Awww, Look How Pretty!

I was feeling adventurous at the grocery store yesterday and, seeing that Texsun ruby red grapefruit were two for a buck, bought four (I know, you're thinking "four?" Hear me out...if I only bought two and liked them, I'd be mad at myself for not buying more. "But Shelley," you're also thinking, "what if you didn't like them?" Then I'd be ok, because it was only a couple of bucks. Oh, the things that go on in my head...you really don't want to know!).

Ahem, back to the story. I *think* I remember my mom saying that she liked to peel and eat grapefruit like an orange (it may or may not have been her - I suffer from C.R.S. syndrome* really bad). So I thought I'd be brave and try a grapefruit for the third time in my life (really not exaggerating...I haven't found the taste for them). I peeled it, which was much harder than peeling a Clementine (obviously I have been spoiled), and then peeled as much of the white pith off of my little grapefruit ball as I could, then sectioned it and of course made a pretty spiral shape (why yes, I *do* play with my food!) and took a picture. Oh, and then I ate it.

I guess that considering it was such a pretty pinkish/red color, my brain thought it might taste like pink lemonade (well, not really...but something along a sweet, citrus-y line).

It did not.

Nor did it taste like a Clementine, or even an orange. I know, I know...it's a grapefruit! But the sign in the store said they were "unusually sweet" - so I guess I was expecting something better than my previous experiences with grapefruit. So now I have three of these lovelies remaining, and I shall do my best to choke them down eat them. But from now on, I will view what the descriptions say about certain fruits and veggies with a healthy amount of skepticism!

*C.R.S. syndrome, for those of you who don't know, or who are lucky enough to not have to deal with it, is Can't Remember Sh*t. It's hit this 40-something hard, I'm telling ya!

  1. I hear ya on the grapefruit. I keep trying to like them because, well, they are a fruit. But sweet? No way. However, there was some hybrid grapefruit thingy that was nearly as big as a basketball that I bought in Florida and it was good.

Use the juice to make a vinaigrette for a nice salad. That way they won't go to waste.

CRS is the bane of my existence.

  2. I eat grapefruits sometimes but have to admit I put sweetener on it other wise it's much too bitter for me :)

  3. Used to love Grapefruit -- but as long as I take meds for High Blood Pressure, I must avoid them.
    *sigh*

  4. Feel like I am playing catch up with blogs. I have had C.R.S. for years!

    The scales will move!

I don't like grapefruit either. Like you said, it's only a couple of bucks.

  5. OMG I LOVE GRAPEFRUIT ESPECIALLY RUBY REDS! Wish I lived close enough to take those puppies off of your hands! They ARE sweet! nuts!!!

I'm very lucky my bp meds don't have a 'no grapefruit' edict on them. Grapefruit juice is my favorite juice (well, after passion fruit, mango, and pineapple), and I have a container in my fridge as we speak.

I never met a grapefruit I didn't adore! Mebbers I need to run to the market to see if they are on sale here, too! LOL

  6. Not a big grapefruit fan either but I totally get the "more is better" approach - especially if a bargain is to be had. Would your dog eat the rest? Mine would.

  7. I love grapefruit, but I do sprinkle a little sugar on it and eat with a spoon. Yum

  8. I also love grapefruit and have been known to add a little sugar on it.

  9. I love the texas ruby reds. Delicious. No added sweetener or sugar. Got to be careful what pills you take when you're eating them though. They have some sort of enzyme that won't let your body use the pills.

  10. I don't know your stance on artificial sweetener...but when I eat a Ruby Red (which I miss by the way) I definitely use a packet or two of Sweet n Low.

  11. I am allergic but I do like them. I used Splenda or Equal on them though.

  12. Rule #1. Never eat food you don't like. Why would you when there is other food out there that you like, and you're trying to lose weight anyway?

Bless somebody else with it instead! Give it to a neighbor, or your husband, or the poor. I'd suggest you mail it to me, but it would freeze before it got here.

Or here's a bad idea - let somebody win it! And mail them to them!

I don't know, but do anything but actually eat food you hate. Bleah.

Can you send them to me?? LOL

  14. I like grapefruit but I do put sweetener on it.

Did I mention that I like grapefruit but use a sweetener?

Yes, I have C.R.S. syndrome, too.

  16. *giggle* I suffer the same CRS dysfuntionality.

You did such a great job peeling that sucker! I love grapefruit, but I swear I burn as many calories as I eat just peeling them.

It's so nice to catch up with you. My blog reading has been sorely lacking the last week :*(

  17. That's too bad they didn't taste as good as they look. I cannot eat grapefruits. The one time I did, I sprinkled so much sugar on top---so really, what's the point.

I haven't been to your blog in a while. So glad I stopped by.

    Have a great weekend.

  18. I have bought ruby red grapefruit before. I felt the same way about it as you did. My kids, however, thought it was the funniest thing ever!

    Have a great weekend!

  19. Maybe you got an exceptionally sour one! Try another!

I would NOT like it peeled and eaten like that. But I love them sliced in half eaten with a spoon. If I get a tart one I sprinkle just 1/2 tsp of sugar over the halves (1/4 each) and it makes a HUGE difference for only 7 calories.

One of my fave breakfasts is whole wheat toast spread with gooey, melty peanut butter, with a grapefruit on the side. I think the flavors compliment each other so well.

You can always just juice them. Yummy :)

  20. I found your blog in Women's Day this month! Looking forward to reading it!

  21. My grandmother insisted on eating these, and making us drink grapefruit juice as well. Ick. Yet, she would dump tons of sugar on her grapefruit halves. *snickers*

  22. I LOVE grapefruit!

Here's my suggestion. Slice in half and drizzle with honey - using a knife to make sure all of the grapefruit is covered.

Put under a broiler until the honey starts to carmelize - I then scoop out the grapefruit and mix with Fage yogurt (which I may drizzle with a bit more honey!).

    Definitely insulin worthy!

  23. Oh, try again! This time, slice it in half, and cut around the segments, and then scoop out the juicy goodness with a spoon. The white connective stuff is pretty bitter.
Ruby red grapefruit is what gets me from November to March without jumping out a window (or running away to Mexico).

  24. Grapefruit, and the juice, is the one food I've found that I just cannot deal with. It gives me gag reflex. I seriously spit it up before I can even get it swallowed. It's too bad, because my Dad has told me for years that grapefruit juice aids in weight loss. Oh well...gonna' have to rely on other things to drop the pounds...'cause it sure ain't happenin' with that nasty fruit! :)

  25. Can't stand grapefruit either. I want to like them. But I don't. Clementines are about the only citrus I eat.

  26. The only way I like grapefruit is cut in half and then I like to sprinkle A LOT of sugar on both sides and eat with a spoon. I figure all the sugar kind of negates the healthiness, so I typically don't buy grapefruit.
