2017 BCS Turkey Trot 5K Recap!

This year's shirt - I always love the whimsical turkey designs for this race, and if you look closely, you can see that the arch behind the turkey is made up of a running shoe print!

Continuing with our tradition that we began in 2010 (and have only missed when we've been out of town), we ran our local Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning.  Well, I ran it - Jeff's back has been giving him a lot of issues lately and he wasn't up for running, unfortunately.  But we had a huge group this year, thanks to every Renegade being in town that morning, plus visiting family members who came along for the fun.  It was nice and cold - 39 degrees at the start of the race, YAY!  Everyone had a great run, and Logan even got his first race done thanks to his two grandmas strolling the route with him.

Here's some pictures of our morning:
Mason's first Turkey Trot!  He was all bundled up but would not keep his hands under the blanket.  After the race, I glanced over and saw that CC and Loretta had figured out a way to keep his hands warm and make him happy...
Adult gloves for the baby!  He loved them and it was pretty comical, seeing his enormous hands waving around.

Karen and I were shoe twins with our Brooks Levitates.
Andi looks like a biker chick here, in all black.  I think the gloves are what put the look over the edge in terms of being badass for me.
Diane, her sons Ben and Mick, and daughter-in-law Heather.  They are always so fun to hang around with.
Exhibit #1 - I gave my phone to Ben to take a picture of Diane and I, and this is what I got back, LOL!
OK, he did take a picture of us as well...
Group shot!  You wouldn't know it by how calm cool and collected we look, but Cary was in their car feeding Logan until just a few minutes before the race began.  We wanted to get a group picture before the race and were all hanging around the car; she got out, Logan was plunked into the stroller, we got a few quick pictures and then we were off to the start line!
This one was funny - we were looking at the pictures after the race and Cary said "I think you're looking at Logan in this one" - yep.  Is there a baby?  Ima be looking at him.

The race started and we took off running.  Since the weather was so nice, Diane and I decided to try running without doing intervals until we came to the hilly part of the route.  Even though it's been quite a while since we've run like that, I figured we could do it, and we did - we ran nonstop for the first mile and a half, until we got to the water station.  We walked through that and then took off running again, and really only walked the steep hills toward the end.  It was nice and we'll have to do that more often, maybe during our weekday runs, especially now that the weather is a little cooler.
Diane's husband surprised us by being out on the route - this was about half a mile in.  I've decided that the windbreaker I was wearing isn't particularly flattering, but I was cold and didn't care at the time.
He also managed to be at the finish line and caught us coming in - this is all I saw of the picture because Diane made the executive decision to crop herself out.  Hey, I look pretty happy here, so I'll take it.

Post-race, with our non-runners included (Jeff, Jimmymeow, and Mick, who is recovering from a broken foot).
Here comes Logan and his grandmas!  CC and Mason escorted them in; I liked this shot because you can see all of our shadows as we watched them finish.
Gammy Cindy throwing up the victory fist pump!

This race is so nice - it's low-key, there's a lot of people participating who wouldn't normally be in a 5K (there is also a 1 miler that goes around a different route), we run through a nice subdivision and many of the neighbors come out to cheer everyone on, you hear "Happy Thanksgiving" throughout the race - it's a feel-good event.  And they even had slivers of chocolate pecan pie afterward, so between that and the pumpkin pie we had when we got home, Thanksgiving was off to an excellent start!

  1. Running with a group of friends on a holiday is simply the best!

Must be time to knit that child some mittens of his own so he doesn't have to wear the adults cute picture though. LOL

    1. I don't know, I had a hard enough time when I tried to knit adult-sized mittens a few years ago...I think making tiny mittens might be a little beyond my wheelhouse, unfortunately.

  2. Hey - no worrying about flattering when you're running - comfort and warmth is way more important. (And I don't think it looks bad, I just thought you looked like you were dressed for cold). I agree Andi looks bad ass but more because she's wearing short sleeves in 39-degree weather. Holy smokes, I run in the cold all the time and even I wouldn't do that!

I always run Thanksgiving but haven't done an official trot in years. I did think I'd reconsider after I heard our local trot had a house where they were offering bloody marys or a straight shot of vodka to the runners LOL!!

    1. Oh I know, Andi in short sleeves - she "runs" warm so she's always the least-dressed of us, even in cold weather.

  3. Its funny, I was going to say I thought your jacket was so pretty! Love the colors of it. What a great way to start your Thanksgiving. Wish I had thought to exercise before I went to the big dinner! It must have been so fun to have the whole gang there :)

    1. Well thank you, I do like the colors of the jacket, but I was feeling like the Pillsbury Doughboy in it, LOL.

  4. I love how much fun you all have when you are together! What a great way to start the Holiday indeed! One of these years I hope to run the Turkey trot. It would have been perfect this year because the weather was nice.

  5. What a great turnout for your group, and how fun the babies got to do their first 5Ks!!! It's so awesome you guys were able to run without as many breaks - I hope you have more cool weather so you can keep doing that :) And I hope Jeff feels better soon!

The shirt is so cute! And I like the color they chose.
