Crazy Times

It has been a wild ride lately - life has been abnormal, in a good way, for well over a month now.  And even though it's all been for happy reasons, there's been a crazy amount of celebrating going on - which, naturally, involves food (glorious food!).  Trying to keep a semblance of normalcy, when it comes to eating, has been a challenge.  There's been a lot of traveling, and visitors, and celebrations (graduation, birthday party, more random birthday events (hey, turning 50 takes a village), anniversary, Jeff's birthday) - it's been great fun but also kind of difficult to not go too far off the rails, especially since the crazy times just keep coming!

For example, we are coming off Burgerpalooza week - what, you didn't know that there is an official week dedicated to burgers?  OK, it might just be our own invention...but dang, what a week it was! I've been in north Texas since last Tuesday visiting our kids, and over the course of the week, we've had dinner at Smash Burger, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Scotty P's, and Mooyah Burgers.  All restaurants that we don't have in our town, so it's a treat to get to try them (or revisit them, as with Scotty P's - still my favorite).  What can I say, this is Texas and we do love beef!  But, I'm ready for a week of salads; we've been to the grocery store and laid in some healthy food so that will happen.  Eating treat meals is fun, but eating normally, especially after so many treat meals, is actually fun, too.

Another part of this crazy time has been exercise - I've had good weeks, and then not-so-good weeks.  Like last week - I didn't get any runs in.  However, I did get a mega-ton of stair climbing in...my kids moved into a three-story townhouse and I think I've climbed these stairs about a gazillion times (no exaggeration, I swear!) as I helped them with unpacking and sorting everything that was haphazardly thrown together during the last minute panic of moving.  But again, I'll be glad to get back to some more regular exercise, and I'm starting that with a long walk this morning.

I'm lucky in that I can see an end to the craziness of the last month and a half; I know that sometimes life throws crazy at you and there's no foreseeable end in sight.  I've enjoyed everything, absolutely...but I will be glad to get back to my normal, albeit a little mundane, lifestyle...until the next round of craziness comes around.

  1. I love me some craziness from time to time but I LOVE routine. I'm such a routine person :)

I'm sure you'll be back in routine before this week is over. And those stairs are definitely good exercise!

  3. The Five Guys chain started showing up around these parts within the last couple of years.

Crazy can be fun and exciting but also tiring, well at least for me. Enjoy your walk and calm.

  4. We got a 5 Guys, but haven't tried it yet. John kind of went off beef, so there is no point in going there if he's not going to eat LOL!

Crazy is okay for a very, very short period of time. I can always tell when the crazy times are coming because I start making lists of things that need to get done LOL.

At least you have a good crazy going on. Way better than bad crazy.

  5. I've stayed away from 5 Guys; I heard they were pretty expensive for what you got. That said, sounds like you kept an overall handle on the 6 weeks or so, and can now get back to normal. All good! Life happens! :)

  7. I love 5 Guys, but In 'n' Out is still my favorite of the chains.

Fun crazy times are good, but I hear you on getting back to the routine. It's what I think on almost every vacation! :)

  8. Shelley - get a watermelon! I know you love that in the summer, so if you are tempted to eat something not on plan - eat that. :)

I would have done the same thing though - LOVE 5 guys - there is one within walking distance of my office, and I've only been there once in the last year - so good! Don't beat yourself up - it's life, you had fun and just move on :)

    1. I forgot to get a watermelon last night when we were at the store - got distracted by the cherries, and had a Homer Doh! moment when I got home. :(

  9. Sounds like you made it through without too much damage! God I love 5 Guys. I doubt I will ever be able to eat there again but as you say "I've had more than my fair share over the years" :) I use that one when I'm thinking about something I won't ever be able to eat again.

It's the perfect time of year to be eating lighter so at least there's that!

  11. Ha, sounds like when we were in Austin - after a few days we were both craving a salad from all the meat we ate!

I had to laugh about it takes a village to turn 50! :D

  12. I know what you mean. I say all the time that I enjoy my boring little life, in my cookie-cutter corner of the suburbs. I like the consistency and the lack of drama. I can only handle about one celebration a month!

  13. The craziness is what's so awesome about life, isn't it? I know what you mean about getting back to "normal," but once in awhile (I mean, how often do you turn 50?? Thank god only once, right?) it's a lot of fun.

Just how many is a gazillion, anyway?

  15. Next time you come this way, you need to try Twisted Root Burgers. Soooo good! And I'm going to have to try those you mention. I haven't been to any of them and I live here!
