Friday Mishmash

Why does trial and error have to contain so much error?  I found out the hard way that if you cut fleece in one direction of the fabric, it rolls onto itself, shreds, and makes a terrible mess.  Since I am not good at estimating what I need I'd bought plenty of fabric and was able to do another cut in the right direction.  The result?  This crazy rasta topper for the hat I knitted for baby Helen:

This is a bigger size than the other one I made for her; hopefully she'll get some decent wear out of it.  I love the crazy fleece topper - it was a challenge to get it on, but I think it came out so cute.

I also knitted a newborn-sized striped hat for baby Davis, to match his striped baby blanket:
I need to get this to his mom soon so he can start wearing it - and also get my baby fix.

Honestly, I still can't quite believe that I am able to knit in the round and make baby hats!  They really are fun to knit and I can get one finished in a few hours, provided I don't twist my stitches when I join the first round (yeah, that's happened more than a few times...)(see trial and error reference, above).

We had a little social run for frozen yogurt earlier in the week, and since I was planning on running the next morning, I went but didn't run.  Which meant that I was dressed in regular clothes, and had my hair down for a change.  Two people didn't recognize me right away.  I laughed, but I get it - normally I look practically bald from the front, what with my hair pulled back with a headband and ponytail, not to mention bleary-eyed and no make up.  Too funny...but you'd be surprised how often that happens when you normally only see people dressed to run.

Speaking of running, I stocked up on our favorite GU flavors recently:
Some people buy wine by the case; I buy GU by the case.  I think this should get us through the rest of our long runs and races this year!

Paco's allergies have been really bad the last couple of days, and he's chewing himself raw.  The cone of shame had to come out, and to say he was not happy about it would be an understatement:
I can hardly stand to look at you, mean mom.
Might forgive you if you throw food in my mouth.  Right now.

It's supposed to be in the 50s for our 10 mile run tomorrow - the 50s!!!  Now THAT is going to be nice.  Other than the run, we probably won't be getting out much, as LSU is coming town, and apparently those fans are all kinds of crazy.  Best for us to avoid the madness and watch it unfold on TV - it's funny that we can watch the A&M game on TV and go outside and hear the marching band play - feels a little Twilight Zone to me.

Have a great weekend!

  1. OMG - Paco is so cute! Hope his allergies subside. Maybe you can knit him a cone so at least he'll be stylin'.

  2. The baby hats are too cute, I love them.

And poor Paco, hopefully his allergies are going better soon and he can ditch the cone.

Have fun at your run tomorrow.

  3. I wish I could have a grandchild just so you'd knit them a hat

Wow, the 50's? We'll be weather twins - might even be a bit warmer here. Enjoy that!

Poor Paco - he looks like he's plotting retribution...be afraid, be very afraid. Have a good run tomorrow.

  5. I love the hats!! I wonder if baby Helen or Davis' Moms would allow you to post a photo of them wearing the hats. Gracious they are cute! Hee hee.

Ohh Paco. He IS cross with you, isn't he. Just might be giving you the stink eye... Do NOT tell him I laughed at the photos & captions, or you may have to start watching your back. Ha.

The GU flavors sound good. My first reaction was that they were stacked - hers, his, hers, ha, but I'm guessing you both share & mix & match. :)

    Have a wonderful weekend. Chrissy

    1. Actually, the chocolate is mine (big surprise there), the strawberry banana is his, and we split the PB (blech) and chocolate (yum) box.

I'd love to get pictures of the babies in their hats...I bet that could be arranged. :)

  6. When are you knitting a hat that you can model on the blog for you??

We get that a lot when going to the coffee shop showered and not in bike gear. It's like - "Oh, I didn't recognize you showered and clean!" LOL Almost embarrassing...

50 degrees - that's our normal high right now!! Feels really good to exercise at that temp, though.

    1. So far I'm stumped on the adult hats, because most of those are knit starting with a rib stitch, and I can't seem to make it work. Next time I go to a social knit with my guild, I'll see if I can get someone to show me how to do it, because yeah, there's only so many baby hats I can make...

  9. Awww...poor little Paco. I don't see it as a cone of shame, I see it as "the cone of HANDSOME!". :) Love the hats! Lucky babes who will be wearing them! Have a great Friday Shelley!

  10. I can totally relate! The manager at my gym happens to live down the block from me - we often see him out walking his dogs at the same time we do in the morning, and I'm often in my PJs, which closely resemble my gym clothes, so we wave and say hi. But one day a couple weeks ago I was walking home from work, in real clothes and with my hair and make-up done, and I waved to him and he totally didn't recognize me! There's a new neighbor in our building that I had this happen with too. I keep bumping into her on my way to/from workouts, so once when I saw her in regular clothes, she didn't realize it was me. Just a context thing, I guess.

Enjoy your 10 mile run tomorrow! The cool weather will be so great after hot, humid runs.

  11. Heehee, your running buddies didn't know the difference between Running Shelley and Big Hair Texas Shelley? Weren't you still wearing your trademark greens, pinks and purples? I'd recognize you any way! :)

    1. He's a fox terrier mix - we adopted from the local animal shelter when he was about 5 months old. Poor little thing was found roaming the streets and had a healing scar on his ribcage.
