Fish Heads, Fish Heads, Roly Poly Fish Heads...

...fish heads, fish heads, eat them up, yum!

That song kept going through my mind last Wednesday, when I broke down and swallowed a fish oil capsule. I was very leery of trying one, because the last time I did, I burped fish all day long...and as I loathe, abhor and detest fish, it was a miserable day!!! However, since I have gone all "healthy" and such, and seeing as I don't eat seafood, I know that Omega-3's are sorely lacking in my diet. The small amounts of walnuts, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower that I eat aren't enough to make up for the seafood that I don't eat.

So when Linda told me the other day that she found a fish oil capsule that didn't make you burp, I was curious enough to try one of hers. I am happy and also surprised to report that I wouldn't have known the capsule was fish oil...there were no fishy burps! These were GNC Triple Strength Fish Oil soft gels - and I definitely will be purchasing a bottle of them come October 1st, when my bank account is magically replenished. (OK, it's not magically replenished, but with direct deposit, it's fun to wake up on the first of each month and find money there. What can I say - it takes very little to entertain me!)

I've also run out of my second big (think Sam's Club size) bottle of women's One-A-Day vitamins. I started taking them in May of 2008 when I began my diet, and I can't believe that I've actually kept up with taking them. Every day - even on the weekends! Now that's when you know a habit has formed, lol!

And now, what with this turning out to be such a health-centric post, I thought I'd leave you with a photo of the big bowl of candy that I ate for my afternoon snack:

This was so sweet - my first bite told me I was eating candy, no joke! So I have officially renamed this melon "candyloupe" - eat it up, yum!

  1. That cantaloupe looks delicious! I've been taking fish oil capsules for about 2 years. I lay them out at breakfast for my husband and myself. It's a habit like brushing teeth. Both of us have had lower cholesterol numbers at each check-up. Could it be the omega-3? I'm not going to stop to find out.

  2. Girl, I wish I had your ability for form that habit. I've tried mightily, but for some reason, I cannot remember to take ANY of my vitamins or my fish oil. I have ginormous bottles of both. Sigh. It really is an aversion thing. Every time I think of taking a vitamin, I remember the pre-natal vitamins combined with morning sickness. Makes my toes flat curl right up! I think I need to get over that - the cause for the morning sickness is 26.

    Have a wonderful week, Shelley!

  3. I loved Dr. Demento's radio show with songs like that. In fact, in a previous life, when I used to teach preschool, I taught that song to my 4 years olds, and we'd sing it together whenever those fish crackers were the snack. LOL Good times...and thanks for that sweet memory! :) Have a GREAT day!!! (you truly help keep me sane some days...)

  4. I am so hit and miss with vitamins, except when I'm pregnant, then I'm good with them. I've been trying to be more consistent, both for myself and the kids! Thanks for the reminder.

    Cantaloupe? Yum!

  5. Interesting. I never had fish burps from fish oil pills, but I know the hell of which you speak. My prenatal vitamins had so much iron in them I had rusty nail burps - yuck.

  6. Man, I wish I had one of those magic bank account.

Candilope....you crack me. See it takes very little to entertain as well!

    Have a great day

  7. Thanks for the mention about fish oil. I need to take them but my old brand just switched to their new "anti-burping" coating and I just can't tolerate them anymore. I'll try the GNC brand as I'm sorely lacking in omega-3 too.

Lovely cantaloupe (that's what he said!).

  8. I eat a little seafood but most of it I don't like.

I'm not taking vitamines or anything of that kind. Been told that when you're eating healthy you'll get all the necessary vitamins. Don't know if it's true but as I'm feeling healthy mostly all the time (except for last week  )

  9. Haven't heard that song in years, but it brings back memories. Both my family doctor (for cholesterol) and my chiropractor (for anti-inflammatory) started me on fish oil. I got the highest concentrate I could find, which was the Vitamin Shoppe's brand. Only have to take one a day, and it contains 1100mg!

  10. Ha - I haven't thought of that song in ages! I hate fish too, but I know I should try to stick it in my diet every now and again.

    Candyloupe - cute! :D

  11. I don't know if you've tried the Trader Joe's Omega-3 capsules, but those work for me and don't have that burping issue that seems to plague a lot of people.

  12. Candyloupe is a cute name for it. I have a mix of melon today. Watermelon, candyloupe and some green thing. All wonderful.
Good to read about your fishoil. It does not make me burp.

  14. The candyloupe looks awesome...I just had some pineapple. Sooooo good.

I've been taking fish oil capsules for awhile now and I'm not really sure what it's doing, but I hope it's something good for my heart. I suppose only time will tell.

  15. What the heck is that song? LOL You'll need to post a video of you singing that, I'm afraid. I must hear it and YOU must be the one who sings it :)

I don't think I get much omega-3 since I don't do meat. I do flax sometimes, but I admit I've been lax lately. And I rarely eat walnuts. My bad. I know. Hey, I have enough to think about getting all this damn vitamin D in every day. ...sigh... You're a healthier chicka than me, that's for sure.

  16. I think the fish oil capsules are really smart unless you eat a lot of oily fish. While the vegetable based omega 3's are helpful, I think there's something particularly good about fish oil that you can't get anywhere else.

Too lazy to look up the study though...

  17. I take flax seed oil pills because I couldn't stand the fishy burps either! I am afraid to plunk down the $$ to try again.

  19. I love cantaloupe and I always say that it is as good as candy.

I have also been pleasantly suprised at how jogging has affected my body, I still wish I had a flat stomach, BUT I'm starting to see definition where there previously was just pudge!
