Friday Mishmash

I mentioned that we saw McFarland USA on Saturday.  I forgot to tell you that our ticket price was an odd amount - $4.40.  Over the years, the prices have increased - this theater used to charge $3.50 for tickets, and then $3.75, and I think the last time we went to the movies it was $4.25.  But $4.40?  That was weird.  And then I wondered if they gave us a *gulp* senior discount (let's face it, Jeff is sporting a lot of gray in his hair these days).  As soon as I saw Loretta, I asked her what she paid for their tickets - whew, it was the same as us.  Sorry, but I am NOT ready to be taking that discount, even if I'm married to someone who looks like he qualifies!

No running tomorrow - instead, we'll be doing packet pick up for the Armadillo Dash on Sunday.  This is my first 5K where I'll be trying to run the entire thing; my secondary goal will be to finish in under 40 minutes.  That may or may not happen - I could have a major attack of race nerves, or I might just not be fast enough.  I am planning on doing a half-mile warm up run beforehand (I'll do the scary statue loop), which is something I don't normally do before a race, but considering how long it takes me to warm up once I start running, I figure giving myself a head start couldn't hurt.  No matter what, I'm hopeful for a good race where I feel happy with my performance at the end.  Recap should be up on Monday.

I swear, Paco has been giving himself the dog equivalent of hairballs this week.  Every morning while I'm at my computer, I can hear him licking himself - his allergies are much more under control with the medicine we give him, but he still can't lay off the licking entirely.  And then, suddenly I'll realize that the licking sound has changed to a horking sound, and the sprint to the back door begins.  I've been successful at getting him outside 3 out of 4 days this week.  Dogs.  Why do I have one??  Oh yeah.  He's pretty cute when he's not being gross:
I have to lay a throw pillow barrier on my lap when I knit, otherwise Paco will crawl all the way onto my chest, which leaves me no room to knit.  Silly dog!

This is the yarn I'm using - Manos del Uruguay, in MERMAID colorway.  I love mermaids, but didn't know that's what this one was called...turns out it was a happy accident I chose this skein!

Speaking of knitting, I've been working on a cowl (big surprise, right??) - I finished it yesterday, but it is a lace pattern and needs blocking to show off the design properly, so I don't have a picture for you just yet.  Because my thumb joint is still tender, I'm not knitting as much as I'd like.  Not sure what my next project will be - maybe today I'll spend some time looking at my library of saved patterns on Ravelry and match something up with the yarn in my stash.

Have a great weekend!

  2. LOL. Three cheers for senior discounts! You youngsters just don't get it.
I'd be happy with some batik fabric in those yarn colors, yum.

    Good luck on the 5K!

    1. LOL on the youngsters comment. LOLOLOL. But thank you. :)

  3. Good luck on your race this weekend! Even though the prices have been increasing, that is an awesome price for the movie. You wouldn't even be able to go to a movie around here less than $8 and that would be for a matinee!

    1. I know our movie prices are really cheap - even for Texas. We live in a bit of a bubble with some prices (and I'm happy to accept that, of course).

  4. Yes, totally good price on the movie. And yeah, I'm now champing at the bit for my senior discount. I think it should start at 60, and I think it should be called a "Congrats, you made it this far!" discount :)

Paco--he has to be part Dachshund. No matter how many times I take her off and tell her no, Sophie insists on trying to crawl onto my chest!

LOVE that yarn--it just looks yummy!

Good luck on your race, but you don't need it. You're totally ready for it!

    1. I prefer your discount title to the "Senior Discount" - sounds like an accomplishment!

Maybe Paco just knows of my dachshund love and is trying to emulate one.

    2. Some senior discounts start as early as age 50, and many at 55. I miss out all the time because I forget to ask and a lot of places don't advertise them. (I'm sure I'm not offered them automatically, because I look so young. Some might say pristine. Hahaha.) Try an internet search because there are restaurant, retail, and travel discounts.

    3. Pristine...I love it! Good tips, for those who are wanting the discount. :)

  5. Maybe 440 because it is a running movie? Har,har.

  6. LOL @ Lori!

That 4.40 is 1/3 of what our matinee price is (dumb luxury seating) and 1/2 the price of the "discounted" tickets I get at work. I'd go see more movies at the theater if we had prices like that.

I'm telling you right now, when Mr. Helen gets old enough for the Senior Discount, I'm having him buy EVERYTHING.

    1. Ack, I am just not there with getting that discount (yet). Now, if they gave it for something substantial, like airfare? Heck yes!

    2. Actually, there may be airfare discounts. Haven't researched that recently. My gut feel is that they would not be cheaper than most promotions, but if one is in the position of having to buy a ticket at full price, it would be worth checking.

  8. I was once given a seniors discount at a Ponderosa a couple of years back. No, I am not a senior and I was not impressed. Needless to say, my hubby laughed about it the rest of the night. Good luck on your run!

    1. Ugh, the only thing worse would be if I was offered a discount before Jeff!

  11. Hope you had a great run yesterday!

Ahhhhhhh Paco! Bella has the nasty habit to try and pick up gross things of the street. Usually I caught her before she eats it but sometimes I don't. Usually that is a run to the backdoor too later that day because she has to get rid of it :)

I would take the discount too. But in my case I will be the first to get it because I'm 6 months older than R. :)
