Friday Mishmash

I get an email notification every time a comment appears on my blog...even when I'm the one doing the commenting (like when I respond to your comments).  It never fails, and I mean NEVER - I'll be commenting away, and see that my inbox tab is showing I've received a new email, and sure enough, I click over to see who sent me something only to see that it was created by my comment.  First I feel disappointment, and then, shame...fool me once, shame on you - fool me a couple hundred times, shame on me!

Does anyone else think that Pinterest has ruined itself by changing up what you see on your main page?  Used to be, I'd see what I and my friends had pinned.  Now, Pinterest is showing me things that strangers who have similar boards as mine have pinned.  I like seeing what my friends have pinned; I don't like wading through all kinds of random things - seriously Pinterest, just because I have a party board doesn't mean I want to see party ideas all the time...when I need them, I'll go looking.  Sheesh!

I've learned something new, thanks to several readers who commented on the black crew socks from Wednesday's post...apparently this is a popular trend with teenagers at the moment.  Also?  I'm officially old not cool out of touch with kids these days.  And yes, I WILL shake my head along with my cane at this trend.

We have the worst luck with refrigerators.  I know some people who buy one and never have to buy another.  We are now on our THIRD one in this house...and we've only lived here for 13 years, so yes, that is pretty ridiculous.  The small fridge that we bought after our LG fridge went out yet again while we were on vacation?  It died on Tuesday.  You know, I remember thinking that the Greek yogurt I had for breakfast wasn't super cold, but it wasn't until a few hours later when I opened the freezer to take out a turkey burger patty to defrost and discovered that it was already defrosted - yep.  That would explain the yogurt.  And honestly, I can handle a lot of situations pretty calmly, but having a fridge go out for the umpteenth time?  Let's just say there wasn't calmness for a short while, and poor Paco didn't know what to do!
::dramatic reenactment:: I get bery nerbous when you get upset, mom.

I talked to Jeff (he was out of town) and while I was ready to call a repairman, he reminded me that we never liked that small fridge - any time we did a decent grocery shop we couldn't fit the food in it, and forget big food occasions like Thanksgiving...plus he said that we wouldn't replace it unless our hand was forced (see our new bathroom for another example...it turned out great, but we never would have done such a nice upgrade just because).  So, our hand was forced.  My dad helped me out with checking what Consumer Reports recommended, I went to Home Depot, Sears and Lowes, quizzed the patient salespeople, and in 24 hours, this was in my kitchen:
Eagle eyes should spot Paco in this shot...
Interior - ahhh.  Love all the space, plus the LED lights make it really bright!  So...do you think I need to go grocery shopping?

Knitting continues to be fun - Amy, Stephanie and I met up on Sunday for a little knitting gab session at Blue Baker.  Amy is knitting a sock (she's REALLY taken to knitting!) and we encouraged her to try it on to see how much farther she had to go...let's just say that shenanigans ensued.  Hey, the more fun we make it look, the more people will want to take up knitting, right?
Open-toed socks...think it will catch on?

My fried chicken mitten did not turn out the way I wanted - partially my fault, as I didn't have the right sized needles, and because I'm a tight knitter, I figured it would be OK to go up a size.  Nope - they were really loose.  Which I could have lived with, but the thumb wasn't working for me - I picked up the stitches and knit it, tinked back, knit again, and finally gave up.  Here's the sad state of that mitten, before I unraveled the yarn:
Blergh...

I made a mate to another mitten, using the original pattern:
Henry looks like he's screaming in HORROR at the scary mitten!

Still not 100% on board that this pattern is THE ONE for me, so my search continues.

Here's a sweater update:

I know, it doesn't look all that different from the last time I posted a picture.  It's getting there...

Tomorrow is our running club's benchmark run - the longest run before we start to taper for our big race.  The marathon group will be doing 21 miles while the half group does 12.  I'm planning on doing 9 miles; this is going to be fun!  Have a great weekend!

  1. I thought it was me who had the settings wrong on Pinterest. I don't use it very much anymore and the fact that I didn't see what my friends had pinned didn't keep me hanging around for long on the website either last time I visited.

Our freezer died a couple of weeks ago and I still haven't bought a new one. This is something I don't like doing. I don't like to shop around for a freezer. But I am going to buy one next weekend because I miss it.

You know what: there was a knitting session hosted by a fashion store in my town in a bar last night! I thought of you when I saw it on FB. They were knitting scarfs. And I thought that if you would have lived here, we could have gone together :)

Have fun at the run tomorrow.

    1. I'm doing the same thing as you on Pinterest - click on, see a bunch of weird random things, click off.

I have to admit, shopping for appliances is not super fun, but I know you'll appreciate your new freezer when you buy it.

That knitting session sounds so fun! We totally would have been there!!!

  2. We got a new fridge last month, because ours died too. It is the same as your new one and we love it! It's weird to have the freezer on the bottom, haha.
    Have a great 9 tomorrow!

  4. Pinterest has become stupid. I have been asking everyone I know who is complaining about this to complain to THEM. They could easily make that feature optional for those who would like to keep it.

Love your new fridge and I bet you'll appreciate it even more with the approaching holidays which means the return of your hungry kids!

You go girl with your 9 miles. Makes me feel like a slug that I'll only do 5 or 6.

    1. Good idea - I complained to them just now.

...and I feel like a slug only doing 9 when most of my group is doing 12 - perspective, it's wild!

    1. The fridge is a Samsung; it had a good rating from Consumer Reports. There were a couple of models (4-door vs 3-door) that are special right now (through Thanksgiving, I believe) at both Lowe's and Home Depot.

  6. Oh my! I have a definite case of fridge envy! LOL at Paco getting nervous when you are upset. That never happens at my house...

  7. I love your new fridge! You know, you might want to actually check the outlet that the fridge is plugged into. Could be a problem with that which is frying your appliances.

  8. I love everything about this :-) Your use of your pets is so cute! I still love Pinterest. When randoms show up I just go and unfollow them. It seems to have worked because I rarely get them in my regular "feed" now. My latest Pinterest find is "arm knitting". Check it out, there are some great YouTube videos showing you how. I have bought the wool and I'm going to attempt it this weekend! I will need a block of time where no one will be bothering me because I will literally be unavailable (kind of like when you paint your nails!). I check in on your blog all the time but I rarely comment because I'm usually on my phone or iPad and they don't seem to accept comments.

  9. Funny thing about the open toe socks. On Dragon's Den (like Shark Tank but in Canada), a young girl came on and was trying to get money for her toeless socks. Long story short, I can't remember if she got money from the Dragon's but her company has been taking off with these socks! Who knew!

P.S. Don't worry, I have been confused by Pinterest for a while now.

  10. I'm currently suffering from fridge envy. Have fun on your run!

  11. I gave up on pinterest a long time ago.
Our fridge is giving out and I cringe at the thought of having to buy a new one. It is our second in 23 years, so not too bad. We are still on our first clothes dryer that is over 23 years old :).
    Have a great run!

  12. I couldn't agree more about the Pinterest thing. Why ruin a good thing....I don't wanna see who might be looking at something I might be interested in. Big Brother doing it again. ;)

  13. OMG Shelley, LOL at the Paco (both forward facing and in shadow) and Henry pics. They're wonderful! As is your new fridge. And I too have fridge envy! Have a wonderful week!
