Wednesday Workout Update

Since I wasn't thrilled with my performance at the LOVE RUN, I decided to run another 5K on my own, so Monday morning Jeff and I woke up early to run 3.1 miles through our neighborhood.  However, it was raining pretty hard.  But we still ran.  Squish, squish, squish...we were drenched and cold, and then the wind kicked up and we had the "do we REALLY need to be doing this" moment, and ended up cutting the run at 2 miles.  So no 5K redemption just yet.  Soon, though.

About a month ago I finally got fed up with having freezing cold hands when I run.  I'd been wearing two pairs of gloves, but on chilly mornings my hands would hurt, they were still so cold.  I bit the bullet and bought a spendy pair of Brooks gloves...and holy cow.  WHY did I wait so long?!!
Left hand shows the glove; right hand shows it with the windbreaker/mitten cover.  There are MP3 dealies on the thumbs (I don't use one so have no idea how well they work), and the thumb cap flips back for smartphone use.

These are gloves that come with a windbreaker/mitten cover - it tucks into the top of the glove when you don't need to use it.  I can't believe how much warmer my hands are when I wear them...and that extra layer with the mitten part?  Even better.  Know how I can tell?  Because my thumb, which isn't covered by the windbreaker, is still cold.  I had a good discount at the running store when I bought them, but they were still over $20...while I have no problem spending money on running shoes, I've stayed with the cheapie knit gloves that Target sells, usually two pair for a couple bucks.  My hands are happy they've finally gained the same status as my feet.

I had a high mileage month for January - 51 miles ran!  I won't be coming close to topping that for quite a while now, as the end is in sight for our long runs.  In fact, I only have two more - an 11 miler this Saturday, and then the half marathon on March 3rd.  Wow, after so many months of running long, it's going to be weird to only run shorter distances...but weird in a good way.  I think my body is ready for a break; my ankle has been hurting me again for over a month now so it's time to scale back and only (only!) run 3 - 5 miles on a Saturday.  Ahhh, that is going to be so nice!

  1. When it comes to running clothes, accessoires and shoes I don't buy it very cheap. I've noticed over the years the quality stuff is quality for a reason. I have running gloves but no idea what brand they are but they are my rescue in Winter.

    51 miles! COOL!
It's funny that when you are going to run less miles, it's the plan that I am going to run more. At least more than I have done the past 1.5 years.

Have a good day my friend.

    1. How funny, we're moving to different cycles in running. But at least we're both still running, right?

  3. I buy cheap for summer running and spend whatever I need to for winter running. Sometimes it pays off in a big way to spend a little extra. I'm looking for a good jacket right now. Can you believe the really expensive one Mr. Helen bought me 10 years ago is finally worn out?

    1. Hopefully you can find a nice jacket at clearance prices...because, you know, winter is over. At least according to the stores!

  4. Why have I not known about those gloves!! I could use those just walking to and from work, my gloves suck. And that windbreaker thing is adorable!

  5. I never knew they made gloves just for runners! That windbreaker idea is really cute. My hands get so cold, pretty much all the time. I have some very nice gloves, and I also have some gloves that I have knit! Now if I would just remember to wear them.

  7. Ooh I love those gloves! I was thisclose to having a pair of my own during a holiday gift swap, but we were playing Yankee Swap, so I lost them! I think we might have slightly different tolerances for cold - I only need gloves for my entire run when it's below 20, and I hope it's not that cold there! I have a really great pair by Mizuno, if you ever need another pair.

Also, thank you so much for your comment on my post this morning! I've been meaning to tell you how much I enjoy reading your blog because you're such an inspiration to me on my own journey, especially since you've managed to maintain so well and ignore the scale.

  9. Will be interesting to see how your body (and mind) end up liking the change of pace with shorter runs!

For me, mixing things up and experimenting is always good, especially when injuries are involved. Enjoy the 5K!
