Friday Mishmash

I wish I'd taken a picture of this, but yesterday, my co-volunteer Rosalie and I rearranged the four-shelf display cabinet in the gift shop.  It was full of Fossil watches, some other jewelry, and perfume.  We organized the watches by color, mixed in some coordinating jewelry (for example, the watches with the white watchbands and silver crystals were paired with silver rhinestone earrings), and generally made everything look fresh again.  We were really pleased with how it turned out, and it was neat to see several of our regular customers stop at the case and take a look.  I guess I still had the rearranging bug after I worked on my family room...hmmm, wonder where I can strike next?

I've been knitting for well over three years now, and I have some yarn that I bought back when I was first learning that I either didn't use, or I didn't like how the project was turning out, and had ended up in a storage bin.  I started thinking about some yarn that I bought several years ago, intending to make a linen-stitch scarf.  I'd stopped knitting on that scarf because I hated the tedium of the linen stitch, and had tossed the entire project into a bin.  Well, I got to thinking that maybe that yarn might actually be sock yarn, so I dumped out the bin to look for it:
Some of this is leftover from finished projects, while some was given to me (Fran!) - it's all waiting for inspiration to strike.
I found the discarded scarf, and I was happy to see that it was indeed sock yarn!  I'm going to combine these two colors to make a pair of socks.  I think this is what's referred to as a "happy accident" - woohoo!

Speaking of socks, I used the leftover yarn from my Happy Stripe Socks that I showed you last week to make a newborn baby hat:
I followed a pattern for the size, but when I finished, it was so itty-bitty that I thought for sure I must have made a preemie-sized hat - but I compared it to a newborn hat in the hospital gift shop and it's the same size.  Dang, newborn babies have small heads!

I'm nearly finished with my Grand Old Flag socks, so I should have a new pair to show you next week.  Oh, and even though it was not cold, I wore my Happy Stripe socks yesterday to work - I loved them and kept surreptitiously looking at my feet throughout the day!

I know I'm more than a decade late with this, but I finally started watching The Sopranos while I knit.  It's good!  I see why it won so many Emmy awards, although at the time, I used to get frustrated when all the HBO shows would win, because we didn't have the movie channels and I (obviously) never got to see them.  Cut to modern times, with the Apple TV device and HBO Now, and I'm finally able to stream and catch up.  Also, I have to say that it's too bad I didn't have this show when I first met Jeff and his Italian family - I'd have understood them a little better, I suspect.  Water under the bridge at this point.

After we run seven miles tomorrow, we have a lazy weekend on tap, which sounds pretty nice to me.  Have a great weekend!

  1. Have fun with your 7 miles tomorrow at least you get to go with your friends to the Blue Baker afterwards right?
Can't wait to see pictures of your new socks!
Is that picture of your yarn your whole stash or just part of it? I think a lot of us bought yarn that we liked the color of without a pattern or project in mind when we first started. I don't buy yarn now unless I know what I want to make with it first. You asked and yes I am on Ravelry but I haven't put up any pictures of finished objects yet.

I am hoping for cooler drier air down here soon! Its been really rainy the last couple of days yuck! Hope you have a great weekend.

    1. A quick trip to BB because the Aggie football game starts at 11:00 am, but yes, FOOD. :)

This picture is really odds and ends - I've amassed a nice yarn stash and except for sock yarn (and a couple of skeins of beautifully dyed DK weight yarn that I couldn't resist), I haven't bought any this year. Of course I recently subscribed to a sweater club and a little yarn box, so my stash will grow again...

  3. Cute hate! Newborn babies' heads don't feel so small when they're coming out..just sayin'. LOL. I've slowly been cleaning and organizing different parts of my house...there's something nice about getting everything in a new place.

  4. Never seen the Sopranos? *Raises Hand* You can add all the Star Wars movies to that list for me as well.

Hope your run is cooler and drier than your forecast indicates!

    1. I saw Star Wars in the theater when it first came out, but really, they're not my thing. I hear we will be going to see the new one in December as a family...

  5. Your stash bin looked like mine last weekend. I finally dumped out the four bins I have and sorted my yarn where the cotton was in one, certain brand of acrylic in another, and so on and so forth. Plus I was winding up lots of used skeins into balls. I then only placed next to my couch the projects I wanted to work on this month and the rest were put away for later.

Love the hat and the colors of your sock yarn!! Have a good run tomorrow.

    1. I have my unused yarn sorted by weight, but these bins were a mess. It does feel good to be a little more organized, and to see what exactly I had!

  6. LOL @ Manda's comment! that is such a fun baby hat. Is there a lucky recipient?

Your yarn stash is growing by leaps and bounds! Love that you remembered that yarn and that it will work for your new sock-love!

Good luck on your run. I checked your weather the other day, and I see that you are still in the midst of summer. Its back to feeling like fall around here, but I've no doubt we'll see a bit more of summer before all is said and done.

    1. I don't know any babies! Well, one, but he got that teddy bear hat.

I remember when I bought that yarn, I was thinking "I'll never make socks with it" - HA!

Yeah, it's still summer weather here. Yay?

  7. Tony and I first watched Season 1 of the Sopranos on DVD that my FIL got for Christmas the year we got married. Hannah was obsessed with the Disney Channel back then and while she binged watched her shows, Tony and I watched like 13 episodes back to back almost - so good! Glad you are catching up - the kids are just now watching The Office!

  8. Ok, I've heard about the sopranos for so many years....I may need to binge watch them soon. (yeah, I'm a binge watcher for old tv shows like that!)

What other ideas popped into your head when you looked at the yarn box?

  9. The hat is adorable- I love the colors.

When my daughter was born, she received a little hat that was knit by a volunteer. I guess they knit a hat for each baby that is born. It was nice to receive!

  10. Ooo, what a happy coincidence with the yarn! I love that you are on a sock roll! :)

My sister just gave me a TON of yarn!!! I only had cotton (for washcloths) in stock, and now I have a ton! Not sure what to do with it all, other than store it, for now :)

  11. 3 years? You have been knitting for 3 years? I remember when you started and it doesn't seem like that long ago.

I have never watched the Sopranos either. I don't watch many shows at all. I did get into Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, but I didn't watch all the episodes (John did).

  13. I first saw the photo and recognized the yarn :)

I totally missed the Sopranos back then too and still haven't watched it, it's on my to watch list. But the point is, since I got Netflix there is much on the watch list :)
