Resolutions Revisited

With a month into the new year, I though I'd revisit my resolutions to see how I'm doing. I've copied them and put my updates in bold.

· Meet with a nutritionist (I believe I can do this through my health plan) and go over my food intake, which leads to: My health plan no longer employs a nutritionist, so any nutritional counseling would have to come from my regular family practitioner – and as dieting doesn’t seem to be his “thing” I don’t think I will bother with him.

· Track my food intake and keep daily calories to 800 - 1000, with emphasis on protein and fiber (unless the nutritionist recommends otherwise). I’ve been pretty successful with this – some days I’ve gone as high as 1,200 to 1,400 calories, but overall it’s been right around 1,000.

· "Shake It Thursdays" - this means that I will drink my NutriMed 420 shakes and have my favorite 300 calorie garden veggie pita from Pita Pit for lunch, for a total intake on this day only of approx. 620 calories. Thursdays are my crazy busy days - I work from 9 to 6, then go to a meeting at 7:30, and I finally make it home for the night around 9 pm. It's just easier to not have to mess with trying to eat full meals on this day. This has worked well for me; I’ll continue doing it for the next month.

· I will not eat baked goods - I have too many opportunities at work (hellooo, cakelady!) with receptions, open houses and fundraisers, and if I just mentally know that these are not an option, then there will be no opportunity for overindulgence. Excellent policy to have – we had one reception, one open house, one staff birthday party and two meetings with treats. I’m going to try and keep with this until my birthday in June.

· Get back to taking a multi-vitamin every day. Yep – I even had to buy a new bottle as I finally finished my old one.

· Increase my exercise, which won't be hard at this point, seeing as I have not been doing my Wii Fit or riding my bike lately, which also leads to: Not so much. Very little bike riding – it’s just been too cold for me. Very little Wii Fit as well. Must work harder at this for February.

· Choosing a tiny bit of exercise (walking) over a great parking space. Yes – it’s funny how proud of myself I am when I park and walk a bit to a store!

· Read "Refuse to Regain" this month - even though I'm not at my goal weight, I don't want to go backwards at this point...which also leads to: Haven’t read it yet – got caught up in Dietgirl and other library books. I will read it this month.

· Get to my goal weight by my birthday (June 2) - oh, and finally figure out what my goal weight is...150? 130? I really don't know right now. I’m losing, so that is good. But I still don’t have a goal weight. Do I really need one at this point? Or can I just see how I feel when I weigh 150?

Overall, I've had some successes. What surprises me is that I've kept up with most of my resolutions for an entire month - not my usual M.O. Geez, maybe some of this is becoming a habit! I'm not used to having good habits...who am I, again?

  1. Looking good there on the resolutions.

My advise is to get to 150 and then decide if that is where you want to be.

  2. Congratulations on your weightloss so far, and on a great start to 2009 with those resolutions. You can really see the difference in your progress pictures - looking good!

I loved the book excerpts you posted. I haven't read all of them yet, but they're on my list now :)

I've sent you an invitation to my blog, and I'm looking forward to getting to know you and the other "31" challengers!

  3. That is great that you've stuck with your goals thus far. I'm sure you will continue.

I just found your blog and enjoyed reading it. I too am 40-something, and just started my "diet" last Monday. So far so good.

    Could use some support... Vee

  4. Great idea about going back and revisiting your resolutions. Might have to do that myself too.

As for your ideal weight, I find it really helps me when I have an actually number to strive for so I think that maybe you should try and pick a goal weight, however, you may be really happy 10 pounds heavier than what you set, and if that is the case, the just change it. I think you will know your TRUE ideal weight when you are there though, you will feel it, and you will be overwhelmed with happiness when you are there.

It's like that quote that goes "shoot for the moon, because even if you miss, you will still land among the stars."

  5. Is the Nutrimed 420 shake only available from your Dr., or can I buy them retail? OT: Don't they know that 4-20 has a double-meaning for the pot-smoking crowd? ;)

  6. You are doing great on your goals....way to go!!!! I think it's a good idea to set a goal weight somewhere in the range on the charts or a bit higher if you have a good bit of muscle. I think you will just "know" when you are getting real close. My goal is 160 .....a little high some would say for someone 5'5 but that is a weight I felt good at and could maintain.........a lot lower and it's very hard for me to maintain. I don't want to be a yo-yo dieter anymore. Find a weight you can stay at.........and give yourself a 5 lb range too.

  10. Gosh it all sounds so...disciplined. (My big failing/aspiration) You've reminded me that I wanted to find out about Wii Fit!!

I have found it helps to have lots of goals in mind that don't have anything to do with weight loss or fitness! :-) That way I don't get completely depressed.

  11. I am still worried that you are not eating enough calories, and that your body will go into starvation mode and hang onto everything just to get you body going.

My nutritionist is affiliated with my gynecologist office - you may check with them.

Even if it isn't covered by insurance I am sure someone can meet with you just once to discuss a nutrition plan - maybe for less than $100?

  12. Sounds like you are doing a really great job and really sticking to a lot of what you set out to do. It's also a nice reminder to all of us to revisit our goals and see how we are doing.

  13. Thanks for all the great comments!

Anonymous, the Nutrimed 420 shakes are by prescription only, as far as I know. My pharmacy sells them for cost, which is $1/packet, so the price is reasonable. And the irony of "420" for a weight-loss item, when the other 420 gives you the munchies, is great!

Biz, I appreciate your concern about the calorie count - I'll have to investigate other ways of getting a nutrition visit with someone.
