WWU - Race Pictures!

I finally have a few race pictures from the Republic of Texas Quarter Marathon to show you.  As it turns out, one of the photographers on the course was from our local newspaper; fellow Renegade Karen alerted me to this, so I clicked on the link and one-by-one, viewed the pictures, looking for my friends and I.  Pretty quick, I found one of me:
Just call me the (wo)man in black...

And then, I found an amazing picture of Brian, running in front of Kyle Field (the football stadium).  And I thought, huh, why was Brian running in front of Kyle Field?  I thought he was doing the same distance as me.  I didn't run in front of Kyle Field.  Here's the picture:
Fantastic shot, right?

I kept clicking through the photos, and suddenly, there I was, in front of Kyle Field.  Y'all, I have no recollection of this, and had you asked me, I would have sworn we didn't go that direction:
Well, what do you know?  There I am!

Here's Jeff in that same location:
Wearing his lucky race hat...

Later on, the official race pictures were posted.  This one came out blurry, and it's too bad, because the backstory is that the flag guy and I played leapfrog throughout the race, and I happened to be passing him as we made a turn, and we were both laughing because he said he was lost and would be relying on me to lead him...I told him I had no idea where I was going either:
Nice to have this fun memory captured.

Just a few seconds later:
I really like this shot!

It took a while, but it's nice to actually have some pictures from this race.  And it's also nice to see where I ran, because clearly my brain was elsewhere!

  1. Race brain can make you forget what you ran by. I distinctly remember during my second Marine Corps, I kept trying to remember if I'd run by the Lincoln Memorial yet. It was a blur lol.

I love that last photo with you in focus and the flag guy behind. Have to say, I admire him for carrying a flag, I would think his shoulder would be really tired at the end of the race.

    1. Race brain - glad I'm not the only one who suffers from it. That's funny about the Lincoln Memorial...like, how could you miss it? But I totally get it.

There are always quite a few flag runners at the races here in Texas (must be the strong military presence?). I'm amazed they can run with the flag; sometimes I can barely hold my water bottle by the end of a race!

  2. Ha! Too funny you don't remember running there!

I love that your laugh with flag guy was captured! :) I had a very special moment with a random Paris dude at the end of the NYC Marathon and was so happy it was captured in the official pics!

    1. It's funny how you bond with a stranger for so many miles during a race and then rarely see them again (although in our small town, I have run into those strangers at other races) - I really was happy to see those pictures with flag guy.

  3. Really love the race pictures and your smile is priceless!

I think you will be interested to know that I have/am ordering toothpick needles online to knit my first pair of socks. I feel as though I am ready to tackle socks now wish me luck! Did you buy any sock making books? Or did you just knit your socks from a pattern online and supplement with YouTube videos?

    1. Yay Susan!! I knitted my socks with online patterns and the You Tube videos that I linked in the sock post, mostly, but I already owned Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's Knitting Rules! book which has a great chapter on sock knitting (albeit from the cuff-down), and that helped me to understand sock knitting in general (plus have a relaxed attitude about it, thanks to Steph's demeanor). I hope you enjoy your first pair of socks!!

    1. Haha, that would have been great - at least they were in the online edition, which is what I read, anyway.

  5. Those are some great pix! Sometimes when I run a race, I don't remember passing certain landmarks. Last year when I ran the Chicago marathon, I did my darndest to remember as much as I could for my recap, knowing that it was probably the last time I run it.

    1. Really, trying to be aware of your surroundings during a race is a great distraction - I (obviously) need to try that, LOL!

  7. That's funny that you didn't remember going by that building! I am always amazed at people that carry around stuff or race in costume. I remember a Halloween race where someone was dressed as a werewolf and had a full head mask on, plus running in jeans and workboots. I don't know how he did it.

    1. Yeah, there's no way I could run in a costume like that.

  8. Great photos! You look like you're having so much fun!

One of the first races I ran in Chicago goes by the Sears Tower. When I posted pictures from the race on Facebook later that day, including one of the Sears Tower, my friend who I ran with had the same kind of memory lapse - she had no idea we ran by it! I mean it's only a 1,400 foot tall building, easy to miss ;)

    1. I swear, it's weird where your brain goes when racing. Too funny about your friend missing the Sears Tower!

  10. That's funny about not remembering that big building! And the pic with the flag guy is priceless. Didn't you say that it was always confusing to you when you ran on campus? You were probably so intent on staying on the right path that you didn't notice large buildings around you :)

    1. I definitely was confused - plus all of a sudden there was a large group of people just ahead of us, and I thought I needed to go there until I realized that they didn't have race bibs...just a busload of potential students touring the campus.
