Wednesday Workout Update

Thank you for all of the kind words on my half marathon recap post.  I am still feeling pretty dang proud of myself for making it through that race on my own.  As a social runner, this was a very big deal, to run so far without a friend alongside me.  I'm still slightly shocked to have completed the race without doing my usual "screw this, I'm walking" attitude.  Without realizing it, I became mentally strong over the course of this training season, as well as physically fit.

So the day after the race, I was feeling sore in areas where I don't normally hurt, like my quads and my hips.  It's getting better, and honestly, I think feeling sore is to be expected...after all, I pushed myself for over 13 miles!  Yesterday we did an easy recovery run and while it was slow going to start, I began to feel fairly normal as we ran.  I'm sure I'll be good to go by the time Saturday's 5 miler comes along.

On Monday night, we had our end-of-season dinner.  Everyone was still on their runner's high from the race, and it was a lot of fun.  We had burgers and fries, and a cookie cake that we pretty much destroyed:
Is it a cookie, or is it a cookie cake?  The box said cookie cake, but there was disagreement.  All I know is that it was delicious!

We posed for a group picture:
I'm very impressed with those who knelt for the picture just one day after the race!

We started with 50 members this training season, and about 11 dropped out within the first few weeks.  We lost a few more to injuries and other commitments, but ended up with 26 running the race, which is not too shabby.  I'm pleased with how our season turned out, and also pleased to be handing over the organizer reins to Amy.  Now I can just show up and run on Saturdays - ahh, what a relief!

  1. I think you had a great season and I enjoyed every post about it! And again: your group is great and 26 members running the race is great.

    Again: well done my friend.

  2. What's better than a cookie? A cookie with frosting on it!! 26 members from one club running a race? That seems like a really big number. Is yours one of the larger running clubs that you know of? Also, really glad to hear you've already followed up with a run and it felt okay. That bodes well for the future, I think.

    1. You know, I think the "other" running club in town might be bigger, but I bet we had the same amount of runners (or possibly more) at this race, which is interesting. There was a group from Cypress (near Houston) who chartered a luxury bus to come up for the race - a lot of them, but coming from a highly-populated area like Houston, that's normal.

  3. 26 finishing out - guess you needed to do a marathon for a mile for each runner :D

And this is just a bigass cookie (which I will have some of, please).

  4. You did a wonderful job with all the planning, water stations, etc. and logistics so you should be proud of a job well done - but I know you'll just be happy to show up and then go out to eat at the diner and not have to think about it all!

    1. Thanks - I did do a good job. I don't give myself enough credit for making it all happen. :)

  5. I think post race gatherings were one of my favorite things about having an active running club. Nothing like being able to yammer on about your race and have someone else appreciate every word you say lol!

You were mentally stronger and I think that have an injury free training season helped you in that area as well.

    mmmmmmm cooooookie nom nom nom

    1. Post-race yammering is awesome. We had one marathoner EAT THE VASELINE ON A STICK!!! LOLOLOL for days...he would not listen to us about fuel, would not carry it, nor carry a water bottle, so I don't feel sorry for him at this point.

    2. Desperate times call for desperate measures? For goodness sake, why wouldn't you listen to people who already know?!!!!!

    3. It was so weird - we'd have our seminars telling everyone about the importance of fueling during runs, we'd show examples, and yet, he always had a skeptical look on his face, like "I don't need this stuff" - HAHAHAHA. He looked like HELL as he crossed the finish line. I'm sure he was hurting way more than he should have.

  8. You definitely do not get enough credit for all the work you do. You rock and as one of the 26 runners who completed the season, I can say that we could not have run the race and reached our goals without you!!!
