Wednesday Workout Update

It's funny that I feel a little guilty about my workouts for last week, because all I did was run.  Yes, I ran four times, but I didn't do anything extra, and I also had two days where I didn't wake up to an early alarm, which was pretty nice, I have to admit.  I took advantage of my land workout partner, Julia, being on vacation, and had a little break as well.  Anyway, I think it's hilarious that I am at the point where only running four times in one week has me feeling guilty...it's incredible how much I've changed my mindset about exercise in the past five years!

All of my runs have been good.  I attribute that to stronger legs from my land workouts (lunges, squats, core work, walking for miles), and doing 2:1 intervals (run for 2 minutes, walk for 1 minute) for everything except the hill repeat workout.  I'm approaching training this season with a different attitude - I just want to feel good while I'm running.  And doing intervals does that for me...no matter how hot, humid or hard the run is, the intervals give me a nice little break and I am managing to get through my runs feeling happy and strong, so I'm going to continue with them...going with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" thing.

That said, I only have a few weeks remaining with Julia as my land workout partner; school starts toward the end of August, and she'll be back to teaching.  Then my real challenge will begin - doing it on my own.  Anyone who's ever done a long walk knows that it goes by a lot quicker when you have someone to talk with, plus we've been good at pushing...er, motivating each other to do the other exercises.  Also, you look less silly whimpering over lunges when there's another person whimpering alongside you.  I can't be the only one who prefers exercising with a friend versus going solo, right?

The only other thing that might put a kink in my workout plans is the bathroom redo - it's looking like it will begin this week, and I'm not sure how early the crews are going to be here, and obviously I can't leave my house when they're here, so I may have to adjust.  Ack!  Not a huge deal, but the vampire runner in me much prefers getting out while it's still dark.  I wonder what it's like to live in a part of the country where the weather is mild enough that you can actually run in the daylight?  Hmmm, something to ponder...

  2. I prefer running early in the morning too but right now it's still light when I go out. When my vacation is over at the end of this month and I have to back to work I'm afraid it will be different.

I prefer working out on my own unless you would be here to be my partner.

Is it an option to do the walking with Paco? I found out that I don't mind walking 10K at all but Bella has to come too. I don't do it on my own, there's no fun in that. I don't even use music on my walks with Bella.

    1. You know, it's funny but I don't even consider going on a walk with Paco, because he's such a jackass toward other dogs. Yes, I said it...my dog is not friendly to his own kind. /embarrassed.

It would be too fun if we could workout together!

    2. Bella isn't always the nicest dog to other dogs either on the street which is weird because at doggy day care there's no problem. But on the street she can be a real doggy bitch.

I do have the solution for you I think :) Bring your camera, as soon as Paco starts bitching around, pretend you'll make a picture and I bet he only will have eyes for you LOL

  3. LOL. Love Fran's solution to Paco's problem.

The only time I ever exercised with someone else was about 25 years ago, when I lived in Texas. I had a friend that took long walks with me. You're right. It is more enjoyable. I have friends now (LOL, had to think about that) but none of them are into exercising, and also, just because that's the way it is in a rural area, we all live pretty far from each other.

Any of the newbies in the club look like possible exercise mates?

  4. It was a glorious 64 degrees this morning - if I could just write my blog at night, I'd have time to walk before work!

I envy that you can workout out with other people - the people pleaser in me would try to do too much and overdo it!

Cannot believe tomorrow is August 1 already!

  5. Meko is a jerk to other dogs on walks too, but she usually gets pretty focused when we take her for a run! Does Paco run? I tend to not pay attention to anything other than the dogs if I take either with me, so it's a nice distraction.

I like to run with a friend at least once a week, because it does make the run go by pretty quickly, but I don't mind doing it by myself sometimes too. I met a lot of local running buddies through running blogs, so maybe there's some in your area? Or is there someplace where lots of people run that you could check out? We have the trail along Lake Michigan, and I know a blogger who has made a few running buddies just from seeing the same people out each morning.

    1. Good ideas - I'll have to be more open to looking for people who are doing similar workouts and maybe get the nerve to talk to them. :)

So we all have jerk dogs? Bella, Paco and Meko? LOL!

  6. I agree, running with a buddy is the best. Oh, and in the daylight, when you can see all the lumps and bumps in the sidewalk an you don't have to wear a headlamp. That's how we do it at 5am here in Oregon in the summer, in the usually mild weather, haha.

  7. Only 4 runs! I think you are a running maverick Shelley. Yay you. A workout buddy absolutely helps, hope you find a new running partner soon! LOVE Fran's suggestion about taking a picture of Paco to have him look at you and not other dogs. And also LOL that you both used the words jackass and bitch to describe two of my favorite blog dogs!!! AWWW. Have a great Wednesday!

  8. Yeah, I can't take Pixie out for walks either. We just stand around. Not a lot of calories burned.

If the foreman(woman??) is around when the work crew is there, you can certainly do some short jogs around the neighborhood. Plus, being there for the reno is not fun. You can't get anything else done with all the noise and lack of privacy.

  9. Since everyone is talking about pets, here it is- i used to walk with Hulo. The problem-he was my obese cat. No wonder none of us lost any weight.
