It feels so good to be on taper for a marathon. Wait, I'm not running a marathon...but I am on taper for one, and it's pretty nice. I get to enjoy running just a few miles in the morning - last Thursday, Diane and I ran 3 miles and felt like we hardly did anything! That is a far cry from where I was a few months ago...we used to only run 2.5 miles during the weekdays, because running 3 felt like too much. Oh how my perspective has changed, thanks to piggybacking on Diane's training for her marathon!
So taper. I get the benefits of taper without the stress of taper madness, which is a real thing when you've worked hard to build up your mileage for a race and then are supposed to cut back shortly before the race. Diane is thinking, thinking, thinking about every detail leading up to the race (it's out of town, so she has to make sure she packs everything she will need), plus there's that whole race thing that she's thinking about, as well. Me? I'm just along for the ride, and it's easy street over here.
Our last long run got delayed until Monday morning - we planned on running Sunday because we all had a luncheon to attend on Saturday, but on Sunday morning, we had thunderstorms, so we had to skip the run. At least the storms brought in a nice cool front; I actually pulled out a long-sleeved shirt to wear for our 5 miler, which is pretty rare for May - but I'll take it over the humid mornings we normally have any day. Jeff, Diane, and I ran around our neighborhood - we've come up with a pretty decent way to run some loops here and loops there and we end up getting in a lot of miles in a relatively small area. I felt great during the entire run; I'm sure the cooler weather had something to do with it, but the truth is, I'm in pretty decent running shape right now, thanks to all the running I've been doing with Diane.
We just have an easy 2 miler on tap for today, and then BOOM - she's done. Well, until Saturday. Then she's going to run 26.2 miles like a boss! I've asked her to do a race recap, so we should have that up in a couple of weeks - I can't wait to hear all about it!
Haha! I'm training for a marathon that I won't run, so I'll get a taper too! Love this!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty sweet, tapering without having to run the race. ;)
DeleteI can't wait to hear her recap! I feel like we've all been on this journey with her. Tell her she has fans she doesn't even know about!
ReplyDeleteWill you be going to the race with her?
I will tell her that, thanks! I am really sad to say that we can't go to the race to support her - we have plans that are unchangeable on that day, otherwise we absolutely would have been there.
DeleteThat will be a fun recap, since we have followed her journey. She will do great, I know!
ReplyDeleteAnd fun to hear that you had a nice weather run in May!!
You have to tell Diane she has many many virtual friends who are rooting for her to have the best race ever! I have to say after all the tapers I've done over the years, I might not mind one where I didn't feel like I was going crazy lol.
ReplyDeleteI will be sure to tell her. :)
DeleteWish her luck from all of us on here! And yes...we need her race recap because we have virtually trained with her through your blog!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous last long run! Good luck to Diane! And WTG on getting so in shape training with her! You get to feel great physically and mentally, for helping her!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh how cool that Diane is going to write a race recap! I definitely want to hear about the race after following her training along with you :) Good luck to her this weekend!
ReplyDeleteGood luck to Diane - we are rooting for her!
ReplyDeleteOooh how exciting! I hope she has an amazing race!!
