Halloween Throwback

Happy Halloween!  It's the second-best day of the year in most kid's lives - getting to dress up and ask for and receive free candy?  What could be better, except for that whole presents thing in December.  But you have to be good for that, while Halloween means just being a kid and still getting rewarded...ahh, fun times.

Anyway, I'm enjoying some candy corn while I blog:
I'm counting this as a victory - only two bags of candy corn purchased for the entire month of October.

I scanned in some old Halloween pictures, mostly for my amusement but you might find them entertaining, too.  First, we'll go back to the dark ages, when color pictures looked like Instagram pictures today.

The year?  1967.  The place?  Half Moon Bay, California.  I was four years old and determined to carry my own carefully chosen pumpkin:
With our next-door neighbors, Frank and one of his older sisters.  Love how she multi-tasked by carrying her pumpkin along with her pocketbook.

Now we jump ahead in time to the year 1991.  Still in California, but this was in El Toro, at our first house.  We have four and a half year old Sam here, drawing a face on his pumpkin:
I actually still have those chairs, although they've been painted many different colors.  They're in the attic, just in case we need extra seating.  Probably will let them go next time we move...

I love this picture:
Looking at pumpkin guts - cool!  Not-yet-Allie was two years old here.

I couldn't get my hands on most of my Halloween pictures - side note, I really need for my mother to come visit and help me organize my photos into albums (and by help me I mean do it for me), but I did find this cute pirate:
Yaaar, matey!  Sam, 1991.

Now we move onto where I can't quite pinpoint the year - this was in San Antonio, so somewhere between 1992 and 2000.  When did they both take karate?  This warrants further investigation, but suffice it to say that their costumes were easy that year, as they just wore their uniforms along with some nunchucks and ninja stars:
Ka-POW!  Sam and Allie-before-she-was-Allie.

One last picture - again, why would you purposely make your pictures look like this on Instagram?  I have lots of photos colored just like this:
1974 - I was eleven and my brother was 8 years old.  He was a tramp just about every year - what could be easier than putting on one of our Dad's old shirts, stuffing it with a pillow, and dirtying up your face with a charcoal briquette?

Too bad you can't see my costume very well - it was a full-fledged dress with a bustle, sewn by my mom.  That year, I was really into reading biographies about Dolly Madison, Abigail Adams, and other influential women, and I wanted a dress like what they wore, so she obliged me.  It was so pretty and I think I even wore it for some school plays that we put on in fifth and sixth grade.

Hope you have a great Halloween and see lots of cute trick-or-treaters at your doorway tonight.  Be sure and save a fun-sized Snickers for me!

    1. I love it! I couldn't find the picture of Sam as a robot, with a cardboard box body and dryer vent arms, all spray-painted silver, of course. It was pretty cool.

  4. Fun photos! I have no idea where all the photos of my brother and me are - maybe at mom's in a box? One of my favorite costumes was when I was an American Indian princess. Pretty sure that wouldn't be PC nowadays lol!

    1. I look back at some of my costumes as a teenager (parties, not trick or treating) and think "nope - they wouldn't fly in today's times" - geisha in a real Japanese kimono that was a gift from our exchange student, and yes, Indian princess (wearing a borrowed Camp Fire Girls outfit...wonder if they've changed out that one?). But it was all in innocent fun back then.

  7. I love your stroll down memory lane. Yeah, I'm like you -- why would anyone want to use a filter to make pictures look old?

  10. Aww, I love seeing all the pics! Costume pics are so fun. And very good point re: the instagram filters. Why do people want their pics to look that way?!

Do you ever mix candy corn with peanuts?! OMG SO GOOD. I finally found a vegan candy corn this year and I was so excited! I forgot to get some for Halloween though.

And you are so cute! Hee
I could use your Mom's help with photos too, if she feels like Pennsylvania. Ha
