WWU - Cows and Dogs and Babies, Oh My!

Considering that we run in horrid conditions - for example, yesterday the temperature was 75 degrees, with the dew point at 74 and humidity at 98%, which means that you're basically trying to outrun being drowned in sweat - we are still running, so I'm giving myself and my fellow Renegades a gold star for that.  I'm sure you guys are tired of reading about how gross running is during the hot Texas months, and you know what?  I'm tired of it too.  So I'll try to not mention weather until we get a cool front - which might not be until end of October - and you can just assume that I'm trying not to die of sweat and heat.

That said, I have been enjoying running more lately.  Don't get me wrong, it's still incredibly taxing compared to cold weather running, but it's been nice.  We discovered a new road behind the subdivision behind my subdivision - so is that three degrees of subdivision? - which has been fun to run on.  The first time we ran it, it was still pretty dark and things are scarier in the dark than when it's light, that's a known fact.  As we ran, up ahead there was a low area that had a layer of fog, and I saw a large dog, so naturally I stopped to warn Jeff and Diane because the last thing you want is to run up on a large dog in the dark, right?  Well it turns out it wasn't a dog but rather a baby cow.  And a mama cow, and another mama and baby cow.  BABY COWS ARE THE SAME SIZE AS A LARGE DOG AND I STAND BY MY WARNING.  Jeff and Diane immediately realized that the large dog was a cow and I still haven't heard the end of it, but I was just trying to protect my running buddies!

Anyway, we've run the cowdog route a couple more times but haven't come across any cows masquerading as large dogs, which is good.  You can bet that I'm on the lookout, though!

After Logan's dad finished running, he parked the stroller with a sleeping baby on the driveway:
Awww!

About a minute later Logan woke up, so I went to unlatch him and sat him on my lap.  That sweet baby put his arm on my shoulder and was patting it while smiling at me.  There's nothing like having a baby like you - the rest of the world can be crummy, but that baby is smiling and patting me, so it's all good.

His mom had been away for a couple of weeks learning how to train a facility dog for her work, and brought out Sawyer for all of us to meet.  Naturally Sawyer is excellent with children, and it was neat to see how calm and patient he was with Logan:
'Scuse me doggie, I just need some help in standing.
This is Logan's latest feat - standing alone - and when he did it, we all cheered and clapped!

Then he started standing like it was no big deal...
Although when it was time for his bottle, he needed both hands for that, so dad had to hold his shirt to keep him from toppling backward.

Eventually we adjourned to Blue Baker, where we discovered that someone had taken the loaf of ciabatta bread that our baker had set out for us!  Who does that - just take a loaf of bread off of a table?  They knew they hadn't paid for it.  That was odd.  The bakers told us what had happened and found a couple of smaller loaves for us which was super nice and seriously, we don't go there just because they have a treat waiting for us, but they do treat us very well, I will say.

  1. In spite of your bread being stolen (who does that?) Looking at those baby pictures of Logan is such a joy and gives me hope that the world and people aren't quite as rotten as it sometimes seems. Thanks for the smile today! I am off shortly for the yearly breast squish aka mammogram.

  2. Cow spotting is very serious! I still stand by my statement that some squirrels were thinking about attacking me during one run!!! So keep your eyes peeled for those cows!!!

  3. How funny about the cow dogs! That is a nice looking Lab. I’m curious about what it is being trained for. Logan is so cute, being excited about standing up.

    1. The dog will help children at a child advocacy center.

  4. Unless people actually run in the dark, they don't understand how a cow could look like a dog. I stand with you!!

I hope whomever took that bread actually needed it, because seriously who does that?!

    1. Haha, thank you! Darkness makes a lot of things look ominous, right?

  5. Here's a blanket, empathetic "oooh, icky" for your ridiculous running weather, which will last until you get an "aaahhh, that's better" in October. I do not envy you Texas runners, but I do admire your dedication! As for the cow/dog, I did something similar when I was visiting in-laws in Eastern Washington not very long after moving from the Chicago area. I saw a shape crossing some railroad tracks in the distance and yelled "BEAR!" Yeah, it was a cow, too. Never lived it down. Thank goodness I divorced that husband so I can put the embarrassment behind me!

    1. Thank you for the blanket weather statement, LOL! And hey, there was probably as likely a chance of it being a bear as a cow crossing tracks, so you weren't wrong to shout a warning. Also, I thought that they use metal cattle guards, which look similar to railroad tracks, to deter cows from crossing land, so really, why would a cow be crossing the railroad tracks? Bear made more sense.

  6. Logan with Sawyer = Best Pic Ever!

So was that small cow in the road? I wonder what it was doing near a subdivision? Or am I reading that wrong?

    1. I know, I loved that shot of Logan with Sawyer too. :)

The cows are on land that is just across the street from the new houses that are being built - pastureland that has been parceled off and sold. So yes, they were in a (new) subdivision.

  7. Baby cow, large dog - it's all the same when running in the dark!

  8. Seriously, who steals bread? Unless....it was the cow dog?

  9. Ha ha ha, I am dying about the cow dog. Don't feel bad - I often think far away mailboxes are cyclists!

And continue to talk about the heat. It's your blog - talk about what you want!

Gah, the bread thief. WTF, folks.
