Friday Mishmash

I just about had a heart attack yesterday morning when I pulled my Garmin off the charging cradle and saw that it was dead.  I couldn't get it to turn on at all (and yes, I did try about 10 times, thinking that surely THIS time it would turn on - anyone else get into this mindset when things don't work?).  Luckily, a quick Google search pointed me to the right directions, I pressed MODE and LAP at the same time, and then was able to power it on.  Whew!  Much as I've been coveting the cute, colorful and much smaller Garmin 10, I couldn't justify spending the money on one while my trusty 305 is still working...and with all the money that's gone into our bathroom redo, even if the 305 died, I don't have it for a new one.  Crisis averted!

I'd hoped to show you pictures of my completed bathroom today, but apparently the shower door glass pattern was made horizontal instead of vertical (it's a rain pattern), so the enclosure wasn't installed on Wednesday.  It's supposed to be coming this afternoon, but I'm not holding my breath at this point.  Grrrrrrr.

I saw this last week and it's still making me laugh:
Noisy game, but funny picture!

You know how we have a cape for our Runner of the Week?  Well, tomorrow we will have a human and a canine winner, so Amy made a dog cape and brought it over to try out on Paco.  He modeled it quite well:
Superdog, out to save the world!
 Does someone need saving?  Anyone???
"I am too busy watching over my world to look at you"

We also had a little crafty night, where we watched Amy make sparkly headbands to match our new running shirts - it's nice to have a talented sewer in our group!
Nice job, Amy!

Sit and Knit update:  Still working on that sweater.  But I got distracted by washcloths - actually, I wanted to try the other way of knitting.  Yes, there is more than one way to knit!  I knit in the English style, which means that I hold the yarn in my right hand and "throw" it over the needle.  The other version is continental knitting, where you hold the yarn in your left hand and "pick" the yarn with the right needle - it's supposed to be the fastest way to knit.  As with running, I'm not knitting for speed, but I thought it might be nice to know how to knit that way.  I started a simple piece (the washcloth) and attempted to knit continental - I armed myself with yarn, needles, and my iPad, where I kept watching a video demonstrating the technique.  After a couple of rows, I decided that it wasn't worth the bother and went back to my tried-and-true way.  I guess the old adage holds true:  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  But I did get a washcloth finished:
Pattern was knit, knit, purl, knit, knit, purl - you'd think I couldn't mess it up, but you'd be wrong...

And I started on another one, where I'm playing with changing color but not cutting the yarn - you just drop it when you switch colors, and then twist it up the side when you change back:

All knit stitches - playing with how many times to twist the yarn on the side.  Fun test project!

We have a roll-back week with our mileage tomorrow - only 4 miles on tap.  Of course, the heat and humidity is back, so it'll feel more like we're doing 8, but that's running in Texas for you.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Paco looks like a real superhero :-). Glad you got your garmin to work. I am always going to Dr. Google to learn how to fix things. Have a great weekend Shelley!

  3. And were you surprised by that panic? Funny how one can get attached to that dumb GPS... I mean really - you know your routes. If you were going to run 2 miles, it would still be the same 2 miles without the Garmin. Yet still you've reached the point where you don't feel right running without it. Now you understand what the experts mean when they say it's good to run naked once in a while.

    1. Ironically, we switched up our route and actually needed the Garmin to know when we'd hit 2 miles...

  4. I've had the same problem with my Garmin 305! The first time I panicked and called Garmin Customer Service!!!!! Now I always check my watch before I leave the house (pretty sure you need to press Mode and Lap while the watch is on the charger :)

  6. What? You didn't try the tried and true method of hitting the object repeatedly on the desk to get it to work? I do love Google. For example, this morning I typed in "how to remove gum from" and it came right up with "hair," and had 6 solutions for that problem. Not that that's a problem I'm having this mornng or anything...

    Paco--the consummate professional!

I can hardly wait to see your sparkly headbands modeled. Will you wear them on your run tomorrow morning?

  7. Paco just needs an eye mask and booties! Halloween costume!

Seriously - you and Helen with your reno posts. Even with all the problems, I have that real itch again, thank you.

  8. My grandma knitted while she watched religious television - it was amazing to watch her because she never really looked at what she was knitting and it went so fast - afghans (sp?!) were her thing - she could make one in a couple day!

Paco looks so cute with the cape! We could never put anything on Ed without him tearing it off in 10 seconds. Enjoy your run, even in the humidity!

  9. HA! The Hungry Hungry Hippo is cracking me up. That was one of my favorite games as a kid (probably because it was so noisy!)

Awww, and Paco makes a pretty cute super hero!

  11. Oh my gosh, look at Paco! Too, too cute!

I had that same problem with my Garmin too. Don't want to worry you but it was the start of the end of my first Garmin, sigh! Glad you got it working again.
