Wednesday Workout Update - Indignant Edition

Public Service Announcement:  Don't mess with runners.  Especially a group of them.  We will cut you.  Take you DOWN.  Make you rue the moment you spouted off some asinine remark.

Or, we might just yell back, but that's mostly because we'd already gotten our run in and couldn't be bothered to give chase.

Backstory is that Andi, Julia, Cary, Karen and I were standing around after our run on Saturday morning - we'd gone anywhere from 3 to 4.5 miles, and were waiting for one more runner, who was doing 7 miles, to come in.  A man on a bicycle rode by and yelled "you're not burning calories just standing there!"  OH NO HE DIDN'T.  Immediately and in unison, we all yelled "WE'RE FINISHED!"  Of course he was such a chicken that he sped off...I'm telling you, we five women were FIRED UP and ready to, well, I don't exactly know.  Burn some more calories by throwing a few punches?  Haha, probably not, although at the time it sounded good.

I've been lucky in that I've never gotten harassed or yelled at during a run.  I know that it's happened to some of my readers.  Why in the world do people think this is OK?  I do not get it.

Also, FYI bike jerk, I don't run to burn calories.  I run for fun, for exercise, and because I feel good about myself for doing it.  Not everything is done to lose weight or, despite what YOU might suppose, looking good for men on bikes.  Sheesh!

  2. Well you know I've had my fair share of being called a fat ass... usually by a moron in a car who is also smoking a cigarette and eating a Big Mac ;)

That bike is lucky you guys didn't run after him and take him down lol!

  3. Next time bring a stick, you can put it in his wheels as he passes you and falls on his ugly face and maybe hurts his ugly mouth.

Why are people so rude? I have a saying: If you can't say nothing nice, just say nothing at all. I'm using that in real life but also on the internet. That's even worse than real life, people think they can say anything behind the anonimity of a computer.

Did you have a good fun run besides the a**hole?

  4. Wow, that kind of thing really burns me up. Its been a long time since anything like that happened to me. I'm not sure I'd have been as fast with a comeback as you guys were. Good job!

  5. I was so hoping the end of your story would be "so we all took off running after him and when we caught up to him we made his next 5 minutes pure hell. We all talked at once, wagging our fingers at him and berating him for his stupid comment, until he finally started crying and begged us all to leave him alone, which we did after we made him apologize and address us as Queen Runners of the Road." But your ending was probably the better move. :)

  6. I'm liking Jills ending a lot!

But what an ass! Whether you hadn't started yet or finished or whatever, your "just standing there" in fitness clothes clearly meant you were getting out there being active. You gotta wonder about somebody who rides around provoking people without thinking, 'cause you KNOW that's gonna backfire on him bigtime someday!

  7. I don't know why idiots like that say what they say, but they're cowards. They would never walk up to you and make their comment, it is always while they are driving (or biking) by. At one time, a hateful remark would bring me to tears...and try to run while you are crying! It doesn't work! Now, I've learned to just smile and wave and keep on my merry way!

  9. Okay the guy was a jerk, but your story made me laugh!! If he hadn't been on a bike I could see a really good beat down!! LOL!!

  10. I can't tell you how many times I have heard some remark either walking, biking or running. Sometimes to the tune of fat ass.

Most cyclists aren't assholes, though. At least serious cyclists. They don't have the time to be telling anyone else what to do.

  11. I have never had this happen to me but I have been spooked by a man hiding in the bushes when I was running on a trail. He jumped out at me right as I passed his hiding spot. Scared the pants off me! Now I always run the trail with my husband or a friend but never alone.

  12. Gah! What a d*ck! It would be one thing if it was a friend you knew, being funny, but some stranger? And yeah, it's not always about calories.

I've been yelled at while running. I don't get the appeal. I never want to yell at someone unless it's like "you dropped this, wait!" or at a race "You got it! Keep going!" LOL.

  13. Some men on bikes are such assholes. Some men not on bikes are....

But not any men that *we* all would know...

It's so cool that you run!

  14. RUDE!!! People just don't know how to keep their mouths shut. My mother for instance... (she was horrible about judging people's appearances). When she would see an overweight person on a bike, she would say, "pedal faster, fatty!" Ugh. And I wonder why I have self image problems :)

  15. Not just rude, but totally wrong. If you are alive, you are burning calories. In a perfect world, rude bike guy would have hit a pot hole as he sped away and kissed the pavement. Ahhh--but we don't live in a perfect world, do we?
