FMM - Art

Reader Susan, fellow sufferer of heat and humidity because she lives in Florida (I feel your pain, Susan), asked for some close up shots of the large painting we moved to our entry area.  Happy to oblige - it's interesting and depending on what color the wall is painted, different colors pop.

Backstory is that my Grandmother bought this back in the early 70s - the artist is Helen Lake Smith, and other than the fact that my Grandmother was living in southern California when she bought it, we really don't know anything more about the painting or the artist.  And that's a shame as I like to know a little background about an original art piece and the artist who created it.  There's no title to this piece, but I've always called it the fork painting, because, well, you'll see:
See how it looks like a fork was dragged through the paint?
Also, not to state the obvious, but this looks like a fork to me.
My brother saw a snake in it, which I never connected, but there you go - everyone can see something different in abstract art.

There was a gathering of Mini cars on Wednesday at the museum where my parents volunteer.  They sent me several pictures, but the cutest was this:
A Mini police car!  It's the K-9 unit, which ups the awww factor even more.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Fork painting is a really good name for the piece of art!

Better not say ‘awww’ too much...Paco might get jealous!

    1. Can you imagine seeing this painting hanging in an art gallery, going up to the little card beside it, and seeing "Fork" as the title? LOLOL

  2. Thanks for posting the pictures of your grandmothers painting for us too see up close it is a very interesting painting for sure.

I too think of you when I see Mini Coops. You know those little Fiats look a lot like your coops and fool me sometimes. LOL

    1. You're welcome! The Fiats used to fool me until I became a Mini owner. Now I have no trouble telling the difference.

  3. Ooo, thanks for the close ups! I like your title for it. And I can totally see it looking different depending on the lighting and what colors it's placed against (or around it!).

    Aww, totally cute!!!

  4. That painting has so many interesting variations in it. I can see your fork, and I raise you the woman's head I see laying sideways on the bottom left.

I can't believe that mini cooper is used as a real police car - too funny!

  5. Mini cooper canine unit? I almost want to become a policewoman :)

Its so interesting that you said the painting looked different depending on its surroundings. Because when you showed it in this post, I was SURE it looked completely different in the photo you showed on Monday. So I went back and looked. Yes its the same, but I just saw it differently!

    1. I know, can't you just picture yourself driving around in that cute Mini police car, dog by your side? I'd want to do it just for public relations, though - no bad guy interaction, please.

Funny that you thought the painting was different from Monday to today. Art...it really is so interesting!

  6. I love the fact that it was your dear Grandmother's. She even picks Shelley-like colors.
Does it have a distinct top and bottom to you? Maybe bc of how your Gma always had it.
And I suppose the way it's wired to hang in the back. It sort of seems like the kidadults could rotate it every time they're home (to tease Ma) and it would still be fine. C.

    1. Technically it could be rotated (barring the hanging wire), but I don't think I could handle looking at it from a different angle. ACK. Now you've put that in my head!

  7. That painting is really amazing! One thing about art, it's worth is always in the person who owns it and the value they put on it. In that last picture of the painting, I see two rose blooms.

  8. I agree with Wendy, I too think of you whenever I see a mini. There is someone down the road from me that has a mini convertible and her license plate says H20Nut...haha
