A Whine, and A What If?

In the span of 24 hours I managed to hurt myself several times - doing such randomly dumb stuff that made me glad I have an eye appointment next month, because seriously, what else could cause me to A) stand too close to the shower door and drag it across the top of my foot, giving me a lovely three-inch-long gash; B) randomly trip twice on invisible pebbles while walking with Jeff into the orthopedist's office; and C) SMASH my elbow into the door frame as I walked into my bedroom - I'd just reached up to pull my hair out of my face when I did that, so I hit it full on.  The pain was so great that all I could do was stand there, squeeze the elbow, and gasp.  One of those times when you think "surely it's not possible to crack a bone doing this" but holy crap, it sure felt like I'd broken it.  Turns out it's the injury that keeps on giving because every time I put my elbow on my desk (which apparently I do a lot), I get a nice reminder of the pain.

But this isn't why I called all of you here today - really, I just wanted to whine a bit over my clumsiness.  I actually wanted to talk about food.

What would you eat, if there were no consequences?  If you've jumped on the healthy living bandwagon, what food do you miss?  This might be a triggering post - heck, there were times when I was dieting that I had to change the channel when certain food commercials came on...they both tempted me and enraged me (I want that, why can't I have that and still lose weight, or dang it, why are they showing skinny people eating fast food?!  They don't really eat that way!!).  So if you are in that headspace, then it's probably best if you don't read this - I'd hate to set anyone off on a binge.

In reading the comments from last Monday's milkshake post, several of you mentioned what you stay away from because you know you very well could eat too much of it.  Pizzas were mentioned, and while I remember eating an entire Totino's frozen pizza back in the day, that wasn't my first choice.  Kraft Macaroni and Cheese - that was my secret indulgence.  Oh how I LOVED it.  One box = one serving.  If I made it for my kids, I'd make two boxes to be sure there was enough for me.

The funny thing is that I don't particularly like macaroni and cheese - I will pass on a homemade dish every time.  But take that envelope of orange powder, mix it with some milk and butter, and stir it into cooked macaroni?  YUM.  Have I eaten it since 2008?  Nope.  And most of the time I have no desire for it.  But given the right circumstances (weather, stress, solitude), yes, it comes to mind.  I don't act on it, but if there weren't any consequences (weight bloat/gain, triggering a craving that would be hard to resist in the future), I would make a box.  Just to see if it's as good as I remember.  What about you?  What food would you eat, if no one was looking and there would be zero consequences?

  1. I don't avoid food but I try to eat as healthy as possible. If there were no consequences I would just eat more of things I love. I love all pasta dishes and can eat a lot of it that's why I measure it. But if I wouldn't gain I would eat double of what I now eat. I don't have favorite foods, I like a lot of things and I eat everything. So it's not really a difficult question for me.

We could be twins, the clumsy things that happened to you could easily have happened to me :)

  2. AMEN back in the GLUTENY COLLEGE DAYS I could eat a box and have zero satiety...and want and often make another.

    1. I just figured it was the magical chemical in the powdered cheese that made me want more and more and more...satiety? Hmmm. Never thought about that aspect.

    1. HAH! And LOL. And now we get to the bottom of why you are doing that dumb race again. Love it. :)

    2. I'm doing the same race too (AGAIN). I'm trying to beat all the kids to the ice cream!

  4. Hand-cut French fries made from new potatoes and fried in peanut oil with a really good pizza heavy on the sauce and made with provolone cheese.comment from Brett, debby's brother who does not have a weight problem.

    1. Love that Brett chimed in! What is it about frying the fries in peanut oil that makes them so special? And more importantly, why haven't I had fries fried in peanut oil??!! Now I want to try them. :)

    1. Oh man. I remember making the cookie dough (it was supposed to yield 6 dozen cookies) and only ending up with about a dozen because of eating the batter. How did I gain weight? Hmmm, I think I know...

  6. I don't avoid anything but I have a few things that I work hard to control: cheese, pasta (and I LOVE homemade mac and cheese only and refuse the box lol), and desserts - my favorite is, of course, cheesecake. For me most of these things are treats that I only have very occasionally.

  7. Glad to see i'm not the only one that is so clumsy! Hands down I would eat a piece of peaunutbutter cream by from the local bakery. Every year I ask for a SLICE for my Bday and my husband ends up buying me the whole pie! ( he says it ends up being cheaper per slice)! I certainly don't want the whole pie but it can't go to waste, right?

    1. Ahhh, the better deal. Yeah, it's hard to pay more for less, but we are saving ourselves from ourselves, lol!!!

  8. Interesting question. Honestly, with the exception of processed food (which I had to stop eating b/c it made me feel awful), there's nothing that is totally off-limits for me, so every now and then I do indulge in things like mac & cheese (it's often a side when my husband makes dinner if I'm working late), pizza, ice cream, etc. I just try to remember that things like that are a treat, not the norm.

Sorry about your clumsy streak! I have weeks like that sometimes too, where I can't see walls, doorways or invisible things on the floor. I pretty much always have a mystery bruise from stuff like that.

    1. ...and isn't it funny that the one thing I'd like to have is completely processed? I'm like you, though - I don't eat that way any more, and I know I feel better because of it.

  9. Ouch! Your poor elbow and feet! Hope that heals up quickly.

I'm with you on the Kraft mac n cheese. What do they put in that stuff? Same thing they sprinkle on Doritos, I suspect.

  10. Yep, back in the day after I put Hannah to bed it was not unusual for me to throw in a 12 inch Jack's pizza all for me - of course I'd add more cheese to it, because it wasn't enough. I know I probably ate 6000 calories a day back then!

Well, pizza is delicious, but if I could eat anything and not care? Cheese and crackers. I loves me some cheese!

  11. At restaurants, I usually want to try their homemade macaroni and cheese. One of the hot spots in town has crab macaroni and cheese. Doesn't that sound like an indulgent treat? But, alas, wheat/gluten and dairy all combined together would leave me feeling yucky. So, I have the salmon and veggies and feel good afterwards. Great post:)

  13. Ouch! I've done that elbow thing more times than I can count! I always look at the door frame and my elbow and try to figure out how in the hell someone can do that.

My no-consequences wish list item is a biscuit. Preferably with gravy on it. I have it two or three times a year without problem, but it's one of those things I wish I could eat whenever I want without clogging an artery or two.

  14. I don't think I could pin it down to any single food to eat - I love too many kinds of food!

I hope you now have gotten your hurties out of the way and stay injury free for a long time!

  15. I eat like that now, unfortunately! Lots of candy and cookies.

My husband and I both banged ourselves on a edge like that - my elbow, like you, and his thigh. He bruised and we both felt like we had broken bones! LOL!

  16. Anything chocolate! Brownies with chocolate fudge frosting with cherry pie filling and whipped cream on top. Chocolate chip cookies, fudge, chocolate mint brownies, Hershey bars, kisses...like I said - anything chocolate.
I've been having accidents like that lately too. I hadn't thought about needing glasses, but I will be 50 this month and things are looking fuzzy. I feel your pain :(

  17. Elbow pain is the worse!

For me, I'd eat my weight in chips, salsa, queso and guac. Is there anything else to live for? I think not!

  18. I swear KD is addictive. The very smell of it cooking brings such happy memories to me. I would walk home, bundled up in the Canadian winter, walk into my warm house for lunch and smell that KD cooking...divine. It is my weakness. I haven't had any in a few years either, but it's 100% the food I would eat if there were zero consequences. I can't even have a bit in moderation because it sends me through the roof and on an eating binge. PS - 1 box is always a single serving!

  19. Aw, poor you with all those boo boos.

We haven't bought Kraft Mac & Cheese for a lot of years. Since I started trying to eat & cook better it just seems so fake. Frankenfood. For that very reason I'm surprised it even holds any appeal for you at all anymore.
I have bought the Annie's brand of mac & cheese for my daughter. That is my compromise. :)

  20. Oh owch!!! Poor you Shelley! Hope you heal quickly (and safe). If I could eat a big plate of nachos with lots of cheese, sour cream, salsa, guac and anything else without consequences, I'd have that FAR more often than I do. And my guilty pleasure that comes from a box? Stove top stuffing. :)

  21. I'm right there with you on the orange, powdered cheese. Mmm. Kraft is better than homeade any day. Now, if I could eat anything with no consequences, it would either be a large brownie fudge sundae, or an entire loaf of rosemary bread from Macaroni Grill. It's a toss up :)
