WWU - 9 Miles, Delayed

We were supposed to run 9 miles on Saturday morning, but the weather here had been particularly bad in terms of flooding rain, so it was iffy as to us actually getting to run.  Still, when my alarm went off at 4:30 am, I checked the weather and saw that it was fairly clear.  Then I zoomed out and saw a really nasty looking band of storms headed our way, and believe it or not, my merry band of runners and I STILL considered running:
Green means rain.  Yellow, orange and red?  That means trouble.

Now, I will blame part of that on our barely-awake foggy brains, but part of that is also due to the fact that we aren't fair-weather runners.  Which can make you feel like a bit of a badass when you finish a run in adverse conditions...but there are times when you really need to differentiate between being a badass and a dumbass, which is what we would have been, had we willingly gone outdoors with that mess of thunder and lightening coming our way.  We decided to delay the run until Sunday, and with that, I got Paco out of his crate and we both went back to sleep.

So hey, I ran 9 miles on Sunday!  Yep, delayed 24 hours, but I'm so glad we held out...for one thing, daylight savings time ended, so even though my alarm rang at 4:30 am, my body felt like it was 5:30 am, which is practically sleeping in for a runner.  CC wasn't feeling well, so it was just Loretta and I on our 9 mile adventure.  It was lightly raining but wasn't that bad - as Julia says, "wet is wet" sometimes, be it rain or sweat or a combination of both.  We knocked out our run with only one ick factor, that being a fresh dead deer near the sidewalk around the 6.5 mile mark.  I'm just glad we were able to get that run in, what with all the crazy weather we've been having.

I also ran 5 miles last night - yes, at night.  I was supposed for run about half that distance yesterday morning, but Loretta wasn't feeling well when she woke up, so I didn't get to run (I am a scaredy cat and won't run in the early morning by myself).  Then CC, who was feeling better, said she wanted to run that evening after work, so I agreed to run with her.  Now that was an entirely different ballgame, running at the end of the day!  It felt much harder, plus the only things I'd eaten were a bagel with cream cheese, bacon, and way too many Swedish fish candies - not the best way to fuel up for a run, but hey, carbs galore, so who knows, maybe it helped?  Anyway, it's only Wednesday and I've already got 14 miles on my legs, woohoo!

Finally, I wanted to give you a link to some free video workouts by Pahla B Fitness.  I get requests all the time from people and companies who want me to promote their workouts on my blog, and how often do you see them here?  Never.  But this one pulled me in - I read Pahla's bio and identified with her immediately - here's what she said:

I don’t believe in schemes or scams or wraps or cleanses.  My workouts are never about bikini bodies because I don’t even have a bikini body!  I’m not the youngest, the fastest or the most flexible.  But I am passionate about starting where you are and working with what you have.  I don’t believe that fitness is exclusively for the young or the beautiful.  Fitness is for everybody.  It looks different on us all and it starts by being willing to take the first step.

Then I clicked on a video, and full disclosure, watched it while I ate my lunch, but I thought "I can do this" - and with that, I decided to share her website with you guys.  I love that she understands that not everyone is going for rock-hard abs, or is wanting to spend hours each day working out.  These are at-home workouts and don't take a lot of time, but I sure feel like I'm getting some good benefits from them.  I've been using her guide for new runners and other athletes; it seems to be a good companion workout to running.  Anyway, give it a looksee if you're interested!

  1. Good for you for not running in the weather and even better that you didn't skip but just moved the run one day forward.

Daylight savings ended here on October 24 and I never have to adjust to it but I don't like it that it's dark so early in the evening.

I am not scared running alone in the morning but when it's dark I don't leave my town. There isn't enough (or nothing at all) streetlight on the routes I run with daylight.

    1. My imaginary boogeyman is lurking in every shadow in the morning - come to think of it, I'm probably getting an extra cardio workout on top of the running due to my jumpiness and fear!

I love that line "...my body felt like it was 5:30 am, which is practically sleeping in for a runner." SO TRUE!

  4. Wet is wet. Mr. Helen and I always CRACK UP when people who have just come out of the ocean run for their lives if it starts to sprinkle. Especially in St. Martin where it stays warm when it's raining. It's just so ironic it's funny!

Nighttime running = not for me. I mean, I've done it and I'll do it if I 'have' to but boy oh boy is it just mostly awful. Hahaha

Thanks for the video link. You know I am always looking for things to use to complement my running, especially in winter!!

    1. We noticed the same thing in Hawaii, when the afternoon rain would come - panic!!!

Yeah, I don't think nighttime running is for me. We ran the same intervals as I do with Cary on Thursday mornings, and the same route, and I thought I was gonna die.

  6. I had to laugh about you guys being either bad asses or dumb asses! Glad you post-poned it! My Mom was in Austin this past week and the weather always seems to be crappy when she visits my brother. It's probably because she missed me - ha!

  7. I can't believe you ran 5 miles on that fuel! Good for you for getting it done, though! I definitely am an afternoon exerciser. I don't know about nighttime, though. I don't like working in the dark at either end of the day!

  9. Smart to delay. Sometimes we look at the radar and try to play a game of how far we can ride before it rains LOL! Not with thunderstorms coming, though.

My body doesn't recognize DST. I wake up at the same daylight every day, whether that is 6 am or 7 am - so when the clocks change, I will still wake up a the old time for weeks.
