WWU - Trainers, They're Just Like Us!

I know that all of the trainers at BCS Fitness workout every day - in fact, they usually do the same workouts that we do so they know exactly how to guide us.  But here's the thing:  when they demonstrate how to do something, they make it look easy, which makes sense as they have the proper form down pat plus they are all in excellent shape.  I know they push themselves on their workouts, but in the back of my mind I've always thought it wasn't as hard for them because they are so fit.

I was wrong, and unlike the Fonz, I can admit when I'm wrong.

Our trainers usually get their workouts done in the morning, so I've rarely witnessed any of them in workout mode, but every once in a while life interferes and they need to do a make up session.  One time I saw trainer Jori doing her workout and I knew she was serious because she'd removed her signature necklace...plus she was not talking and joking around like she normally does - hey, just like me!  I can't do much more than attempt to keep breathing while I do my workout.
Jori and her necklace.  She is so sweet.  Plus she wears the cutest workout clothes - I want to copy everything she wears.

Last week while I was huffing and puffing through my workout, I realized that Brad was doing his own workout nearby.   My normal view of him is in demonstration mode, which is slow because he's showing us what to do.  But he was giving his maximum effort, and when we had finished and were laying on the floor in sweaty heaps doing our post-workout stretches, Brad came over and collapsed into the same sweaty heap.  It was an eye-opener to realize that this is hard for him, too.

I think I was deceived by this because of how simple and easy they make the exercises look.  It's the same as when I watch a certain runner from our group - he has an effortless glide to his run that makes it look like there's nothing to it.  I both admire and hate him for that, LOL.  Mostly I'm jealous because I'm not that kind of runner.

We are all at different levels of fitness; it has taken me a while to realize that just because I'm not able to lift as much as the person standing next to me doesn't mean that I'm not putting in the same amount of effort.  As long as I'm pushing myself to do what my trainers are asking of me, I'm good with my performance.  Also, I did burpees last week; real burpees, which I haven't attempted until now because of my calf injury.  The good news is that my calf didn't bother me with all of that jumping; the not-surprising news is that I still loathe burpees with the fire of a thousand burning suns.  But hey, I did them anyway.

  1. I'm convinced burpees are the devil's own tool.

It's timely that you wrote about this because just yesterday as I was doing a bootcamp and huffing and puffing and trying to decide if I should modify one move in particular, I had the thought wondering if it ever gets any easier. I mean,"they" say that if you keep at it, it gets easier but I'm beginning to think "they" are liar liar pants on fire people.

Big ups to you for keeping at it. One thing I know we agree on is we are not like the previous generations 50-something year olds so good for us.

    1. Yes on the burpees! And while I can see a little bit of progress with some of my moves, I agree with you that a lot don't seem to get much easier...

  2. My coach is so graceful and strong. She jumps onto the rope and slithers up it with ease. When she demos the bootcamp activities, it looks so simple. I can't even do a v-up. She works hard at it, tho because I see her posts on IG. I guess that's why they're the coaches and we're the students, right/

  3. We tend to always think it's easier for someone else. It's good to remember that everyone struggles.

  4. Its good to hear that the trainers work out as hard as you guys. And it made me laugh that you loath burpees with the fire of a thousand burning suns.

    1. I saw a video today of another group doing long jump burpees - what the fresh hell?? They must have been the advanced group, LOL.

  5. WTG on the burpees!!! I'm glad seeing your trainers workout made you think about how you are all putting in the same amount of effort. You might not be doing the same things, but your perceived level of exertion may be, and that's what matters - that you are working out at the right intensity for your body! :)

  6. Going hand in hand with this...years ago I was talking to my brother and mentioned being embarrassed because when I rode my bike or went to the gym I was ‘barely workinf’ In comparison to other people there. He told me ‘the people that you perceive as the ones that are in shape have more respect for you than anything’. He went on to say that they were working HARD to be in that position but more importantly they knew how hard you were working. He said ‘they know how it feels for them to work out with the extra ‘winter pounds’ so they actually feel nothing but respect for you because they know that you may be going slower and not as hard...but you are working just as hard if not harder than they are!

Your post just reminded me of those comments!

    1. I always knew I was giving it my all, but I finally got a heart rate monitor to wear during my workouts and yep, there was the proof...I AM working hard, even if it doesn't always look like it to the rest of the world.

  7. The best time to do burpees is in Neveruary. They are evil.
