Wednesday Workout Update

It's been a while since I've done a true WWU - a peek into a week of workouts - well, pretty much running at this point, but still.  Back in the day, I used to be more diverse with my exercise but the important thing to remember here is that I am continuing to exercise regularly, and that's not something I could say 10 years ago.

Anyway, things are getting back to normal for me, what with traveling, then being sick, and then just plain being sick of running in the (still) 100% humidity.  I swear, in years past, the humidity levels would vary from 88% to 94% during the summer, but it's been a solid 100% all dang summer long, and I am over it.  Luckily for my mental state, a little cold front started coming in on Monday, which has us seeing morning temps in the mid-60s, ahhhh!

We had another hot run on Saturday - I set out intending to do five miles, but ended up only doing four.  It's all good; there's no rush on getting in the distance right now, so I'm happy with this.  Diane was out of town so Julia and I ended up running together - we did intervals and caught up on life which made the time go by fast.  When we got back to the RRC clubhouse, Karen had an experimental treat waiting for us - frozen pickle pops!  They look like an Otter Pop, but are sour and tangy like a dill pickle.

Pickle Pops - I'm a fan!

We all pretty much had the same initial reaction to our first taste - scrunched up faces.  But, the more we tried them, the more we all liked them, except for Jeff.  He had one taste and that was enough.  The pickle pops really hit the spot after our sweaty run; they were salty and refreshing.  We're going to buy some to have on hand at the RRC clubhouse for after our long runs, and I think I'll go ahead and get some for home...anything to help avoid cramping up after the sweatfest I call running is good!

The only odd thing for me was that about an hour after I'd finished running, when we were at Blue Baker for breakfast, I was really hot.  Jeff was sitting next to me and said he could feel the heat radiating off of my body - not sure if that is connected to the previous Saturday when I got overheated, or what.  At least I didn't get a headache, so I just had several cups of ice water and that seemed to help.

Monday, I ran with Diane.  It was another warm run - 73 degrees, 97% humidity.  We ran our two miles pretty quickly for the heat, which was a surprise.  On tap is another run with her today (I might already be finished with it by the time you read this) and hopefully a run tomorrow.  Then, according to the extended weather forecast that I have been slightly obsessing over, we might do our Saturday run in 59 degrees!  I hope this forecast comes true - where is my Fairy Godmother when I need her?!  I'm hoping to do 6.2 miles then...I haven't run that far in a long time, but if the weather really cools down I might just make it.

  1. I have friends who swear by pickle juice! I've never heard of pickle pops, but I see the appeal. That Texas heat and humidity is no joke! Whew!

  2. Now I can get behind some frozen pickle juice!! I might have to invest in some next summer. We have already hit a cooling down phase so no more hot days. I hope your forecast stays true for Saturday!!

  3. OK, those pickle pops sound DELICIOUS. What a great way to replenish salts. Plus there's a home remedy that if you get a charlie horse, you're supposed to take a shot of pickle juice and it supposedly calms them right down. My only issue is that I tend to get them in the middle of the night and don't really feel like going down to the kitchen to get pickle juice lol.

I am a firm believer in running (pace and miles) according to perceived exertion in hot weather - good for you for doing just that!

  6. That would be so great if you could finally run again in some decent weather. If anyone deserves that it's you!

Never seen those pickle pops here. We do have those pops here but that's just sweet water icecream.

    Enjoy your run next Saturday.
