Friday Mishmash

I finished my latest GAP-tastic cowl!  Sure, it won't be necessary to wear until late next fall, but hey - it'll be ready.  This particular cowl took me a while to finish because the first purple yarn I tried didn't end up being purple enough, and I had to wait until a better color option was available.  Plus, I learned the hard way that I can only knit with a bulky yarn for just a little bit at a time, or else my thumb joint starts hurting.  So I'd knit a row or two on this, then set it aside and work on something lighter.  I love how it turned out:
No shot of me wearing it because already too warm to wrap something like this around my neck.
Pattern is GAP-tastic, yarn is Madelinetosh ASAP, colorways are Medieval and Dr. Zhivago's Sky.

My other exciting, knitting-related news, is that I got new glasses, which means I can knit and watch TV while only having to wear one pair, instead of my old prescription glasses PLUS a pair of reading glasses.  Yes, my vision changed, but no, I was too cheap to replace the glasses last year.  But I couldn't take it anymore, so when it was time to get new contacts (a new prescription for them as well - why are my eyes still changing at my age??), I picked out a new pair of glasses:
One happy knitter!  I can seeeeeee!

The glasses are really pretty - I love the color (obviously I'm in a blue phase, choosing that color for everything from my car, to clothes, to the glasses), and the sides have a neat design:
Awkward side-selfie...

It's good to see clearly again!

Now that our weather has become mostly warm and humid, I'm sweating a lot more when I run, and it was time to put a towel in my car so my sweaty body wouldn't muck up the seat too much when I've driven somewhere to run.  I had a pink beach towel that would have worked, but when I saw this blue-striped one in the store, I had to get it:
Yes, I am the weirdo who matches the towel to the car.  Would you expect anything less from me?

We have our last 5K race of the season tomorrow - it's the Run For Remembrance, held at the firefighter training field, and it's always an interesting run.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Pretty cowl! I never learned to knit. I love to crochet, it keeps my hands busy while watching TV instead of snacking :) Blue looks good on you :)

    1. If you read back in my blog, you'll see that I started my "Sit and Knit" diet, to keep my hands occupied and away from snacking. GMTA! :)

  2. Pretty cowl! I am just the opposite kind of knitter than you I like working with bulky yarn and big needles way better than the #2 yarn and size 6 needles I currently have been using trying to make myself a fitted top out of Vannas Glamour.
I too had to update my glasses this year down here we have a chain called Americas Best where you get two pair of glasses supposedly for $100.00 if you want any extras it cost more but I digress I now have two pair of pretty glasses I can see out of:)
Good luck on your race this weekend.

    1. I like the bulky yarn for a hat, but these cowls get really heavy, fast. I'm with you on not liking the smaller needles all that much...I call them toothpicks, LOL.

  3. What about Paco? Why wouldn't Paco model the cowl?

Love your new glasses, not only the color but the lack of color at the bottom of the lens. It's almost like they accent your face instead of taking it over. I can already tell my scrip has changed as well and it ticks me off as I just got new glasses last year. But since I wear contact more than glasses I may just update the contacts and hold off on the glasses as long as possible. It's just annoying to keep spending money to see when it's something I did for 42 years with no help lol!

    1. Even Paco said it was too hot to be wrapped up in wool. ;)

It's funny, sometimes I go bold on glasses and sometimes I go a little more delicate. I was ready for a change, I guess.

  4. My mom was just telling me yesterday how everyone at the hospital she works at is into knitting and I thought of you! I just went to the eye dr this week too and the sales girl convinced me to get new frames even though I just wanted new lenses for my old ones. $318 later, she made a sale! I was so mad at myself afterwards for giving in. And to think I will only wear these glasses at night while I watch tv! Have fun at the 5K!

    1. Knitting is cool now! There are so many fun patterns and so much beautiful yarn out there...this isn't like the olden days of scratchy wool. You should try it! :)

  5. Love the new glasses. My vision has changed too....unfortunately for the worse. In fact I have my eye exam today.
I'm running the 5K tomorrow too. Hopefully the rain holds off.

    1. Thanks! I was way overdue, and the difference is really noticeable. Maybe next time I won't wait so long.

  8. I can see clearly now the rain is gone... That song popped into my head for whatever reason.

Love the new glasses. I am just about at the threshold for needing reading glasses and I imagine my next op visit will have me getting those.

  9. Wow, a really beautiful blue post! LOVE the new glasses, esp. the design on the side. Surfer girl comes to mind for some reason. Perfect for a former Santa Cruz-ian. Now when I drive around and see a car I like, the thought process is "ooh, I like that car. Oh, its a Mini Cooper. Oooohhhh, Shelley has one of those!!"

Love the cowl, and you're making me want to knit seed stitch again!

I remember that race from last year--it was fun, and I am looking forward to another good race report :)

  10. Love the glasses Shelley, and I had no doubt you would color coordinate the towel to match the car!

  11. Your new glasses are very flattering. I am so tired of flipping between my reading & distance glasses & often misplacing them on the top of my head!! This getting old is no fun, eh? Cheers for a great weekend!

  12. I saw those same frames, Shelley! They look great on you. I ended up using the frames I had previously for some computer glasses. They are blue too. I'm older than you are, and I'm sorry to tell ya, I still have to get new glasses every couple of years.

I might snag that beyooteeful cowl for watching my great-niece's soccer games. We nearly frozed last week.

  13. Great glasses, looks very good on you.

Hmmm I don't think it's weird you bought a blue towel. I bought a new leash for Bella: it's red and I also bought a water bottle that I can drink from and there's a cup a the bottom for Bella. Of course it's red because it has to match with her leash :) I'm the same like you.
