know that Logan is a baby so it was going to be big, but geez, the cuff alone was so long!  Just for fun, I brought it over and tried it on him, and it was as comical as I figured it would be.

Here's another look at the size difference:
Honestly, I feel like the toddler size seems narrow, if an actual toddler were to wear it.

I played around with the pattern, changed up pretty much everything with the stitch counts, and was much happier with the second and third mittens - at least they look like they might fit a baby.  That said, I realize that putting mittens on a baby Logan's age will not help keep him warm anyway, as he's at the stage where he's putting his hands in his mouth and chewing/sucking on his fingers, so the mittens would end up being a cold, wet mess.  But they look cute, no matter if they really get worn!

I brought them to Houston, and it was so frigid that they weren't taking Logan outside anyway, but we put them on him in the hotel room (side note:  this was T minus 12ish hours before the virus started claiming its victims):
We thought it was cute that he happened to be wearing a shirt with a mitten graphic, but Logan wasn't as impressed...
His expression slays me!  I'M INDOORS WEARING MITTENS.  WHATEVER, LADY.
FINE.  I'LL JUST SUCK MY THUMB THROUGH THE MITTEN, THEN.
NOM NOM NOM
As you can see, they fit pretty well, all things considering.

So that was fun, but I'm over knitting mittens - I forgot how awkward it is to knit using only double-pointed needles, and that thumb was a tiny challenge in its own right.  Still, you can't argue that a baby-sized mitten is just plain adorable:
Sooooo tiny.

I'm lucky that Logan's mom is a knitter so she's pretty indulgent with whatever item I happen to knit for him, whether he needs it or not.  Come next winter, look out - I already have some ideas brewing!

  2. Oh my gosh, those are cute! I hope you gift them with those clip on things, because losing one (or both) would be heartbreaking!

Did Logan get the illness too?

    1. Hopefully they won't go the way of socks - I remember baby socks disappearing like crazy with my kids, but if one goes, oh well.

Logan did not get the stomach bug, which has made us conclude that it most likely was food poisoning.

  3. Did I ever tell you about my Grammy Smith? She knitted a pair of mittens for Christmas for every grandchild (until you were 21)- there were 25+ of us and she couldn't afford extravagant gifts. She would literally take the week between Christmas and New Year off then start up in January so they'd all be done. My favorite pair EVER were red, with white H's knit into the tops.

Logan is blessed to have Auntie Shelley to knit for him!

    1. Gee, your Grammy was incredible! I can't imagine knitting so many pairs of mittens, year after year, but what a lovely memory you have of them and her.

    1. They do go faster than socks, but mittens are definitely more of a challenge.

  5. Oh look at you, basically creating your own pattern!! I'm so impressed! And Logan, what a baby! Doing just what you predicted (putting the mittens in his mouth.) But that one picture of him--priceless :)

    1. You should take credit since you're the one who taught me how to knit! It's been six years, can you believe that?

  6. I was going to ask if these were a total PITA with DPNs and the tiny yarn and tiny size! So freaking cute though. I love the pics of Logan with them on. I think we need to see the comical photo of him wearing mitten #1!

    1. I don't think I took a picture of him with the larger mitten, but it was pretty funny. Yeah, DPNs are still so fiddly to me, even after all this time.

  7. Those are darling! :D You should make 4 like them for Paco when it gets cold. Only no thumbs.

    1. Hah! Paco may occasionally model my knitwear for pictures, but I have no plans to knit specifically for him.
