WWU - Fall Down, Go Boom

NOT ME, for a change.  But Jeff tripped and fell down hard during our run on Saturday.  He was all alone when it happened, and hit his head, but luckily he didn't pass out or seem to be concussed (all of us experts tested him at breakfast); he was full of scrapes and got a real nice black eye, too:
Right after he came in - bloody, scraped up and already bruising...
That afternoon...
The next day.  I was jealous of his smokey eyeshadow!
Werk it, werk it...

Seriously, I'm glad he wasn't hurt worse.  We discussed having him carry his phone, but he said with a fall like that, he'd probably just have broken it when he landed, so it wouldn't have been much help; besides that, eventually we would have gone out looking for him.  No runner left behind and all that jazz.

As for my run, it went much better than the previous week's long run.  I ran 5 miles with CC, Diane, and Cary.  After just a few steps, Diane had to run back to her car to lock it, and we ran really slow so that she could catch up with us, which ended up being good - I never felt out of breath, and we did pick it up for the rest of the run, but that slow start was beneficial to me, big time.  It was really cold when we started - I was wearing my winter gear, including a thin jacket, ear warmer, and gloves!  On April 2nd - I just checked my Garmin stats and it was over 20 degrees warmer a month ago when I ran!  Oh Texas weather...you make no sense.

After our run, we went to Blue Baker, where the bakers gave us both cookie dough and brownie edges:
Just so you know, unless there's a big group, we almost always end up taking most of these treats home - a couple of bites is about all anyone can handle after running and breakfast, delicious as they are.

One of the bakers said, when he saw Jeff's injuries, that we all need to learn how to "breakfall" which is something that you learn in martial arts.  It sounds like a good idea but with my luck, I'd actually break something while learning to fall correctly...and Jeff felt the same way!  Maybe if they can wrap us up head-to-toe in bubble wrap, and have thick mats to fall on, we might give it a try.

********************

I ran yesterday morning with Cary, and managed to not get hit by a Suburban while we were in a crosswalk, crossing with the light (and with the pedestrian timer going), while lit up like a Christmas tree and wearing a blaze-orange running top.  We've had close calls in this crosswalk before, and usually are watching for vehicles to NOT see us, but we missed this one until the driver swerved and hit the brakes just before turning left onto us.  Scary and infuriating at the same time!  A couple of hours later that morning I met Jenny for a walk, so I had over 5 miles on my legs, woohoo!  Then I ran a couple of errands, and stopped at the grocery store.  I'd only had two cups of coffee and a glass of Nuun between my run and walk, so I was pretty much starving, and it shows:
One roast beef sandwich with a side of pickles, and I was much better.

I'll be doing the Cap10K race in Austin on Sunday, which should be fun - even though there are some wicked hills, it's a huge event and a nice area to run, plus I'll be hanging with some of my fellow Renegades, which is always enjoyable.

  1. That was a nasty fall Jeff made.
That's the reason I always bring my phone (I have it in an arm band) because I run alone and in Winter in the dark and early in the morning. If something happens I need to be able to call R. In all these years I had to do this only once when I went out for a run while being sick, he had to pick me up halfway because I almost passed out.
A co-worker of mine had such a fall to last year but she hurted her knee so bad she couldn't run for at least 6 months.

You bought only good stuff at the grocery store, good for you.

Have lots of fun next Sunday but I'm sure you will.

  2. Glad Jeff wasn't hurt worse. Having fallen outside on a run before I know how bad it hurts both physically and your pride. Not long after said fall I bought a treadmill which I still use and love had for almost 10 years now. Anyway, I hope he heals quickly.
For being hungry when you shopped you bought good stuff.
Have fun and run safe at you 10K.

    1. He didn't get a headache, so the (non)experts at breakfast decided he was concussionless.

  5. Goodness - glad Jeff is OK! It's such a habit when you fall to stick your arms out, but the best thing is to tuck the shoulder and roll into it. Easier said than done when you are hitting the pavement.

    1. Yeah, we both need to learn that tuck and roll thing...

  6. Well as you know, I've had my share of falls and thankfully, it's been my pride that was hurt more than my body. Thankfully most of my falls have also been in the dark and only one that I can recall in front of someone, who didn't even ask if I was ok. I hope Jeff is healing up nicely. Tell him to be careful or he'll poke his eye out!

I'm laughing at your grocery photo because all that food looks so good and healthy. You might have been hungry but your hungry and mine look different. Mine would have had candy and other assorted snacky type foods in there lol!

  7. Plus you'll be in Austin--super fun!! I'm looking forward to a good foodie review :)

That is so frustrating about the car almost hitting you! It seems like drivers are getting more and more careless.

Wow, as you know well, a fall can be such a serious thing. Jeff is lucky that he escaped with just cosmetic damage :)

  12. Hope you have a fun race this weekend!

Gah! That sounds like a scary intersection! What is the deal with cars there? I am happy you're ok! And, that Jeff is, too!

I've gotten pretty good at falling, from trail running! You should learn it!! LOL, and hopefully, that would mean you NEVER have to use it!
