Friday Randomness

Really HEB? You can't just sell fruit on its own merits - you have to suggest sauteing it in butter??? Ahhh, you know you live in Texas when the grocery store wants you to fry your apricots!

There is a special place in my heart for Woman's Day magazine - after all, they were the first (and so far, the only) magazine to write about me - ME! So when they emailed, asking if I would help publicize their new project, of course I said yes. The Woman's Day SlimDown with Joy Bauer will help selected participants reach their weight loss goals with a diet plan and personalized counseling. They'll also share their experience with Woman's Day readers by blogging on WomansDay.com from August 2010 - January 2011. Click here to enter if you are interested.

I'm feeling better now. Even went for a bike ride on Thursday evening - everything had dried out from our tremendous rain event (don't you love it when weathermen call it that?) of Wednesday. Check out these pictures of the park where Jenny and I run:
We ran across this bridge on Tuesday...normally the water is no where near this high! That sign sticking up in the center of the picture is a Frisbee (or disc, if you will) golf basket - normally there is a tiny creek with the Frisbee golf baskets throughout the area.

This being Texas, everything is almost back to normal already. I have never seen such extreme weather like we have here...sure keeps you on your toes!

The other day, Leslie said she was "snail-pacing" her weight-loss. Boy, do I ever understand that! But I have to say, that even though it's been six months since I hit 100 pounds lost, and I've only lost eight pounds since then, I am losing. And as we all know, a slow weight loss is better than no weight loss. Here's something interesting that I found when I went back to read my milestone post, and it ties in with Fashion Friday. Back in November, I posed for a picture with my "100-pound boots" (my reward to myself) in the same dress that I wore to work yesterday. I am only eight pounds lighter, but the dress is much looser on me now. I know I keep saying this, but it's the workouts and the running that is changing my body shape so much.

********************

And now, it's time for another exciting installment of Fashion Friday! I have to apologize for the poor quality of the pictures - black is a hard color to photograph, especially indoors and into a mirror. One of these days I'll have to figure out a better system for taking the pictures - it's not easy to do self-portraits!

I do love this belt - thank you, everyone, for convincing me to keep it!

Anyway, I'm wearing my basic black dress, with a teal camisole that I realized went with the new/old (heritage?) blue necklace that my mom gave me for my birthday - sweet! I'm also wearing the silver belt that y'all gave me so much advice on. I have to say that it felt a little strange to wear it higher that my "pants waist" but I think it made my waist look better. I think the dress might be a little long, but I'm too cheap to have it hemmed. And I think I could do better in the shoe area - but I don't know what would look good. While I'm in California next month visiting Barbara, we can go shoe shopping - but what do you suggest I look for? I'm kind of clueless when it comes to shoe fashion.

Close up so you can see how perfectly the necklace goes with the camisole - I got lots of compliments on the necklace and it was a good story to tell of how it came about. Thanks again, Mom!

Have a good weekend - I plan on getting to know Ricky Bobby better (shhh, don't tell Jeff!).

  2. First of all....ewwww to the idea of sauteing apricots in butter! That just doesn't sound good to me (maybe that's a good thing). Second of all, LOVE the outfit! I just bought a basic black dress that looks good with silver gladiator sandals...they were like $20 at Payless! I know the turquoise shoes got lost with the black dress but maybe something metallic or more in the primary color area would work? And maybe something with a small wedge to it?

And I don't think the dress is too long :-)

  3. Only "Eight" pounds loss huh? Bet you'd be upset if you gained "only" 8 pounds so give yourself credit there. On me at short 5'6 eight pounds is a dress size.
No to butter on the apricots that doesn't even sound good.

Love the dress, belt, necklace. I love shoes even though I go barefoot a lot:) I digress..A sandal with a bold color with a little heel or a pump with a wedge so many options there just have fun pick something you love and go for it!
Have fun with Ricky Bobby I won't tell Jeff:)

  4. Flash floods are astonishing things, indeed!

Oh yeah, I LOVE the belt up high on you! Great look. If you want to make the dress not seem as long without hemming it, try it with some heels next time. That should elongate your leg just fine. Optical illusions, baby!

Ooooh, I wish we could go shoe shopping together! It's really hard to know what to get until you are there, trying on styles. My advice is to take a couple of chances and try on new styles that you think you would NEVER wear. Just see what they look like on. You never know!

  5. I really like the look of that whole outfit. Shoes are my favorite accessory - and weakness so the idea that you are "shoe clueless" is a completely foreign concept to me! One day when you and Biz and me are neighbors, I'll take you shoe shopping while she cooks us a meal :-)

Your rain event made my local news this morning!

  6. Fried apricots? LOL You do realize that butter makes everything better, right? And a little cinnamon and sugar and vanilla bean ice cream. It can work, I tell you. :) LOL

LOVE that dress with that necklace! You are doing so terrific. I know I've said it before but I'm proud of you.

And thanks for your sweet words yesterday. ((HUGS))

Have a wonderful weekend with Ricky Bobby. Tell Master Jeff I said hi.

  7. apricots in butter - YUCK! well I shouldn't say that I never tried it but doesn't sound like something I would like to try!
I love that dress on you girl, you are smokin!
    Have a great weekend!

  8. Gotta love global warming. Frost advisory up here, heavy rains down there.

Losing weight is so great, but more important is that it is staying off. I have noticed how much my body shape has changed in the last couple years at around the same weight. Weights and the 40s are an excellent combo.

  9. We get the same kind of weather starting in about July. Dry heat my A**.

Loved this week's outfit. I really look forward to Friday! I am thinking I might try some wedges. I usually don't wear heels, but I hear they aren't too bad. I am such a creature of habit. Changing shoes is even a major decision.

    Have a great weekend!

  10. Wow, it looks like the water is almost up to the bridge?! Guess it probably felt that way too as you crossed it.

I really like this dress, and I like the length on you. I was going to suggest a platform type wedge. I am not nuts about too high a heel, but found that these are actually comfy. (My brain always thought high heels = pain, but not so with a lot of wedges.)

Love the necklace & cami. Love the story behind the necklace. Like the belt with this too, and I can't really tell in the pic that it is up high. Guess it felt high.

This is a link to DSW, to show a shoe I got there that is comfortable. It was made in black w/a silver ring, [but I think they only have size 11 anymore online.]

  11. I know what you mean about the weather. Sorry, I forgot where you said you live. I live about 20
min. from New Braunfels that got POUNDED again! Us, 20 minutes from their, barely got spit on. Texas is so unpredictable.

I love the black dress on you, really shows your tiny waist!

  12. The belt looks so good on you - your waist looks teeny tiny!

I have to say, being the same height as you, it's ALWAYS worth it to get things hemmed. I got the dress in my most recent post hemmed about 1.5 inches and it looks SO much better on my short legs :) Plus, I had it sent out from a laundromat and it was only 10$ :)

  13. Love the outfit!
    The rain in Texas!

Butter-fried apricots??? Good gawd. I guess the reason you have to fry apricots in butter is because they have grown completely tasteless over the years. Butter will at least add some flavor back in. oh, and add some A1 sauce.

When you are shoe shopping, you can look for flip flops. That is all they sell out here.

  14. I don't think Noah belt the arc for a "rain event."

Regardless, you looking great in that dress!

  15. belt? Built, of course...I guess your post about your Belt had me all goofy.

  16. Fried apricots! I have never heard of that. Ughhh!

That dress looks great because you are accenting the slimmest part of your body - your waist. Very flattering Shelley.

I would suggest you and Barbara go to DSW and the Gilroy Outlets

  17. P.S. I would love to be your neighbors too!

  18. Apricots in butter? Blehhhhhhhh that can't taste well.

Shelley I love, love, love the dress! I don't think it's too long.

Boy you did got a lot of rain over there. Strange weather it is these days all over the world. Not always for the better.

Have fun this weekend with Ricky euh Jeff :)

  19. That high-placed belt on the dress does look great - I think that for a lot of women, our most slender part is not too far under the bust rather than at the actual waist. So that's an excellent place to nip in.

I'm delighted with the dress look, but, like everyone else, distressed by the fried apricots. Oh my word.

  20. You look so pretty. Although heals are so uncomfortable, a cute heal (small) would look great!
    Glad you are feeling better.

  21. Apricots in butter? Paula Deen must be loving that. :)

    Love the dress & necklace.

  22. Loved Pod's comment about the apricots. I grew up with an apricot tree in the backyard, and the ones now do seem completely tasteless.

LOVE your outfit. That necklace is something else! Your comment about not hemming it--I sure could relate.

And, the weather in Texas. Those flash floods are just astounding. I was in one once, trying to leave a house carrying dogs, and the water almost went over my head! What a mess that was. (That was when I lived in Wichita Falls, which was pretty famous for its weather.

  23. I love your fashion fridays! I had to laugh that you were too cheap to hem the dress - I would be too, luckily my mom sews!

I mainly did my post because I thought you would worry! I am using Hannah's old laptop (6 years old!) and it is slow - hope to get my pictures up tomorrow morning!

  24. Apricots are not one of my favorite fruits, not even cooked in butter.
We have had really wet weather here in UT too.. and they say we live in the desert.. HA!
I love your fashion Friday, Your dress does look like it fits you very different, amazing what weight lifting does to your body. Your necklace looks good with your outfit and the story behind it makes it very cool!

  25. I think that's a beautiful outfit - you look gorgeous!

  26. This outfit is REALLY cute and flattering. Do you have some strappy sandals, maybe with a bit of a heel? That would look fabulous!

  27. Thanks for blogging your story. I posted my first blog on June 6th to document what I hope will be a story with an ending just like yours. Again, thanks for the inspiration.
