Friday Mishmash - Granola Winners!

You guys.  Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the sweet comments on my blogiversary post.  I never, in a million years, thought that from my first tentative blog post would come the support I have today.  Y'all are the best!  Just so you know...I read every single comment and love to see who is reading my blog!

Without further ado, the winners of the granola are:

(I have to tell you that I literally LOL'd when I saw the first winner that random.org drew - #1, Fran, who is almost never eligible to win any of my giveaways because she doesn't live in the U.S.  Awesome!)  Anyway, congratulations to the winners - I'll get the granola made early next week and get it sent out to you soon!

Last call for Prom pictures - the post is going up on Monday, so if you have some you've been meaning to submit, now is the time!  Send them to 40somethingsjourney@gmail.com.  Thanks!

A few days ago Debby posted, wondering about buying these flip flops.  I got so excited I had to comment in ALL CAPS, because I recently bought a pair and LOVE THEM!  Seriously, these are the most comfortable shoes I think I've ever owned...and I'll admit, I had a hard time shelling out the bucks for them, because believe me, it was big bucks for these flip flops.  But I needed something to wear this summer because all of my sandals from last summer have a wedge heel and that was hurting my ankle.  So I bought them and have not regretted it for a moment.  I even did that epic shopping trip to Ikea in these shoes - walked around for hours on a concrete floor - and my feet did not hurt.  Ah-mazing.  Anyway, just though I'd share. :)

It's (almost) summertime (it IS if you look at our temperatures) and our old friends Big Salad and Watermelon have been appearing in the kitchen again...
How I've missed you, Big Salad!  I started buying a couple of slices of roasted turkey breast at the deli instead of grilling chicken - so much easier, and I'm preferring the texture of the turkey better.  Jeff swears this was my best Big Salad yet!
And you, Watermelon!  My gosh, you are tasty!!!

Ever since I turned 40 and had to start having annual mammograms, I decided to reward myself for being a big girl and actually doing them.  I figure I used to bribe my kids when they had to deal with certain unpleasant procedures - it was the least I could do for me.  Usually my reward was something wicked like Coldstone Creamery ice cream, although in recent years I splurged on lemon sorbet.  This year?  I actually didn't want ice cream or even frozen yogurt (I know, you probably want to feel my forehead to see if I'm well, right?).  I decided to take myself to the movies - my future second husband has a new flick out called Everything Must Go, and I wanted to see it.  So get this:  not only did I go to the movies, but I snuck in my own treats instead of hitting the snack bar.  Want to know what I brought, what I was really craving?
Cherries!
(Don't worry, I had frozen yogurt last night.  All is well.)

The movie was really good.  Not your normal over-the-top funny Will Ferrell movie, but a great story, and pretty sobering.  Yes, that was a pun.  You'll see why if you go watch the movie.

And now it's time for another edition of Fashion Friday!  A little background:  I've been wanting a pair of white denim capris (or jeans) since last summer.  I'm a little picky when it comes to the fabric on lighter-colored pants - namely, I want a heavier fabric, because it helps to hide the lumpiness of my thighs.  Yes, even with all the dang running, swimming and workouts, my thighs are not smooth.  Not sure that they will ever be, but rather than lament the lumps, I decided that there has to be something that would work.  Late last summer I found the pants - but at $98, I could not buy them.  Even though I looked pretty good in them, if I do say so myself!  I wrote about them here, if you're wanting to see the magical jeans.  Anyway, this year, I'm in a bigger size, but by god, I was determined to get my white pants!  I found them a couple of weeks ago and have been wearing them constantly - I declare this my Summer of White Capris!  These are Lee white denim capris in a petite length - I think I paid about $23 for them at Kohl's - much more affordable than the other magical jeans!  You got a sneak peek on my picture update...here's another way I wore them this week:

Paired with a top I bought last summer...and what do you suppose I'm looking at?
Here's how it looked last August with black pants...and seriously, what am I looking at?

This is a big step for me - being comfortable in light-colored pants.  I've worked the "dark = slimming" concept on the bottom for decades, but I am finally ready to shed a little of that insecurity and rock the white jeans.  Obviously I wasn't ready last summer, when I was thinner, but I'm loving them now.  I guess I really am accepting my new body!  About time, dontcha think?

And in the "some things never change" category:
Paco ALWAYS has to get in the picture...
Always.

Have a great weekend!  We are headed back up to visit the boys, help with building and installing Sam's new furniture, and hopefully getting in some time at one of the pools in his new apartment complex!  See you at the Prom on Monday!

  6. Every fashion Friday Paco makes me laugh because he sneaks in the picture every time. I like the white capris, you can totally wear light colors!

I have Crocs flip flops and love them. I've been walking on them 14 days on vacation in Italy without trouble.

Funny I bought cherries for the first time this season too. I prefer a Cantaloupe melon above all the other. Had one last week and it tasted great.

    Have a great weekend Shelley.

  7. I meant to reward myself after my mammogram yesterday, but I forgot then picked up my daughter from school. It really wasn't that awful, just like everyone told me.

Now, I don't want to go back and do it again until I have to, I'm just sayin'.

  8. Congratulations to the winners!!

I tried on some flippies like those at DSW. They were so comfy! Felt like you could walk miles in them. But I ended up getting some cute sandals. :)

Oh my gosh, girl, you totally rock that outfit! LOVE THEM! I mean, love it so much that I'm thinking of going to Kohls and copying you. I have such a tough time with white because you can usually see straight through it. But maybe denim would work out? Would go so well with a top I'm stalking at Dressbarn that just happens to go on sale today. :)

Funny story: I once wore a cute dress to a laser light show. In the hallway where we waited in line were blacklights. Those blacklights made my white tighty whities and bra just stand out. I was hiding behind people. Don't know why that story came to mind. Maybe worrying about buying white pants? :)

Have a GREAT time this weekend. Be careful on the roads. The crazies will be out (me!).

  9. I am also 'one with the lumpy thighs' who must wear white pants all summer. i love love love the fit and look of these: http://drawstringsofmalibu.com/

HEY, I ORDERED A PAIR OF THOSE FLIP FLOPS!! SERIOUSLY, I AM SO EXCITED I AM SHOUTING THIS TO YOU!!!

    Paco = love.

And I got a big laugh about your 'don't worry I had frozen yogurt last night.' You knew I was going to worry, didn't you.

Also, you can go to the movies with that killer popcorn smell and not indulge?

  10. I can't wait for all the prom pictures!!

Okay, I need to buy a pair of those flip flops, cost be damned. I've been wearing my BORN brand slip on shoes every single day for 2 years straight - there is no place for my toes to go because it's been worn away!

Have fun with the boys - we actually have nothing planned and I am thrilled! Hopefully a bonfire tonight before we hit the 80's on Sunday and Monday!

My step son said its been HOT in Austin! Keep cool and have a great weekend!

  11. I know I missed a lot not reading blogs for 6+ months but honestly, you don't look bigger than last year. Could it be muscle?

Love the white pants and the flip flips. Vee at http://veegettinghealthy.blogspot.com

  12. You really look great Shelley - you certainly do not look a size bigger!

I need to get me to Kohls so I can wear capris than don't make my short legs looks like stumps or that I am wearing high waters.

  13. YAY for big ass summer salads. Love 'em. Love that Paco likes to strut his stuff for the camera too!

  14. No, I don't have those but I will be checking them out for sure!

  15. What a fun post. I heart Kohl's. The pants are cute. Paco is cute.

  16. Those flip flops look incredibly comfortable and the cost, I think, is great for a good pair of shoes. This is coming from the girl who regularly dishes out $100+ on a pair (but who has plantar fasciitis and would be crippled otherwise). Anyways, I am SHOCKED that the flip flops are a neutral color after I perused that website :-)

I love the white capris on you! I think you must have the right leg length or something because I don't think a lot of people can pull off white...even super skinny women. It's all about proportion and you've got it right!

Have fun with the boys this weekend!

  17. Love your white capris! I have a pair and I love mine too. Who says we can't wear white unless we are a size 2 and 20 years old? Feh!

Your big salad and watermelon look so delicious, and so do the cherries, I bought my first cherries of the year last night. My favorite fruit by far!

  18. I have a giant watermelon in my fridge that I am just about to cut up. YUM.

Love love the white capris on you, and they do not make you look bigger at all. The trick is you found the ones with the right fit at the right length -- which is not easy to do at all!

  19. What a super fun post!!!! I laughed out loud at your "future second husband"! Great looking flip flops, love the blue toes, LOVE the top and LOVE Paco the "fashion accessory"! Hope your long weekend is going well Shelley!!!

  21. You look great in the white pants and I would not know that you were a bigger size than last year, you look great in both photos!

I read the review about the movie and was wondering about it.. will have to check it out when it makes it here to Europe.

    Have an awesome week :-)

  22. I know I am commenting on an old post, but I wanted to tell you about a trick I learned for looking better in white pants. I found thatt if I wear my Danskin black capris under them (black tights would probably do the same thing), it hides all the bumps and bulges that want to show through white pants. And you cannot tell I am wearing them. I know you probably wouldn't want to do this when it is really hot, bit it works if you are going to in an air-conditioned environment most of the time.
