WWU - When Your Trainer Turns 40

I can be a bit dense sometimes, which was the case last Thursday when I walked into the gym for my group workout.  They write the names of everyone having a birthday that week on the front door, and I saw Brad's name there and that he was turning 40.  Inside, there were all kinds of decorations with 40 on them - how festive, I thought.   We warmed up and then split into our small groups where we got our assignments, as I like to think of them.  First up was 40 calories on machines - you could switch off machines if you wanted, but you had to burn a total of 40 calories before moving on to the next spot, where you probably guessed it but I didn't, we had to do 40 reps of this and 40 reps of that...I swear, it took me until we were nearly finished to connect the dots with that one.  Reminds me of my dumb idea to run my age, only I don't think Brad had to do the workout - he's a smart one, he is.

Yesterday was more fun at the gym; one thing I'm learning is that my balance isn't great when we're doing one-legged things - I wobble a lot.  Luckily, I'm getting a lot of practice with improving my balance, so there's that, haha.  We got to put in requests for Thursday's workout so we'll see if mine is chosen - I picked the slidey thing, as I call it.  I believe the official name is the slide board and again, that is something that makes you work on balance as well as makes your outer leg muscles burn - win win, right?

********************

I haven't gotten to run in nearly a week because it just won't. stop. raining.  I think today is supposed to be the last day of rain for a while, and I hope so because I need a dry road to wear ::drum roll please:: my new old shoes!  Hoka brought back the original Clifton, which was the best shoe ever that they proceeded to make terrible with all of the subsequent models - I haven't bought a Clifton since they had the model 3, and they are on the model 5 now.  But for whatever reason (low sales, perhaps?) they offered the OG Clifton for sale and I bought a pair:
HELLO MY LOVELIES!

These are the shoes that made me fall in love with Hoka - super cushioned and flexible, plus the tongue is not padded, which feels so good on my left foot with the arthritic bone spur on top.  Anything that doesn't put pressure there is my ideal shoe, and these are perfect.

So I ordered the one pair, and everyone around me keeps asking why I didn't order more.  I might, but I hope that they get such a good response to this model that they make it in more colors and have it be a permanent part of the Hoka line.  I will definitely keep an ear to the ground - er, an eye on the internet - and if it looks like they are closing out this model again, I'll buy another pair for sure to have in reserve.

Now, if I can actually get to run in them...

  1. Your workouts at the gym sound fun...or as fun as going to the gym can be...haha. I like that they set a "plan" for you.

Yes, you should definitely stock up on those shoes if they are your fave!

  3. I have trouble with one legged exercises too--my coaches keep me working on my hips. I guess that's what will help....

    1. Hips, eh? They do have us doing hip hinge things and others that I can't remember what they're called. It's almost like these trainers know what they're doing... ;)

  4. I don't like the padded tongue in my Mizunos for the same reason. Ouch. Your Hokas are such a pretty color!

  5. You're not alone, we all seem to have one side that is just more wobbly than the other. I think this is something that gets worse as we age. Well, it's gotten worse for me, for sure!

Here's to dry, clear skies so you can break in your new Hokas!

  6. Aww, what a fun idea for his birthday workout! I hope your workout gets picked! I wish we had sliders :)

I hope they keep the original Clifton around too for you. That is a promising sign that they brought it back!

  7. Great ideas. I need to remember this idea.

I hate when they change running shoes. This happened with my NIKE Vomero 10s. I hated the 11s and so did everyone else I think because now for the 12, 13, they are back to the style I love.

    1. How lucky that Nike changed back to the good style - I just do not get it. Shoe is a big seller so they MUST NEED TO IMPROVE IT? No, no they don't.

    1. I am too! Of course I don't want to get them muddy on their first run - hopefully things will dry out by Saturday.

  9. The rain does need to stop for you!!! Not just for the shoes...(although that’s top of the list) but because you need some sun!!!!

    I love the 40 workout!!!

  10. I'm really wobbly on my left side. After I had that herniated disk, the nerves in my left leg never quite recovered and I have about 15% weakness in my thigh muscles. That's why I stopped doing squats with a barbell - afraid it was just going to slide off one side. Does your gym have a bosu ball for balance? Those are great for that.
