Wednesday Workout Update

Last week I ran a half marathon.  Not all at once, mind you, but seeing that my weekly miles added up to 13.1 made me smile.  And then cringe - yikes, am I really going to do that all at once in December?  I think I'm going to employ the "run the mile you're in" way of thinking for this training season, because it's way too early for me to get the heebie-jeebies about my second half marathon!

********************

Monday, Julia and I met up for an early morning run, but we had an interloper - my son Max!  He decided that he's going to run the BCS half marathon with us in December, so he got fitted for a new pair of running shoes on Sunday at our favorite running store, and started his training on Monday.  Now, he may be young, he may have long legs, but Julia and I outlasted him - score one for the old broads fit women!  Hey, we have to take our victories when we can, because I know that it'll only take Max a couple of weeks to build up to nearly where I am now - and I've been working at this for six months!

 Max and the fit women!

I took Tuesday off from running - my left leg has been bugging me, and I figured, why press it?  I'm trying to train smart this time, and if I miss a run once in a while, it's not the end of the world.  Plus, I had plans for the evening - the running store had a yoga class!  The last time I did yoga was in September - after my ankle surgery it was too dark and cold for outdoor yoga, and they never started back up in the spring, which is too bad, as I really liked the instructor.  This new class was fun - they had no idea if anyone was going to show up, but we packed the store!  Most of the poses came back to me pretty quickly, and it felt great to stretch...I'm hoping that this will help my aching leg (which I think is just sore from running too much on the slanted side of the road).
Downward dog!

Yoga is supposed to be calm, meditative and relaxing, unless you're me...we were doing a side plank, and my arm was shaking so much that I started laughing and couldn't stop.  Oh well - I guess every class has a clown?

Tomorrow I should be running with Erica, and Saturday, the early morning crazies are going to meet before the running club and get our long run in before the sun rises.  Considering it was 106 degrees yesterday, I think that's a good plan.

  1. Cool that Sam will be doing the half with you in December. You got your family running addicted :)

Was the yoga class a one time thing or are there going to be regular classes and if so, will you join it?

    1. Well, Max is...he ran the miserable White Rock half with Jeff and it took him a while to want to run again after that, lol!

The yoga class will be a weekly thing - and you just pay a donation to the instructor, which is nice...no contracts or passes to buy. And heck yes, I'll be joining it as often as I can!

  2. Fun! Max might be young but it doesn't matter what age a person is, it's easy to lose endurance.

Jealous of your new running store and how they've jumped right into the community. I think yoga is one of the best cross-training activities EVER for runners.

How many weeks until the running club catches up with your long run?

    1. Quite a while - the halfs run each distance twice, and we're just on 2 miles...maybe 7 weeks?

    2. Wow. Good for you guys for keeping up your long run then! No point in going backwards.

  3. Yay!! How cool to have Max run the half marathon with you!

LOL Those side planks are a beast. I do the shaking thing too.

Be careful out in that terrible heat. I can't believe how hot it is! I walked outside at 5am Monday and it was already hot. Dare I say I'm ready for fall?

Hope that leg feels better soon. Those slants will get ya. Sometimes I get on the opposite side just to try to balance it out but the perfectionist in me is screaming to get on the correct side of the road the entire time. LOL

    1. I know, I've been trained too well and can't run "with" traffic anymore! I just need to do more running on the sidewalk, or at the park.

And the heat. Yeah, the only thing we're escaping at 5am is the sun...it's already hot!

  4. Waving at Fran--I get her kids mixed up too!!

Do you know we had this 'cold wave' here, and it was too cold for me to want to get out in the morning to walk?

I am worried about that running on the slanted road! Can't we get them to do something about that?!

And yes--great running store, offering yoga classes. They seem like they are very smart business people.

  5. Yep, training smart is the way to go Shelley - missing a run here and there won't matter in the long run. Hooray for Max signing up too!

  9. I have a silly question. When you reply to a comment does Blogger tell the commentor that you replied?

Yay for Max joining you for the race.

  11. Starting early or waiting until late in Texas in the Summer is a must if you are going to work out outside! It is so hot (my car thermometer read 121 a couple of days ago).

The loft community I am moving to has a yoga class. I can't wait to try it. Hope I am ready for it by then. My boss keeps telling me the stretching in yoga is really good for a bad back. It just depends on which way you make me stretch!

  12. How great that your son will run the half with you, he is adorable. How old is he? Good idea to take a rest if your leg is bothering you.

    1. Mine is 22 also. He doesn't run though, he is more of a sit in his room playing video games and talking to friends on the computer kind of guy. I'd love it if he would run with me.

    2. Oh, mine does plenty of that too. I'm glad that he does get some exercise...he enjoys it, but like me, sometimes has a hard time getting out the door.
