Friday Mishmash

I have been a movie-going fool lately...it helps that the matinee price (anytime before 6:00 pm) is only $4.00, so movies don't end up being a budget-buster like they are in so many other areas.  Max and I saw Ruby Sparks, which was really good, and also Hit and Run, which was awesome...my dad would really enjoy that movie.  And, I was proud of myself because during Ruby Sparks, I actually asked a women sitting in the row in front of us if she could hang up her phone so I could enjoy the movie.  I KNOW!  She was texting on her iPhone before the phone call, and then actually answered it and proceeded to carry on a conversation.  The crazy thing (to me and Max) was that she was old enough to know better - I'm talking at least 70.  See, it's not always the kids who are annoying with their cell phones!

I finally finished the striped baby blanket!!!!!  Every time I complete a knitting project, I am awed - me, the queen of procrastination?  I guess that shows how much I like knitting, right?  This came out pretty cute.  I love the stripes and the color combination - the only thing I'm not 100% thrilled about is the edge where I changed colors...it's not as straight as the other side.  Maybe there's a trick to that, but I'm just calling this an additional "handmade" detail and am going with it.
Soft and squishy - I'd love to make a full-sized throw out of this yarn (Cascade 128 Superwash 100% merino wool, if you're interested)

I cast on 100 stitches and knit 10 rows of each color.  There are 19,000 stitches in this blanket!
Love how the back looks like ticking where the stripes change color; left edge shows where it's not as straight as the right - that's the side I changed the color on.

This is for my former running club coach Joni, who is due with baby Davis in October.  I hope they both love the blanket.  I really enjoyed making it for them, and I love the colors that Joni chose for the nursery.

One more baby blanket to finish (the pink one) and then I'll be onto another fun project, but one I'll get to keep!

Max has been in town this week - he turned 23 on Wednesday, and we celebrated with Mexican food and a margarita.  One last hurrah of fun and relaxation before he starts school next week - he'll be a Super Senior, aka a fifth-year college student.  He's going for a BS in both Mathematics and Computer Science - I wonder if you get two diplomas when you graduate, or do they cheap out and put both degrees on one?  Anyway, this should be his last year of college, fingers crossed!
My youngest is 23!  When did THAT happen?!?

********************

Other than movies, running, knitting, napping and a bit of shopping (Max is now set up with a rice cooker/steamer...healthy dinners await), it's been a pretty quiet week around here.  The biggest excitement has been the opening of our town's first Panera Bread, but the parking lot has been filled to bursting every time we've driven by, so we are waiting for the initial thrill to wear off before going.  Finally, we don't have to drive to Denton to go to a Panera - nice!

Tomorrow is another 6 mile run - it HAS to be better than last week's, right?  I'm crossing my fingers!  Have a great weekend!

  1. Start right this minute telling yourself that you will rock that run. Don't forget that running is about 90% mental!

The blanket is gorgeous. The baby items I save for Little Helen were the handmade ones and I'm sure this blanket will become a family heirloom.

Mexican and a margarita sound like a perfect way to celebrate to me. Happy Birthday to Max!

  2. Wow, a rice cooker for Max at age 23. I wish I was thinking about healthy cooking/eating at age 23. Here's to a very long, healthy and happy life, Max. Happy Birthday!

  3. That baby blanket is SO IMPRESSIVE. What a lovely gift!

Your run tomorrow is going to be awesome, I can feel it!

  4. I love that blanket. Much better than the one I'm almost done with. (I hate it so much that I don't want to finish the border :/) Cascade is one of my favorite yarn companies - their wool felts fantastically. Those colors beat the hell out of traditional baby pastels!

My baby is just about to be 24...yeah, when the hell did that happen? Good luck with your run. I know you'll rock it!

    1. I'm struggling with finishing the other baby blanket - combination of boring pattern and yarn I'm not impressed with. Loved the Cascade, and I've decided that I'm not going to let price dictate my yarn choice since I spend so much time knitting with it...I think that's why I loved making this blanket so much more than the pink one. Oh well, live and learn, right?

  5. Happy birthday to Max!! You look too young to have a 23 year old.

Kudos to you on shushing that lady. The last time we tried that - it almost resulted in a fight in the theater, can you believe it? The guy was such an ass. This is why I adore Netflix.

You are going to rock on your run!

    1. My heart was pounding when I tapped her on the shoulder, but I was also mad that she was doing that! Netflix is awesome but sometimes I want to see the movie NOW, not in 3 months. ;)

  6. Really nice job on the baby blanket!

You've gone to see movies I've never heard of --must check those out!

Max is! More grownup than me --I've never had a rice cooker! Nowadays I just buy the single serving precooked brown rice from costco.

A 70 year old texting and talking in the theatre?? What's this world coming to?

    1. I've never tried the single servings of rice, but that might be a nice treat (and no rice-cooker clean up sounds pretty good to me, lol).

  7. That blanket turned out great! And no one but you would notice the stitching is different on one side.

Hooray for Max time! My niece is starting her second year at Denton - she's staying at Denton Place (I think that's what it is called) an apartment on camput - it sleeps four, but so far only she and another girl are in there - nice! And she gets her own bathroom!

OMG, get the Fuji apple salad when you go to Panera - its amazeballs!

For some reason my post didn't show up this morning - I am already at work, so I will have to wait for Tony to figure out what went wrong - I write my blog posts on LiveWriter which is only on my home computer. :(

You will have an awesome run tomorrow - I just know it!

  8. Yum, I love Panera. How can you have a 23 year old? No way.

  9. People are so rude! Can't believe someone would talk on the phone during a movie!

    Have fun on your run!

  10. Good luck with your 6 mile run! I love movies and throwing myself into a fantasy world. It's such a great escape so like you, I abhor people with NO respect for other people. I would have said something to the woman regardless of her age. That's not OK behavior.

  11. Hope you have a good run. Love the blanket.

  12. That's a beautiful baby blanket. You're right though, it would look really nice as a throw, too. When you get to Panera, I recommend the Asian Chicken Salad. Yummy. Happy b-day to your boy, I haven't quite figured out how my "baby" can be 30, when I feel like 26! Hope your 6 miler goes well. Cooler weather helps. A lot. And it'll definitely be cooler when you run your big race, right?

  13. Happy birthday to Max.

I'm sure your run went great today.

Keeping it short today, am testing this from my new phone
