Happy Labor Day!
Today is Labor Day in the United States, which, along with honoring the American worker, used to signify the end of summer/beginning of school, back when I was a child living in California. But here in Texas, school began two weeks ago, and let's face it, we're nowhere near being done with the summer heat. But we still get to enjoy a three-day weekend (hey kids - here's a holiday just two weeks into your school year!), and that's always a good thing - we'll be grilling something yummy, and I know for a fact Jeff will be getting some hammock time. I know a lot of states have mandated a certain number of days the kids must be in school and I believe this is the attempt to satisfy that, but I'm on the side of start later and do away with having a vacation in February and April. How about just one vacation in March?
ReplyDeleteThe poor kids in my area started this past Tuesday or Wednesday (yep, 3-4 days before Labor Day) and some of the school systems held only half days. This whole thing is so dumb.
I remember as a kid in Alabama we didn't start the school season until after Labor Day weekend. Now they have them in school a week into August. But in Utah they have a week off nearly every month they are in school plus their once a week half day for school administration training. No wonder the kids have 2 to 3 hours of homework every night.

I hated going to school August! Thankfully the school I teach at usually doesn't go back till September 1. This year we went on Aug 30 but we only went for 3 days and then had off Friday, Sat, Sun, and Monday so I can't complain. it will feel like forever though until our next break in November! Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteI'm still always surprised when I hear that kids are starting school in August. That would have been very upsetting to me as a kid.
ReplyDeleteAs an adult, and a nurse, it was just another day that I worked. I don't even think it was one of our paid holidays, so no time and a half pay. But even now, I am so used to NOT celebrating holidays, I am always surprised when someone asks "what are you doing for such and such holiday?"

ReplyDeleteThat's funny. Here in Holland Summer school holiday is 6 weeks. To spread the traffic a little the country is divided in 3 parts. The first part gets holiday beginning of July and have to go back to school. The last part doesn't go back to school until the first week of September.
ReplyDeleteThen the kids have a week in October, 2 weeks around Christmas/New Year, 1 week in February and 2 weeks in May and then it starts all over again.
Oh I'd wish I was back at school, all those free days :)
West Cliff is a beautiful run! I would do it every day of my life if I lived there. I did a couple of 7 mile runs along that coast. I also did some barefoot beach running which feels incredible. Do you come here often? We usually spend a couple weeks there a year. My husband is from that area so it's his playground. :-)
