Ghrelins and Leptins and Omentum, Oh My!

What I learned from You: On A Diet...

I am doing something right! Yay instincts! Dr. Oz recommends that you pick a meal and eat the same thing every day (hello, Fage yogurt, Kashi Golean Crunch cereal and fresh strawberries). He says that by "automating" the meal that you rush through the most, you'll lose more weight; "...decrease your food choices and you'll automatically decrease your appetite and waist size."

I agree with him on this (and not just because I happen to already be doing it, haha) - as long as I ensure that the ingredients for my favorite breakfast are on hand, I'm not opening and closing the fridge and pantry doors, trying to figure out what to eat. Which, in my case, can lead to grazing, or having a much bigger breakfast than I need.

I liked this book, but I have to say that there were a lot of big words in it! Even with the fun drawings illustrations, I had a hard time following the ghrelins and leptins and omentum and most everything else that makes us eat, not eat and overeat. However, the plan outlined in the book makes a lot of sense, and Dr. Oz makes several great points for exercising.

Oh! Speaking of exercising - two things. One: I ran on the treadmill yesterday! I have not attempted to run (except for chasing wayward toddlers) since the 70's (before the invention of the jogbra - need I say more?). But Will was having everyone run a bit, so I tried it. I was pretty shocked at myself - me??? Running?!? I did experience a strange sensation, though. There was um...bouncing - but not the parts you might think...my booty was jiggling away! I did not expect that!

The other thing about exercising is that Crabby McSlacker over at Cranky Fitness wrote about my post on muscle soreness! I am so honored and touched by this! I was floating on air this morning when I first read her post! If you are not familiar with Cranky Fitness, you are missing out on some good information and great humor, not to mention funny pictures!

  3. I do the same thing with my food. I have a small variety of choices I give myself, partly cause I'm incredibly finicky and part cause I'm unsure of the calories in a lot of foods and I don't want to go over my caloric limit.

  4. I've been lurking on your blog for awhile, thought I'd come out and say hi.

I love this book. I'm picking my way through it. I know someone else mentioned this very thing, and I haven't come to it in the book yet...it would help if I started at the beginning and read all the way through, instead I just flip around like a fish out of water with the book.

I need to find this and read it myself. I eat the same thing for breakfast every single day of my life. I love what I eat, too. Lunch is pretty much the same, too.

So that must make two of us doing the right thing.

  5. I also eat the exact same thing for breakfast every day. And usually for lunch, too. Dinner is just a variation of the same thing every day. Too many choices make me go crazy. And not in a good way!

  9. Running?! That is great! And butt jiggling? Too funny - it must've been your imagination.

Love Dr. Oz but he does go a little too Latin/Greek on me too and it's hard to follow when I still haven't mastered my mother tongue - English! Luckily, I'm a creature of habit too so it's nice to know I'm doing the right thing with the same meal.

  11. ~~sniggle~~

I "flap" when I run. Jiggle too. For me- not so nice.

I read Dr. Oz's book, too. Need to read it again.

I automate breakfast at school: oatmeal and fruit. It' is interesting reading!

  12. Good for you for running. I wish someone invent the body bra so my entire body would stop jiggling when I attempt to run.

  13. That book sounds really interesting - I'll have to order a copy.

Great tip re eating the same thing. I *sort of* do that for breakfast . . . I alternate three things (Fage 2% with granola; egg sandwich; oatmeal protein pancakes).

LOL re not having run since the 70s . . . I can definitely relate! I've been planning to incorporate some running into my routine, but I've been telling myself I should wait to get some more weight off for the sake of my knees . . . it's probably time for me to JUST DO IT ALREADY :)
