Friday Mishmash - Floods, Guns, and Tricks

My car tricked me on Tuesday - I was trying to get to the grocery store, but the morning (which began at 4:30 am, so it's not like I wasn't up and moving, lol) got away from me.  I finally did my shopping and when I got back in the car to drive home, I was pleasantly surprised to see it was only 11:47 am.  Sweet - I wasn't as behind as I thought!  Then I brought my groceries into the kitchen and noticed the time on the microwave...yep.  Forgot to change the clock in my car for Daylight Savings Time.

You know you live in Texas when the salesman at Lowe's tells you to put the receipt for your five year warrantied light bulbs in your gun safe.  Um, we don't own a gun safe.  Or a gun.  I'm surprised they let us live here, honestly!

We had a record-setting rain event here on Monday - over 4 inches of rain fell.  My backyard was pretty flooded - this was mid-morning:
The water went to the fence line (and I'm sure into our neighbor's yard)

A few hours later:
 Our own private lake!

Our house was fine, as far as the water - it's elevated enough that we still had several feet to go before the water would even touch the foundation.  And we don't have a basement (not common to have them in Texas), so no worries there.  Once the rain stopped, and Jeff got our sump pump working, the yard drained pretty quickly.  I'm glad this doesn't happen too often, though...and I'm equally glad I didn't have to be out driving in that mess.

Brioche stitch - it looks like a rib stitch, only it is more defined.  It looks the same on both sides, too.

On the knitting front, I don't have much to show you.  I played around with knitting a cowl using a new-to-me stitch, and while I got the hang of the stitch, I didn't end up liking the cowl - it was going to be too bulky for me.  Since I was using one of my favorite yarns, Malabrigo Rasta, I didn't want to waste it on something that I wouldn't wear, so I ripped it out and rewound it for another project.  Oh well, it was fun to try, anyway!

Paco did the strangest thing the other day - he buried his food dish with his blanket.  He's never done this before, and I have no idea why he decided that the food needed to be hidden:
He ended up burying it, and then removing the blanket, three times over the course of the day.  Why?
Later on, he was OK with it being out in the open, although he's definitely on guard duty right here.  Weird.

Have a great weekend!

  1. I had the same clock thing happen to me yesterday. I got in the car to go home and as I was driving I glanced at the clock. Pretty near drove off the road because I thought I'd left work an hour early. HA!

Maybe when you weren't looking one of the cats was teasing Paco near his food?

    1. LOL on the thought/panic of leaving work early! Glad I wasn't the only one to have this clock thing happen.

The cats. Hmmm. They don't seem to bother his food, but maybe they DO when I'm not looking!

  2. Our backyard looks like that too if our snow melts too fast or we have a ton of rain - we call it Lake Velatini! Aw Paco is too funny!

  3. I had that same time thing getting into the Saturn last night. Hardly ever drive that car anymore and I forgot about changing the clock. Not to mention that it was also 10 minutes fast so I couldn't figure out what the heck time it was :D

That was a ton of rain. With no basement, what do you do for storage or laundry? LOL

    1. We have a laundry room! You come into it from the garage...which is where we store things (although we are currently parking both cars in it). There's also the attic. That's plenty of room to save crap, believe me! ;)

  4. You live in Texas and don't own a gun? Some may say that's un-patriotic....just kidding. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't have some flooding of our own over here. We have so much snow and the weather has been heating up like crazy!

  5. That flooding in the backyard is CRAZY!! Its good that you still had a couple of feet to go before it got in the house!!

The clock thing? That happened to me two days in a row in the studio! I don't know why I was so resistant to changing the studio clock.

I've seen some things with brioche stitch that were really pretty. I think they were knit with two yarns so somehow it made vertical stripes in the knitting?

And Paco. I'm hoping a doggy psychologist will read this post and give us a definitive answer to what was actually going on in his mind :)

    1. Too funny on your studio clock, although I still haven't changed the tiny clock on my bathroom counter, so I'm one to talk.

I've seen two-color brioche, and yes, it's a very distinct vertical stripe look. I mightcould make a hat...

Me, too, on the doggy psychologist!

  6. I love that they told you to store it in a gun safe. It is such a stereotypical Texas thing and yet amazing that it really happens. :) On the plus side, at least they're assuming your (nonexistant) guns are safely stored? Have a great weekend!

  8. Oh dear, the Paco shots/story struck my funnybone and I couldn't stop giggling. Maybe the giggles were partially stress relief after the comment about the gun safe. As for Paco, lolol. I haven't a clue.

  9. Weird dog but also makes me smile as always.

I always set the clocks that don't go automatic to the new time the night before but always forget my car.

You sure had a lot of rain last week.
