Wednesday Workout Update

I am really enjoying the early morning "land workouts" that Julia and I have been doing over the last few weeks.  OK, I'll admit I don't enjoy it when my alarm goes off at 5:30 am, but once we get going with our 3 mile walk (and get our chattering/therapy session in), followed by the rest of our workout, I'm very glad I made the effort.  Plus, we've been appreciating the slower summer days (less students in town = places to actually sit at Starbucks), and have been treating ourselves to an iced drink afterward.  Such a nice way to wind down - normally everyone is in such a rush to get to work or their next errand that these slower mornings are something to savor.
Sometimes it's a double-drink day, with water AND an iced non-fat latte!
Love love LOVE our new bright shoes - plus our neon-colored socks made us extra glow-y!

Once my running mileage increases a lot, I'll probably scale back on my walks, but for now, it's working out nicely.  I was amazed to see that I covered 16 miles last week (9 walking/7 running).  I'm hoping that all of this time on my feet, along with the lunges/squats and core work, will help with making me feel stronger when I run.

Last Tuesday evening (not yesterday but a week ago) we had a Run for Froyo on our schedule with running club.  Y'all.  It was 97 degrees when we started our run!  Plus the fireball - er, sun - was still out and it made for a pretty terrible time...I felt awful most of the next day.  We'll do another froyo run, but not until it cools down considerably.  Here's a picture of the survivors:
Please note the two ladies in flip flops - they were the wise ones who chose not to run and just came for the froyo...smart, very smart!

We had a great day on Saturday with running club.  After the last two weeks of meeting in a shopping center, we finally met at the park where we usually run from.  It was just plain fun - we did an out-and-back and got to holler at and wave to the runners going both directions, we had a clothing seminar afterward, and quite a few of our runners went home with new technical shirts from other USAFit groups.  Loved the enthusiasm and happy attitudes - I think we all fed off of that.  I ended up running 2:1 intervals with Amy and Kathleen and was pleasantly surprised at how well my legs felt considering all the walking and running miles I had on them.  Maybe all those squats and lunges that Julia and I are doing really ARE helping our runner's legs!

Here's quite a few of our group:
Runners, dogs, even small children in strollers (although I was lame and didn't get her in the shot)!

More of the same workouts this week - hey, it's working, so why mess with a good thing?

  1. I've read more than once that walking is a perfect recovery for runners. If you can combine it with the longer runs later this season, I wouldn't stop walking. When I ran the long distances for my first half, I kept walking. I could run 11 miles in the morning and walk Bella 30 to 60 minutes in the afternoon. So if you can, keep doing it.

    Running for froyo! Good idea.
I didn't have to run yesterday but we had froyo at work because summer vacation starts for most people and we have summer weather. Nice and delicious gesture of the company :)

    1. You make a good point about walking for recovery - I'll try to keep it up. Anything to get my legs stronger!

That was very sweet of your company to treat everyone to froyo. They seem to do a lot of nice things for their employees; that kind of stuff goes a long way in building a good work environment.

  3. 97 degrees! I don't think I could run in that heat, you are very brave Shelley! I would probably also be the one in flip flops. I know, what a wimp I am :-)

  4. Wow! That is a big group you have. Nice. Hmmm--Katrin is nice to call that brave. I say, "You crazy girl." I'm glad you're still alive to tell us about it!

I love your morning workouts, with the coffee break afterwards. You have inspired me to get out most mornings for a walk. Not at 5:30, but earlier than I used to do! Noah says thank you.

  7. I cannot even imagine running in this Texas heat. I won't even walk my dog in it. I do it early morning and late evening.

  8. OMG - 97 degrees? Once it hits 90, I am pretty miserable, especially if it is humid. My crank meter really gets rolling, too.

Good thing you all made it for the froyo! You'll have to do a breakfast froyo run :D It's dairy, right?
