Wednesday Workout Update

I really don't have much to report this week - I feel like a broken record saying it's hot and humid, so I won't say that.  ::whispers::  But it is.  Anyway, I ran with Cary on Saturday; we did three miles and what you should be impressed with by that is the fact that she's in her third trimester, pregnant during a Texas summer, and she's still running.  I wasn't a runner when I was pregnant, but I did have a summer baby in southern California and that was rough - Texas summers are much worse, so kudos to Cary for staying so active.

So we ran, and then I ran again with Jeff yesterday.  I had to laugh when I realized that my total mileage for the week was what Diane and I were running on a single weekday during the height of her marathon training...but hey, that's why it's called the off season, right?

After my run yesterday, I needed to stretch out my muscles, which aren't sore from running but from sitting and knitting so much.  Luckily I'm on the tail end of my knitting push and won't be sitting quite so much soon.  I probably could avoid some of this if I'd just make myself get up and stretch every hour, but when I'm in the groove of knitting, nothing can stop me.  Well, except when Paco needs to go outside.  And when I'm thirsty.  And then when all the water I drank runs through me.  But other than that, nothing can keep me from my knitting!  Wait, where was I going with this?  Oh yeah, stretching.  Which is what I did after my run yesterday - I started with my wall stretch:
Legs up!

Which led to a worried Paco hovering over me:
Why yu on de floor?  Do I need to get help??

Then, once I was finished with the wall stretch, I did a few yoga moves since I was already on the floor - child's pose, cat and cow, and then I did a quick plank.  This always feels so good and honestly I don't know why I don't do this every time I run...except that I forget about it in my hurry to get out of my sweaty clothes.

As far as other exercise, we bought a dog Frisbee for Paco - it's made from a soft gel, in case he ever decides to catch it in his mouth.  So far he's just having fun letting us throw it, watching it land, and then he'll bring it back to us and play tug-of-war with it.  We let him get his chasing after the Frisbee out of his system first, and then Jeff and I can toss our Frisbee without Paco trying to get it.  We are getting better, and it's a fun thing to do in the evening before the mosquitoes come out.

  1. I do think maybe yoga would help me with my achiness and have been meaning to look up some moves on YouTube or something.

I am always impressed with pregnant runners. I know I've gotten passed by quite a few during races and that is quite humbling to say the least. Kudos to them.

    1. I've been passed by a pregnant woman pushing a toddler in a stroller - humbling, indeed!

  2. I'm not sure I'd have even wanted to run in my third trimester (if I had been a runner back then)! Kudos indeed.

Don't feel bad about not fully stretching - lots of us are guilty of that. At my new gym, they even have all the bands and foam rollers, etc. right there and yet as soon as I finish my workout, I head out the door without so much as a glance at them.

We are in the midst of TX heat and humidity this week - 74 degrees this morning when I went out. My runs have turned into wogs for sure but I am just giving myself credit for going out. The worst part is trying to get ready for work in a house with no central a/c. Even though I blow a fan directly on me, I feel like my makeup is melting off faster than I can apply it!

    1. Cracking up that even you walk right past the stretching equipment.

Ugh to your TX heat with no A/C - even WITH the A/C, it takes me close to an hour to really stop sweating, and the days when I'm rushed to run, shower, and dress for my volunteer job, I am a mess.

  3. Once Cocoa is better, I'm going to look for that Frisbee for her. She loves to play fetch!

  4. Yup. Love an off-season.

Heat is tough for the non-pregnant runner!!

    1. You are not kidding, but when I run with Cary, I can't complain. Now, when I run with non-pregnant friends? I don't hold back!

  5. Ugh to the live sucking humidity (that is all!). Ours dogs can't say the letter "f" so my caption would be "Why yu on the ploor?" LOL!! "Where's my pood?" Paco is adorable.

  6. I don't think I could run pregnant. Especially in the third trimester. So way to go!

I've been doing yoga on YouTube. I'm really liking Yoga with Adriene. You should look it up.

    1. I'll look it up, but I'm pretty bad when it comes to doing at home workouts.

  7. Well I think you helped me to solve a riddle. My hamstrings have been extremely tight. I tried to figure out what I had changed in my exercise routine that would have caused that. Now I'm pretty sure it's the increased sitting I've been doing...

    1. It's a pretty sad day when SITTING can cause that much muscle pain, but yep.

  8. I'm so guilty about not stretching as well. You're right - it feels so good, so why don't we look forward to it and do it?? Maybe the shower feels better LOL
