Wednesday Workout Update

November was a huge running mileage month for me, which makes sense since we hit the big miles in our long runs.  Still, I did a double-take when I added up the miles, and I had to do it again to be sure I was right, because DANG.  I've never run this many miles in one month.  I'm proud and impressed with myself, quite honestly!  This is a personal record for number of miles run in a month that will probably stand for quite a while with me, so I feel the need to shout it from the rooftops...or at least, shout it out to Blogland.  Bonus is that I'm still standing and feeling good!  Score one for having a healthy training season...I think I was due.

Last week ended up being a little crazy in terms of running, but it was a lot of fun, and a great reminder of why I do this.  I started out on Monday with a 35 minute run - Jeff's foot was hurting, so he opted to rest, but Julia and I had a surprisingly good run, considering we were coming off of that 12 miler just two days before.  As it turned out, 35 minutes (2.5 miles) was not long enough for us to finish talking, so we ended up walking for another mile.

Then on Wednesday, Julia and I tag-teamed a run with Cary - she was going out of town for Thanksgiving and wanted to get her 8 mile run in before she left, but of course, wasn't looking forward to doing it by herself.  So, I started out the run with her, and when we reached a pre-designated spot, Julia was there to continue while I walked back to my car.  I ran 4.5 miles, which was a lot for me on a weekday, but I felt great - plus I was really happy to have helped Cary, especially after all she did for me during that 12 miler.

The following day was the Turkey Trot 5K - I wondered how I'd do, considering the 4.5 miles the day before.  Well, you know the answer to that!  My calves were a little tender the day after that race, but I figured that was more from the hilly course than anything else.

Then came Saturday and our 8 mile run.  I went into it with 10 miles on my legs, and the weather was about 15 degrees warmer than it had been for my runs earlier in the week; while 55 degrees is nice, I know that I do pretty good with temps in the low 40s/high 30s.  I set out to just get the run in; no pushing it - now is NOT the time to tempt fate and do anything that might result in an injury.  I thought I'd be alone, but Julia surprised me by running with me - hurray!  We had a great run...my best 8 miles ever this season!  I felt so good the entire time, and the 8 miles literally flew by.  Love it when a run goes like that!  It was so nice to have a good long run, especially this close to the half marathon.

I'm on the downhill slide to the race and my running feels great.  I can't ask for more!

Sad news - our friend Biz lost her husband yesterday.  Here's a link to her blog...I know she would appreciate a kind note of support.  Most of us here in Blogland only know each other in the virtual sense, but we are a close-knit group, and hurt for her as she deals with this unexpected blow.

  1. I have read Biz' FB message this morning, my heart breaks for her.

Girl, you are so so ready for this race. This training season has been your best yet if you ask me. You trained wisely and that paid off. You probably can't wait till race day but neither can I because I'm so excited for you and can't wait to hear how it went.

  2. I'm really impressed with all your miles in November! Just Wow! I'm glad your training is going well and you have remained injury free. You have such a great support system in place I think that must really help with the mental part of running long distances which can be so hard.
I have cut back on my cardio some down to just a couple of miles 5x a week plus I lift weights a couple of times a week too.
It really is sad news about Biz's husband passing at least he's not suffering any more still so sad for her though.

    1. Yes, having someone along for the long run REALLY helps me in getting through it; or rather, talking myself out of not getting through it...

  3. You were overdue for a good training season - I'm so glad this one has been just that for you! Aren't you just amazed at what your body is capable of. I know for myself it's easy to get in a rut and not push at all and then I do push and think why don't I do that more often? Congratulations on your milestone month!

  4. It took me a while to see the mileage you had run (RBC--reading before coffee) That is super-fantastic! But the best part is that you are injury free! And the other best part is all the examples of friendship.
