Friday Mishmash

First things first - the winner of the ION reflective iron-on transfer is:

KIM!!!

Congratulations!  Please send me an email (40somethingsjourney@gmail.com) with your mailing info so I can give it to my contact.  If I don't hear from you within a week, I'll have to choose another winner.

Thank you for all the sweet comments on my half marathon recap.  I don't want to brag, but I have the BEST readers.  Yes, I said it...and I meant it! :)

So, you might be wondering what one does in the days after running 13.1 miles - some people treat themselves to a massage, some treat themselves to a pedicure...but me?  I was the dope who scheduled my semi-annual trip to the dentist the day after the race, and my mammogram the day after that!  I don't know what I was thinking when I made those appointments, except perhaps I wanted to ensure that every part of my body had been tortured.

We had our end-of-season celebration dinner on Tuesday night - everyone who ran the race showed up wearing their finisher's shirt and medal.  We had a great group this year, which made my job as organizer a lot more pleasant.  I have one more job to do - submit an expense report to the main office - but I'm not even going to think about that until next week.  Then, I can just relax and run for fun!

Amy and I forgot to get a picture together at the finish line on Sunday, so we posed for one at the dinner:
I can't help but think of Buddy the Elf when I say, "Have you seen our medals?  They're GINORMOUS!!!"

Here's a cute video that someone made of our race - eagle eyes can find Amy and I doing our run/walk thing around the 1:07 mark. And you can see Pam (of Pam and Sadie fame) in her pink running tights at the 1:33 mark.

By the way, dogs weren't allowed to run this race, and this is the picture that Pam posted on Facebook that morning, complete with her caption:
What do you mean, "I can't run with you this time"?!? I've trained with you for this SINCE JUNE!

I mentioned in my race recap that I'd knitted a hat to wear after the race - mostly out of nervous energy, but also because we were out Saturday morning in the cold weather, and even though I was wearing a knitted hat (my Sarah Jessica Parker-inspired one, to be specific), my hair was blowing in my face and bugging me.  So I knitted up one of my favorite patterns - the Sugar Pine hat, with my favorite chunky yarn - Malabrigo Rasta - and I decided to put a ponytail hole in the hat.  Wonder of wonders, it worked!  I just estimated where I'd like the hole to be, bound off seven stitches, knit the round and then cast on seven stitches on the next round and boom - ponytail hat!
I like that the hole isn't very noticeable if I decide to wear it without a ponytail - I have a feeling this will be my go-to hat for winter!

Have a great weekend!

  1. Love the hat: how smart to make a hole in it for your ponytail! Most hats don't have that; I see new business here!

Loved the video: I spotted you and Amy and Pam and ahhhhhhhhh poor Sadie. Dogs aren't allowed here in races either but we do have running events especially for runners with dogs. I looked into that when I first got Bella but she's not interested in running.

So what are your next running plans?

    1. Yeah, that ponytail hole makes a lot of sense - I was surprised to not see more hats like that around!

Glad you liked the video and saw us - and now you've seen my town, too! :)

  3. Awww Sadie is too cute in that photo.

I can't believe sheer nervous energy produced that hat. You need to set up an Etsy shop, for real.

    1. I know, Sadie slays me!

I have a feeling that were I to set up an Etsy shop, I'd feel pressured to knit, which would take the fun out of it. Plus, when people can buy a handknit-looking hat at Target for $10-$15, they would balk at what I'd have to charge to cover the cost of yarn (I paid over that for the yarn I used in that hat - granted, I didn't use all of it, but I can't get another hat out of it, either), plus my time. So, that's why I just knit for fun. :)

    2. Totally understand not wanting to be pressured but runners will pay for things they want and like. Just sayin!

  4. I agree with Amy--that is a great picture of both of you. Surprisingly flattering race shirts. Did you plan ahead to wear the same shirt under the race shirt? That's not part of the race shirt, is it?

I think Sadie is just pretending to be sorry she can't run. She's all "just keep the hangdog look until she gets out the door. Then the bed is ALL MINE."

Yes, you are a little crazy for planning those appointments like that. On the other hand, everything is all done, and now its funtime!

And the hat!! So impressed with you for knitting that, and figuring out how to do the ponytail hole. And then for being brave and trying it. It is the perfect winter hat!

    1. The long-sleeved shirts under the finisher's shirts came with our race packet - they're pretty nice, too! It was very cold for that dinner, hence the layering.

LOL - you pegged Sadie...you know she burrowed back under the covers as soon as Pam left!

  5. Poor Sadie! She looks so sad.

That is a huge crowd for the race. It's amazing the kind of energy that brings, isn't it?

  6. I could pick you your blonde pony tail anywhere Shelley! Love it - and yes, those medals are GINORMOUS!

I love the hat with the whole in the back - so clever!

  7. Okay Shelley, your next gig can be specifically to organize a marathon/half marathon for dogs and owners. In honor of Sadie! And I think... I WON, I WON, I WON. I'll email you and see if I'm the right Kim.

  8. Hi, Thanks for visiting our blog and entering the Altra Shoe giveaway. I was first introduced to hats with the ponytail hole in them when I saw them at Target and thought they were SO clever! I love that you knitted one yourself. I tried knitting a few times but only ended up with pot holders, haha! I will be following your blog!

  9. I LOVE the hat! Gorg yarn & clever designer. Does your Ma knit as well?

Wow, those appts, you are taking really good care of Shelley. :)

    Happy weekend.
