Wednesday Workout Update

And just like that, BOOM.  I ran a mile without stopping.  Last time I did that was in September, before my hamstring got so messed up.  But last Thursday, it happened.  I met up with Cary to run two miles.  We were doing an out-and-back; we started out slowly and hit the corner where I knew the half mile mark was...and then we kept going.  We hit the mile mark, turned around, and ran for another quarter mile, where we took a one-minute walking break, and then ran the rest of the way in.  YEEHAW!  I was pretty happy to finally do this; I was beginning to think I'd never get back to being able to run short distances without doing intervals.

Then on Saturday, I did it again.  Ran a mile with Amy and Julia, then walked for one minute, then ran another mile!  That second mile was mostly on a gradual uphill, which was a little more challenging, but I forced myself to get through it.  There was a third mile, but I did 1:1 intervals for that one.  Still, I was pretty pleased that the Thursday run wasn't a fluke.

The other fun thing about Saturday's run was that we are all on what I like to call "happy distances" - no one is training for a half marathon anymore, so we were running anywhere from 3 - 4.5 miles...just enough to feel like you've done something, but you still feel great afterward.
 Dayna, Cary, Andi and Karen
Andi and I - we've decided that we are secret twin sisters because we are so much alike in how we think (I was standing on the curb to lessen the Devito/Schwarzenegger height difference).
Amy and Julia finishing their run (I ran 3 while they ran 4 miles).

Yesterday morning, Amy came over (it's spring break so she had time) and we ran my neighborhood route of 2.6 miles. Ran the first mile without stopping like nobody's business, yes we did!  This running thing is getting better and better.

  1. So happy for you, I'm sitting here with a big smile on my face! You've "catched up" on me, think I did about a mile without stopping this morning too. I love shorter miles, I'm not even sure if I ever want to train for a half again, at this moment I would say no, but never say never.

Happy post Shelley which makes me happy too.

  2. Isn't that a GLORIOUS feeling? No matter what the pace you feel like you're running liike the wind just because you don't have to stop and start. So happy for you! Hold on to this feeling so the next time you have a run that isn't so great (you know it's gonna happen because it just does) you won't feel like it's the end all over again. How is that hamstring feeling these days anyway?

That is about my happy distance now, too. I miss when it was 10+ miles, lol!

  4. Wow, I'm totally impressed. Especially because I know I don't even walk a mile most days now.

  5. Good job!! I'm most impressed that you ran a mile, walked one minute, THEN RAN ANOTHER MILE. Good grief, woman! I can't even imagine that! :)

  6. Yay Shelley! Maybe now that you are done with that half, lesser running distance is helping you with more prolonged running time?

I do the curb thing, too. Otherwise my neck gets tired of always having to look up at people. :D

  12. Congratulations on your running success! The farthest I have run without stopping is 3 miles. Not 3.1 but 3. I just can't seem to go that extra distance without stopping. So glad you have overcome your hamstring injury. Now that you've gone a mile without stopping there's nothing holding you back!

  13. Woot! Let's hear it for pain free mileage!! You've played it smart, though, Shelley, by listening to your body and giving it the rest it needed. Not like other people I know...like yours truly...

  14. Congrats. I am more of a race walker than a runner, but I appreciate the feeling that comes from feeling you are back on top of things.
