Friday Mishmash

Getting serious here for a minute - backstory is that a couple of weeks ago, there was a murder in our town.  A knife and a gun were used.  Arrested was an 18-year-old high school senior, who basically did this because he wanted to kill someone - he had no connection to the couple that he attacked.  So on Halloween night, among all of the cute and fun trick-or-treaters, we answered the door to one lone boy, holding a fake bloody knife and wearing a dark hooded costume pulled low over his face.  He was looking down and didn't say anything.  I tried to peek under to see his face and he just ducked down further.  I ended up tossing some candy into his bag and shut the door, but I've been disturbed ever since.  Not only was this creepy, but it was bad judgement, in my opinion, to act that way, especially after what had happened.  I realize he is probably just a clueless teenager, but sometimes, they need to be clued in.  And I'm mad at myself for not confronting the young man and saying something.  Sorry, I know this isn't the usual stuff I write about, but it's been bothering me.  Would you have said something?

OK, in happy fun things, I got my hair cut and highlighted yesterday - I feel like a new woman!  Of course, I spent the week leading up to the appointment trying to figure out if I should keep the curly style, or go to a more sleek, blow-dried look for winter.  Luckily, my hairdresser worked her magic, and while I left with it dried straight, I will also be able to do curls, if I want.
Still fairly long, which I like.
I got highlights AND lowlights this time - supposedly more of a natural look, and also helps to cover the gray, which is becoming quite prominent, dang it.

I had my four week post-op follow-up appointment on Wednesday, and overall my doctor is pleased with my progress.  He did notice that some scar tissue is building up on one of my incisions and demonstrated, painfully, how he wanted me to do some massage to break it up.  He said my range of motion is pretty good but now I need to do some runner's stretches (the one where you have your foot on the ground behind you and lunge forward) to improve it.  As for running, well, he thinks I'm more likely to be about another four weeks away from it, and honestly, I'm not surprised given how much it still hurts.  I'm OK with that - but if it goes beyond four weeks, then heads are gonna roll! ;)

If you are lucky enough to live near a lucy store, please know that they are having their annual birthday sale on Saturday, with 25% off the entire store, and they will also be giving additional goodies to shoppers.  Have I mentioned that I live nowhere NEAR a lucy store?  Sadness.  But, I will be having a product review and giveaway in the future, so yay for that!

Pinterest Pin of the Week:
In honor of all of us bloggers whose arms could be just a tad bit longer for our self-portraits!

I am excited to tell you that Fashion Friday will return next week, because beginning Monday, I am starting my seasonal job once again at James Avery, and I get to dress up!  Not sure what I'm more excited over - the job, or being able to wear something other than shorts and a swimsuit.  Kind of a combination, actually, because I also get to wear the jewelry while I'm there.  Win-win!

Have a great weekend!

  1. OMG SHELLEY YOUR HAIR IS GORGEOUS!!
(And I am not just saying that as someone with highlights and lowlights, LOL.) I absolutely love the cut, love how she straightened it, but OMG the color is really, really flattering and natural.

Make sure you buy that expensive Pureology for it! It really does make the color last, but you only need a tiny bit per wash, so a bottle does last for a long time. I go 2-3 months between having to buy new ones, and the conditioner usually lasts about 6 months for me.

  2. I love your hair! It looks great.

I live right by a Lucy outlet, so if you know there is something you want to pick up, I can get it for you and send it via snail mail.

What's 4 more weeks after so long without running. It is totally worth it to heal properly and wait the little bit of extra time. And to do that painful massage - it is worth it in the long run.

    Happy Friday!

  3. About the boy, in my own town I would have said something to him but in other towns, I don’t think so. The past years there have been so many people killed here in Holland because they interfered in arguments. The only intention was helping and by doing that they ended up dead.
I don’t understand people like that 18-year old that kill people over nothing.

You look HOT Shelley, I love your hair, it looks great.

It’s great to hear you are healing well and the running: you will be doing that soon.

That taking self portrait pic is brilliant: why did I never think of that.

Have fun at your job starting Monday, can’t wait for Fashion Friday, you know how much I love it!

  4. I'm usually pretty outspoken so I think - especially if it was a teenager - I would have said something. And since when do teenagers trick or treat?!

"heads will roll" Hahahahahaha! Ankles might too if you run too soon so cool it.

So, now I want your hair color. I've been thinking about letting myself have highlights as a reward for something. Of course I need to achieve something but still. Ima have to print that photo out and take it to my hairdresser to see what she thinks. Yep, you can just call me Stealy McStealerson!!

  5. 1. The hair is so pretty!!! I love it!
    2. I live nowhere near a lucy either I think.
    3. Did he tell you about breaking up a capsule of vitamin E over the scar itself so you have less of a scar? Other friends who have had csections did it and it worked for them I guess.
    4. I'm sorry you're upset by that kid. Today's youth is so messed up. I'm sure it was bad when I was younger but I guess and this is just my opinion that violence, prison, being an all around bad/dumbass is glorified so much that kids don't see the implications of their actions at all.

In our neighborhood everyone is out on their porches waiting for kids to hand out treats and most of them tell the kids "no costume, no trick or treat, no candy".

We have little one's so we don't even buy candy anymore since we are out with them. Maybe have a whole group next year at the end of your drive way to greet kids?

  6. That's it - I nead a hair cut - stat!

Love the color too - it makes you look younger!

Yep, the gray hair is taking over my head too dammit. :(

So excited you'll be back to your seasonal job, but I secretly think its just so you can dress up and wear pretty jewelry and not the money! :D

    Happy Friday!

  7. Hate to hear about the murder. That is so sad. What is wrong with people?!
Not sure if I would have said anything to the creepy teen. :-/

LOVE your hair!!!!! It looks great!!

Darn ankle. So you have to break up the scar tissue yourself?! Ouch!!

    Yay for fashion Friday!!!

  8. Love the new hair. I think I would have said something to the kid, but then I wasn't in your position. Yes, kids need need to get a clue. I think that was totally inappropriate to even dress like that. I hate Halloween anyway. I think it's a dumb holiday. I know, I am a party pooper!

    Can't wait for fashion Friday!

  9. You know what? Given the circumstances, I would have slammed the door shut and immediately called the police. Yeah, really bad judgement, and needs to be scared straight.

Yes, your hair is gorgeous, but I always think your hair is gorgeous. I'm more worried about you standing on that ankle on MONDAY! Are you gonna be okay?

  10. The hair wins!

I always like to think I'm brave enough to confront idiots like that kid at your door. The brave me thinks that I would have something like, "I have a gun to match your knife. Only mine is real. GTFO my property." The adult part of me would like to have confronted him and said, "Not funny. Inappropriate. Now GTFO my porch" (I'm working on my crotchety old lady routine.) In reality, I would have done the same thing you did, only no candy.

  11. Could the recent situation make you a little more senstative to this kind of thing Shelley? In years past would you have thought anything of it? I tend to be more sensative to situations that I have been through or can relate to or have been seen on the news etc..I think I would of done the same thing as you, avoid confronting him at all costs. You never know what goes on in the minds of people, and given the recent situation just makes it that much more real. I think you handled it right, in my honest opinion.

I love you hair! you look beautiful. I need to get mine done badly, but I'm kinda leaning towards doing something really different, kinda sick of the blonde on me.

    Have a great weekend!

    You ROCK!

  13. I love your hair!

As for the kid, I don't know as I would have said anything. It probably didn't occur to him, and what about his parents? I do have to say as a teenager at least he dressed up. I don't like the older kids that come up to the door with no costume and expect to get candy.

  14. You look fabulous darling! I just got my hair cut and colored too. It just lifts your spirits! Sorry about the scarey murder and dumb kid thing. I would freak too. Awhile back something kinda like that happened on my street, except no one made it into a Halloween costume! Glad you are on the mend! Keep shining!

  15. I love your new 'do.

Oh my gosh to that teenager. Sometimes they're just SO clueless. I think I might have said something, but in the moment, I might have also been too creeped out.

  16. Stupid teens .. I would probably have said something I think, if I hadn't felt scared or something similar.

LOVE your hair - you look really, really beautiful!!

  17. Oh and I'm glad to hear that you are healing, although that massage doesn't sound too comfortable.

  18. Your hair looks really great! I love it!

I think if that boy had come to my door I'd have been to scared to say anything, and would have shut the door without giving candy. Maybe that would be message enough?? Scary, makes me wonder what that kid was thinking or feeling.

  19. Deacon Drive?!? Oh wow, that's awful. I likely wouldn't have said anything to a teenage boy that was alone---

  20. Your hair is beautiful Shelley! I love it! I sound like a broken record but don't rush that ankle of yours! It needs time to heal and frankly running will be hard on it. Start slowly, if you injure it early on in the recovery you will only be set back again. Take your time, it will be worth it! I'm so glad you are addicted to pinterest too :-)

  21. Hi Shelley. Yikes, what a sad story regarding the murder. I think I would have done the same, just given him some candy and bolted the door. On a much brighter note, you hair looks FANTASTIC!!!!!!!! Love the pinterest pic (I really need to check out that site!) Have a fantastic weekend, good luck with the massage of scar tissue!!!

  24. Intuition is there for a reason. You didn't say anything and that is perfectly ok. No need for regrets.
