WWU - Back to Running

My first run after getting sick at the Houston half marathon was a week and half later, on last Wednesday.  Jeff, Diane, and I set out for a whole 2 miles early in the morning, and I have to say, it felt great!  I guess having so much time off due to being sick let my legs recover; I had so much energy that it was one of those runs that make you remember why you like running.

My next run was on Sunday morning, because it was raining on Saturday morning, and while it wasn't coming down hard, Jeff and I (and Diane) decided we didn't need to have a rain run, so we just met the group at Blue Baker for breakfast.  The next morning, it was dry and cool, so we set out on a 5 mile route.  That run was a bit more challenging than the one on Wednesday, but it was a good distance to run because any farther and I think we'd all have been full of regret.  None of us are back to feeling 100% with our stomachs, and having any twinge of stomach tightening during that run brought flashbacks to the craziest race ever, so we tried to take it easy.  One interesting thing about running on a Sunday versus a Saturday was how quiet it was - and we started an hour later than we normally do!  Much less traffic on the roads made for a very peaceful run.

I ran yesterday, again just 2 miles, but again, it felt good.  It was crisp and cold, 36 degrees with a feels like of 32, but I am nailing my cold weather dressing this year and was comfortable - it's so nice to not be too cold, or be overdressed and have to start shedding layers.  After nine years of running, I'm finally good at dressing for it, haha.

Speaking of Blue Baker, I brought Mason some little toy cars from the Chevron booth at the race expo, and it was so cute to watch him play with one - his mama would zoom it and he'd just laugh and laugh!  I took a few pictures and they're all a little blurry because he was moving so much, but his smile is adorable:

CC says that he loves cars and trucks, and even tucks some away in hiding spots on their bookcases.  So cute!

I have no idea what we'll be running this Saturday - so far, the longest distance race I am signed up for is a 5 miler in March.  But Cary, Julia, and Diane signed up for the inaugural Silos half marathon, which will be in May, so they might need to run farther.  Karen and I signed up for the 5K that day - it'll be fun to participate in the new race and we'll get to watch Chip Gaines (of Fixer Upper) cross the finish line for his first marathon.  Other than that, we mostly have some local 5K races this spring - we might do the Cap10K in Austin again in April, depending on finances - but before we know it, racing season in Texas will be over (it's short because it gets too hot so quickly).

Glad you're feeling better, but be sure not to over do it.

  2. Glad you're getting back in your running groove. Good for you guys for waiting to run in better weather! More flexibility is one of the nicest things about not training for really long distances. Honestly you could do all the races you have planned running 5 miles or less for your long runs.

What a cutie pie Mason is! It's fun to watch "your" babies growing up.

    1. Yep, I'm all about the flexibility - if one day of the weekend has better, I'd much rather wait and not suffer.

I'm glad you're enjoying watching our Renegade babies - they are both so sweet!

  3. Isn't it amazing when you take time off from running and head out on rested legs? I love those runs! Glad you're recovered and back at it.

    1. Apparently I don't do that whole "rested leg" thing often enough to notice it like I did!

  6. So the Silos half marathon, is that any connection to the Silos of Chip and Joanna? Is that where you will be watching Chip race? If so that is so cool.

Oh and my favorite distance for a training run is the 2 mile loop, haha. You guys rock for getting out and doing 5 miles already. I admit I haven't done 5 miles since October!

    1. Yes, that's the same Silos! Chip and Joanna are putting on the race and I suspect it's going to be excellent!

  7. Good for you on running the shorter races which will make you happy. I would have FOMO if others were running the half.

Running on rested legs is the best medicine. I didn't run for several days last week which allowed me to put in the extra miles over the weekend.

    1. You know, I really don't think I'll have FOMO - I really am over running that far.

  8. Sunday mornings are the best for exercising. My favorite bike ride of the week is always Sunday morning for our breakfast ride. We leave the house around 7 am and no traffic and no people.

It's weird hearing you write about soon getting too hot for running as we sit here in 22 degree weather LOL

  9. Mason is so adorable! And is it just me or is he growing so fast?!

I am glad you had some good runs post Houston! Whenever I run on Sundays, I LOVE how much quieter and peaceful the roads are!
