(Black) Friday Mishmash - No Shopping Here!

Is it odd that there's nothing I want to shop for today?  I can't be the only person so overwhelmed by all the ads for STUFF that it makes me want to crawl into a hole and take cover from the madness - but then, I've never been one who loves to get out there in the crowds to shop, so there you go.  Anyway, I hope my American readers had a nice Thanksgiving and are enjoying the holiday weekend.

********************

Last month, while Jeff was in southern California, I asked him to drive by our old house and take a picture.  I was really pleased to see that our first house, which we bought in 1986, still looked really good:
Our first home!  Lake Forest, California.

The hardscape that we put in was still there, although a lot of the landscape has been changed.  I Googled the address and found a recent real estate listing with lots of pictures, and I saw that the patio, bench seating, and patio cover that we put in (with the help of my dad and my uncle) were still there and looking nice, too.  I remarked to Jeff that the house was looking great for being nearly 20 years old; he responded with "nearly 30, you mean" - yikes.  How can I have bought a house nearly 30 years ago?? I swear, I don't feel like I've been an adult for that long!

Speaking of being an adult, our youngest wanted to host Thanksgiving this year...it's normal to bring all of this to help out, right:
It was nice to only have to wash the dishes for a change, instead of also having to fill them with food!

Everything came out great, and we had a fun time - I think once you host a holiday meal, you're officially a grown up (forget all of that college graduation, real job, living on your own stuff, haha), so kudos to our youngest - nice work!

Also a perk of being an adult is getting to take on as many knitting projects as I want.  No guilt about finishing what I started before beginning a new project, nope - I had some projects ongoing, but saw a cute pattern for a hat, discovered that I had the perfect yarn for it in my stash, so bam, I cast on for it.  And then, although I'm already knitting one pair of socks, I couldn't resist casting on for another pair with some new yarn I bought earlier this month.  And that's how my project area came to look like this:
Clockwise from bottom left:  hat, hat, cowl, shawlette, sock, sock.  WHAT??

Knitting and movies today, with some leftover pumpkin pie and a turkey sandwich - sounds like a pretty nice Friday to me.  Have a great weekend!

  1. I will join you in NOT participating in black Friday shopping no way I am getting out in the crowds plus I don't do mind less consumerism.

I too have been living away from my parents for 31 years now. I stopped living at home when I was 20 if that makes us official adults.

Wow you have a lot of projects going on! Since they are here on the blog I presume they are not Christmas presents. Right now I am working on only one project a cardi for my husband which he knows about. I really want to get this done so I may stay faithful, of course sometimes I get tired of working on a long big project so I might cast on a short one something mindless and easy though!

We will we having turkey leftovers today as well. I hope you have a great weekend too!

  2. I'm running and prepping a meal for tonight while I wait for Little Helen and son-in-law to arrive. Honestly I'm just happy to have some extra time off from work. I can't even imagine shopping today. In fact, I am so anti-shopping this year I've begun to wonder how I'm going to manage getting my Christmas gift shopping done. I'm just not in the mood for some reason, it's crazy!

Glad you enjoyed your turkey day - having your child make the meal surely is a milestone!

  3. I remember hosting my first Thanksgiving! It does feel like this huge adult rite of passage! And to this day, it's still my favorite holiday. I love hosting when I can since it combines my two key skills - cooking and project planning :) Glad you had a happy Thanksgiving with your family!

  4. Love the multi-project picture! And now I want to watch movies and have leftover pumpkin pie today. Only I don't have any pumpkin pie--waaaa. Wait! I'm going to google single-serving pumpkin pie--I bet there's a recipe out there somewhere :)

  5. I am the same way about shopping... but year round I hate to do it. LOL. I am not sure why I dislike it so much - I am the exact opposite of my mom and sister!

How cool that your old house is still doing so great!

I do have to say, I felt very proud this summer when my sister and I hosted and a BBQ with a lot of food (and all the times my husband and I have hosted holidays). It does say lot about being an adult, ha ha!

  7. Happy to hear you had a lovely Thanksgiving.

I was in the next town last Friday and to my surprise there were lots of stores that were doing Black Friday. Hello: we are in the Netherlands, we don't celebrate thanksgiving but we do have to participate in Black Friday? My mailbox also got lots of offers in it for Black Friday.

I hear you on the knitting projects. Recently I started working on some cross stitch projects again after a long hiatus. I have about 10 projects and I do a different one everytime. When I have to work on the same thing over and over, I get easily bored.
