It's About Time!

For quite a while, just about every time I post a picture of myself I get a comment (or three) that my glasses are too big for my face now. I kept putting off getting new glasses because A) they are expensive; and B) I didn't want to fork over the cash until my face had stopped losing weight (such a weird thing to write...but when you lose over 100 pounds, the weight comes off everywhere).

I finally gave in. In a big way, too. Not only did I get new glasses, I got glasses with what used to be called bifocals, but are now called progressive lenses (to make us baby-boomers feel better about wearing bifocals, lol). I was so excited when I picked out my frames - I fell in LOVE with the colors - something totally different than what I have been wearing. I got fitted and went home to wait the expected two weeks - this is some high-tech stuff that they sent to a lab in Dallas to make, yo. I dreamed about these glasses. I planned my first outfit to wear with these glasses. I couldn't wait! They finally came in on Tuesday...and I have been seasick ever since.

Dang, these are hard to get adjusted to! You have to turn your head to see clearly - and apparently I am a shifty-eyed person, because I have to make a conscious effort to turn and see what I am looking at, if that makes any sense. I will say that the nice thing is that I can see the food on my fork, and that whole "reading" thing is much easier now. I hear that after about a week I should be accustomed to these crazy lenses. Who knew that at age 46, I would be learning how to do something so basic as see again?

Alright, I've made you wait long enough...here's the big reveal:
Purple and turquoise - I love these colors, as evidenced by my clothes and earrings.
Different angle...

When I first tried the glasses on at the optical place and looked in the mirror, I was shocked at what was looking back at me - where did all of these wrinkles and huge pores come from?!? I thought I was aging gracefully! Apparently my old glasses provided me with that special effect - you know, the one where they put a thin coating of Vaseline on the camera lens? Ignorance was bliss. I think that along with your new glasses, the optician should hand you a gift certificate for a facial - it's the least they could do!

I also got a supah-cool pair of sunglasses - very sporty, with mirrored lenses. I've never had anything this cool - they didn't used to be able to do sunglasses with their curved lenses in prescription, but apparently this has changed. I will be wearing them tomorrow morning when I run in my third 5K - the Downtown Derby! I may not be fast, but at least I can look like like an athlete, right?!? Hopefully I will have some fun pictures, along with a race recap in a couple of days. Have a great weekend, everyone!

  1. As someone who loves funky glasses with lots of color, I have to tell you that your new ones are AWESOME! I love that you got purple in them! Good luck adjusting to them...my Dad had the same problem. I think he still curses every now and then.

  2. Yay!!! They are really cool, Shelley. Your new eyeglasses look great, & complete the 'new you'.

In Dec. I got 'progressives' too. I didn't need my old eyeglasses for paperwork, so took them off at work, but then I couldn't see who was coming in the door. Ha. So now I can leave them on all the time! It really didn't take me too long to adjust to the new ones, I think they are actually TRIfocals (did I want that? hmm not sure that was nec, but what do I know.) I kept telling myself ppl love progressives, it was what was recommended for me, if others can, I can..I can do this..and it really wasn't long at all.

Anyway, great new look, you, and maybe try to wear the sunglasses today, incase they take some getting used to fit-wise? Chrissy

  3. When I finally gave up the readers last year I actually went to multi-focal contacts - and a backup pair of bifocals with the line. I have lots of problems with motion sickness and as soon as I said that the glasses nazi said "No progressives for you!" But I remember Mr. Helen having the same problem. You'll get used to it and boy oh boy do they look so much better than your old ones!

  6. I love the glasses, but your post make me laugh it was funny. I have the same problem with glasses and I wonder when I lose enough weight to need new ones if I will jump back from the mirror and say nope give me the old ones back. You look great in them...

  14. You look very nice in your new glasses.

I need new ones as well. I'm a little bit luckier, though, since there's a place in Illinois where I can get decent $40 dollar glasses.

I need a new prescrip so that's why I'm still wearing specs that slide down my face.

  17. Love the new glasses. I'm fond of glasses too. They have so many fun styles now a days. It's fun (when you have tons of cash) to spend some on funky pairs of glasses. You look great.

  18. Oh Shelley - LOVE the glasses!! I am with you on the cost! I am blind as a bat, and my glasses I bought NINE YEARS ago cost $500! Can't imagine what they would cost today.

I wear contacts during the day and flip to my glasses when I get home - I am also laughing at the term "progressors!"

Have a great run tomorrow - can't wait for the recap!

  19. I always like how I look better "without" my glasses! LOL! Love your new ones, too cute!!

  20. Love Love LOVE the new glasses. Love how they look on your face. Love your haircut. And you have great eyebrows too!

I laughed so hard at your discussion of the wrinkles. Sometimes I am okay with it, and sometimes I find it very distressing. The other day I was in the shower (sans glasses) and I looked down and thought for the first time, legs aren't a bad size. Kind of blurry so the wrinkles and sagginess didn't bother me so much-Ha!

I love nice sunglasses from the eye doctor too. This year both my glasses and my sunglasses have a few sparklies!

Have fun and good luck on your race!

  21. I got new glasses a few months ago and loved that i could go in and find something that looked good not something that made me look thin.

You look great in your new glasses!
    Good luck with the 5k!

  22. Love the new glasses! They look great!

Now that I have lost weight people always comment that my face looks so different, but I can't really see it, BUT the one thing that has been weird to me is how much smaller my wrists are...I can actually see wrist bones!

  23. You are a cutie pie and look great in turquoise! Cute glasses, I had a lot of trouble getting used to progressive lenses too. Right now, I think my eyes are changing yet again, I can't see out of my glasses in dim lighting. Agh! Aging is a b&(*! Glad we can all do it together through blogging though.
I hope you have a great weekend!

  24. You look lovely. I mean that...those glasses are perfect for your face.

  25. Those glasses look fantastic on your face!! You'll get used to them. I used to work in an optometrist's office and it took some patients 1-2 weeks to get fully adjusted.

Good luck on your race tomorrow!! I think you might be addicted.

  26. Fancy new glasses, ohh la la! Man, I always feel all weird when I get new glasses too. It's like I suddenly have vertigo for a week or something. Then one day, VOILA I CAN SEE!

    Good luck at the race!

  27. OH MY GOD.

Those are AMAZING on you! Wow, they bring out all the lovely features of your face so much. And your eyes! EEEEEE! And they're chic and modern to boot.

I am in love. I want them. NOW.

  28. I totally relate. I made the big step this year too. I have to say it probably took a good 3 months to get used to the progressive part of the lens before I found the "sweet spot," but hang in there. It would be nice to get a little credit for a facial or laser peel or something...damn, this aging business is not meant for sissies!

  29. LOVE THE GLASSES!!!

    The look fantastic on you!

  32. CUTE glasses! They make you look very stylish, young and hip!
I turned 48 this past August and when I went for my exam in Jan, my Dr. told me I needed bifocals too. I wear contacts so tried the mono vision (one eye seeing close, one eye distance) he told me it would take about 10 days to get used to. I tried it for about 5 hours and had a killer headache. Couldn't stand it.
So i just got some cute purple and green reading glasses.
